I have heard a wonderful story about this "green fairy", but I am unfortunate to only hear it in my ears rather than feeling the magical joy it can bring.

Anyways, do you guys know about absynthe?

I know that it is illegal in its traditional form, and I think it is still illegal in the US, though I am probably wrong.

Actually, I think you're right. I believe it is illegal within the US

A-B-S-I-N-T-H-E.

Absinthe is an anisette. I drink based upon aniseed, liquorice and other herbs in lesser quantities. A drink designed to be taken when diluted with a quantity of water and generally of a refreshing quality. (As opposed to burning like spirits or softening like ales.) When water is added, an anisette will often 'louche'. This is to say that it mixes with the water and reacts to give a translucent or an opaque appearance. They are between 45% and 65% ABV.

Absinthe is to my mind the top corner of the anisette triangle. The bottom corners are Pernod (an aniseed flavoured spirit which is vivid yellow and louches to an opalescent green) and Ricard (a liquorice flavoured spirit which is transparent and louches to a faint cloudiness). Ouzo falls in the middle of the triangle, being [usually] more complex in flavouring than Pernod and Ricard but without the prestige, variety or art of Absinthe.

Absinthe is legal in most countries, albeit often only comparatively recently legalised. It is usually a dark cloudy green in colour which louches into a paler and brighter green. Almost appearing to emit its own light on occasion.

Absinthe need not be greed however. Fougerolles do a Verte de Fougerolles and a Blanche de Fougeroles, the latter being white. There is also a pointlessly red Serpis absinthe. Black absinthe though is a new creation which serves only really to supply poser-goths who don't care a damn about whethey they are drinking a genuine spirit.

The best Absinthes are often French, Czech being often like windowcleaner and English being not worthy of the name Absinthe.

Thus ends my staccato lesson.

Oh, and whetever you do.

Don't set fire to it, it adds nothing and is simply destructive.

By the way, why do people light drinks on fire? What is the point or purpose of it?

For the love of God, stay the ******** away from the Green Fairy! Been there, done that, the hangover I ended up with was the absolute worst. Tastes like licorice (I hate licorice) and it was one ******** drunk, but the hangover makes it not worth it.

> Bravado. "Ug, cave-man like fire!"

> Adherence to a mythical image of decadence. "I say, aren't we all terribly cultural and edgy.."

> Misinformation. "Yeah, of course this is how it should be drunk. / It tastes better this way."

Some probably do so in order to subversively remove the alcohol too, that way they don't take in so much alcohol as people drinking properly.

I thought in some cases it helps the improve the flavour, however I'm sure this comment shall be disproved hereafter.

Hm, with which drink?

With Absinthe it will only work if you take destroying the complexity of the flavour and replacing it simply with the taste of burnt sugar as an improvement.

I didn't mean absinthe in particular, however I don't really know anyway. What would be the point of doing it otherwise? Apart from your points there, that is. sweatdrop

Not worth the bother, the flames are very unlikey to spread onto an actual chav.
