Tanabata (tanabata, meaning "Evening of the seventh") is a Japanese star festival, derived from the Chinese star festival, Qi Xi ("The Night of Sevens")
It celebrates the meeting of Orihime (Vega) and Hikoboshi (Altair). The Milky Way, a river made from stars that crosses the sky, separates these lovers, and they are allowed to meet only once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the lunisolar calendar. The celebration is held at night, once the stars come out.
"Leave it to Gambino to make a week-long shindig out of a special day," Alex murmured in dry amusement, sticking the pamphlet of the story into the back of her jean pocket. She didn't really have room to complain, since it allowed her some time with Zul, which was the point of their venture. Between work and being high as a kite from her date (STILL), they'd been doing their own thing and that wasn't good enough for the Italian woman. She brought home a book of events one day after work and asked Zul to pick something out for them to go do together - the demon had picked the festival with a wry smile, and thus they found themselves in the middle of the grandoise city amongst tourists and ladies dressed in yukata, booths as far as the eye could see and decorations to take one's breath away.
Too bad Natsuki was working, she thought to herself quietly, wishing her friend were here to enjoy the festival with them. Sure, it was meant for her and Zul, but a little understanding of what they were looking at without relying on Engrish translations would have been nice. And maybe more authentic, somehow. Adjusting her thin black hoodie - hood down along with her hair for a change - she slipped her hands into the small pockets and gave her charge a wide smile. "So, whatcha think?"
Zul was fairly overwhelmed, to be perfectly honest. He'd never seen so much bamboo, not even on the television, the fluttering papers of people's wishes creating a foreign but lovely song that had the demon's head perked and listening. He saw the games and while he was interested in looking them over, they weren't the main attraction - the place was like the carnival that he'd seen with Domevlo, but this seemed different. More real and less dingy and gaudy. All the decorations were so painstakingly perfect and aesthetically pleasing that he was having a hard time getting his bearings. He, too, wished someone else was there to share the moment with.
"I don't know," he admitted at length, floating only a little ways in front of his Guardian as though afraid he might get lost in the feel of the place. The tourists and curious glances did little to steal his wonder, truly a childish and open-hearted thing that left his smile boyish and eyes vibrant with wonder. "There's so much! Will you let me try some food?" he inquired as someone passed them with three, sweet-smelling balls speared on a stick, piquing his interest.
"Maybe," Alex laughed, gently nudging him with her shoulder. "C'mon, let's see what there is to see before we worry about food. I want to take home a souvenir or two!"
"Me too! Can I get one for Rivener?"
"If we find something you think Rivener would like, yeah. We can do that."
That was all the Frei needed to grasp his woman's elbow and drag her into the flow of people, as bright eyed and bushy-tailed as a floating torso could be.

“You alright, Xiu?” Hazeline asked as she walked beside the floating raevan. Xiu had been rather quiet ever since they had arrived and this worried the young woman a little. “A penny for your thoughts, Xiu,”
“I am just…awestruck, that is all Hazeline,” replied Xiu with a soft laugh at his guardian’s concern. “I’ve never seen such decorations as these. Then again…,” said Xiu as he mused over his words. “I have not seen all that many celebrations and festivals to begin with…,”
“You are less than a year old, Xiu. Once you have been around a couple of years, You’d find all of these events sort of commonplace after a while,” said Hazeline with a smile.
“So that means Hazeline has been to many celebrations?” asked Xiu curiously.
“No, not at all I’m afraid,” replied Hazeline with a shrug. “I not really the kind that would go out of my just to celebrate every event hosted. I am… more of the stay at home type actually,”
“I see… well, everyone’s different I guess,” said Xiu quietly before turning his attention to some of the stalls on display.
Hazeline smiled and followed her raevan at a leisurely pace as Xiu floated from stall to stall examining their wares, occasionally asking the surprised storeowner a couple of questions regarding the nature of his wares. All in all, the white frei seemed to be enjoying himself. That was good wasn’t it? Hazeline had been feeling a little guilty for neglecting Xiu lately and was glad that a friend had mentioned this event to her. It gave the guardian some much needed alone time with her charge. True, Xiu was not complaining about staying at home but at the mention of going to the Tanabata festival, the frei’s eyes had lit up with excitement. It was clear that the frei was more than eager to have some change in his daily routine. Perhaps it was time to end that ‘stay at home’ lifestyle of hers...

"You caught one!" Zul exclaimed, flabberghasted.
Alex held up the bagged goldfish triumphantly, all but posing next to the modest inflated pool beneath a sign that read 'Kingyo Sukui.' She held out her prize to the Raevan, slightly amused that her charge had so much interest in the fish when he was garnering just as much interest by his mere presence. "We'll give him a nice bowl when we get home and you can name him," she laughed.
The demon's bright blue eyes watched the fish circle a few times before righting himself with a brilliant smile. "Deal," he agreed affably, letting his woman hold onto the bag for the time being. He didn't want to forget it in his excitement or pop the bag, given the heated natured of his hands when he was over-eager. Zul gave the fish a little wave before dragging Alex out again, looking around eagerly for another game to play, or a souvenir booth for--
Righting himself to his full height, Zul's wide eyes picked out something very white and very familiar in a nearby stall. With an excited tug on Alex's shirt, the Frei zipped through the crowd effortlessly and slid in place next to Xiu, his grin wide in triumph. "Xiu! How are you? It's been so long!" he greeted his wintery-friend with a good-natured pat on his shoulder. "Having fun?" The demon felt a trickle of pride as his greeting, which was a lot less halting and much more verbose than his first meeting with the white Frei.
She wasn't as fast or able to move as quickly as him, but it was impossible to lose a floating body of Zul's appearance within the crowd. Really, all Alex had to do was follow the wide-eyed stares and she knew she'd find him. As she broke through the majority of the people at the booth, her green eyes also picked up a familiar sight. Alex grinned, not quite as widely as Zul but with a great deal of warmth, lifting her hand to wave to Xiu. What a pleasant surprise! She gave a quick glance around for Hazeline - although she didn't know who she was looking for, since she hadn't met her that day in the mall.

“So…if I can get this ball into the cup or onto that pointy bit three times in a row without dropping them, I’ll win a prize?” enquired Xiu as he studied the simple looking toy before him. “Interesting. What is it called?” “It a kendama,” replied the booth keeper; amused that something so bizarre was taking an interest in the game. “Want a demonstration,” “Yes, please,” said Xiu nodding. After all, it would not hurt to see how it’s properly done. Just then, there was a friendly pat on his shoulder and Xiu turned around with surprise. “Zul?” exclaimed the white frei in astonishment before a delighted smile appeared. “I had not expected to see you here! But I’m glad all the same!” said Xiu unable to hide his excitement at seeing another raevan; and one that he’d recognized too! “Yes, it’s certainly been a while hasn’t it?” said Xiu with a nod of agreement. “I’ve been fine. How about you, Zul? How’s life?” asked the white frei with a chuckle before noticing Zul’s guardian approaching. Returning the wave, Xiu smiled at Alex. It had been a long time since he had seen the both of them. Back then, everything seemed…so new. Folding his wings neatly behind him, Xiu tried to locate his own guardian Hazeline. Her previous meeting with Zul and his guardian was minimal and Xiu doubted that they’d remember each other. Spotting her standing a little way off and watching the interaction with some amusement, Xiu indicated in her direction. “That’s my guardian Hazeline. Hazeline, this is Zul, the one that found me in the shopping complex and that is Alex, Zul’s guardian,” said Xiu nodding in Alex’s direction “They were the ones I’ve told you about.” Having been introduced, Hazeline smiled and inclined her head slightly. “Pleased to meet you. So you were the ones that rescued Xiu sometime back. He’s mentioned you a couple of times and I am glad that I am finally able to meet you in person or…raevan,”
