Also, had the Intel Core 2 Duo in this system OC'd for a long time, 15% OC. Currently Stock clocks and underclocked RAM.
Using the proprietary drivers for the 3850, and fairly often the screen will break up into a black bit on top and bottom, with large color chunks in the center, before ending the signal to the monitor. ctrl+alt+f1-f6 doesn't bring it to a virtual terminal, and it doesn't reboot. I have to hold the power button down. It mostly happens with video related tasks, such as when I'm using VLC player. 3D games don't seem to crash it, though.
I doesn't always happen when VLC or Movie Player is up though, sometimes it just crashes.
Disabling all the enhancements, the 1 videocard related thing, and all CPU extensions in VLC seemed to result in it not crashing while using it.
AKA: I have no idea if it's the videocard, CPU, or RAM right now.

Ubuntu, by default, applies a bit of Compiz desktop effects.. not much of them.. but a little
So I disabled them. System hasn't crashed since I disabled it(crashed when I disabled it, though)
