If the technology was advanced enough, would you upload your brain into a computer? If it would destroy your brain in the process so that only the digital copy of you remained? What about if it were a true copy that didn't harm you, giving you a digital clone?

What if this were a way for people to cheat death, but it was only available to the very, very rich?

Would you want to continue interacting with the real world even as a digital being, or would you want to have an avatar body and live in the virtual world of your choice with other disembodied people?

Would a digitized copy of your mind that felt it was still alive actually be alive? Would you still be a person? Would you still have rights?

If technology gets to the point that it can mimic or create consciousness, what's to stop people from creating all sorts of virtual minds, based on real minds, only tweaked, with their own set of (false) memories, dreams, and ambitions? Are those people, then? Is being natural a prerequisite for being "alive"?

If you were having your mind digitized, would you keep all your bad memories, or would you have them selectively erased? (I have to wonder if that's even possible, since everything seems connected to everything else, at least in the aftermath-- if you have a paralyzing fear of dogs because you were once bitten by one, would excising that memory also erase the fear, or just leave you with a fear that you can't explain?

Meh, for all I know the entire universe popped into existence 5 minutes ago, complete with a population full of memories that never happened. pirate

To answer my own questions, I don't trust technology enough to *die* in the process of uploading my brain, unless I was already terminally ill. If I could just make copies of my mind, I'd do that, though. And then I'd hold a convention of me, myself, and I... and all our other clones... I don't know if all of me would show up, though. I am notoriously bad when it comes to blowing things off. But it would be interesting to see how our experiences diverged over time.

More later.
