History
Four years ago, Johnny Gambino held a huge Halloween party in his mansion on Gambino Isle. When the zombie outbreak began, shotguns were given out to the guests to defend themselves with, and to contain the outbreak. When this failed, the labtechs did the only thing they could, and triggered the failsafe, to destroy the mansion, and the zombies within.
However, it never worked, and by morning the zombies had spread across the island, turning the resort into a deathtrap.
For a full three weeks, the zombies were contained on the island, and life on the mainland continued as normally as could be expected.
The first zombies appeared around Aekea, and spread quickly. Just as Gambino had fallen, so did Aekea, within the short span of a week. And so too, did Barton.
Forewarned by the other town's failures, the citizens of Durem rallied together, and with their ranks augmented by the refugees from other towns, managed to repel the undead masses. Within two weeks, a perimeter was established, and a wall built around, further ensuring the continued safety of the town.
The gaians weren't satisfied with merely repelling the zombies, and so, plans were laid for taking Barton back from the zombies. It took many months of preparation, and finally by the spring of 2005, half a year after the zombies appeared, Duremites and Bartonites set out to free the smaller town.
Though the gaians were successful in the end, retaking Barton came with a high price, as many fighters were lost in the battle. Those remaining set about fortifying Barton in the same way Durem had been, and by that fall, a full year after the town had fallen, Barton was back on its feet, if not totally recovered from the zombie's onslaught.
Aekea remained a heavily infested area, as the gaians took time to train new fighters and lay plans for the reclaiming of the fallen town.
Any plans laid for that battle came to a halt in the fall of '06. Lights were spotted in the night sky, lights that no one had ever seen before, and many a gaian became deeply involved in trying to discover what the phenomenon was. Later, many claimed to have seen flying craft, though few cared to back up such stories.
It was much later, when the lights disappeared a mere few months after appearing, when a change was noticed in the zombies. And perhaps...those bizarre lights would have been forgotten entirely if not for how they had appeared just before this change.
Before, the zombies had roamed in groups and alone, attacking any gaian they came across, regardless of how many companions that gaian had with them.
Now, lone zombies were a rare sight. They roamed in groups, and most bizarrely, refused to attack gaians unless they outnumbered them.
Even worse, they'd begun to congregate in areas outside the towns, areas where gaians were sure to come, and lie in wait to ambush them. The attacks against the fortified towns like Durem and Barton suddenly all but ceased, and even the smaller, newer towns were left relatively in peace.
It was as if the zombies had suddenly begun to learn...
Now, nearly two years after this, gaians have learned to adapt to the new behavior of their constant enemies. Protectors, a group dedicated to the defense of the towns, have branches in most of the larger towns, and patrol the borders, keeping the towns safe. In most, but not all, of the towns, the Protectors also patrol the roads connecting the towns, but some of the smaller towns simply don't have the manpower to protect their roads as well as their homes. And some simply choose not to, preferring to keep to themselves.
Hunters brave the wilds, roaming where ever they please as they track down zombies. Some wish to cleanse the entire world of the undead plague, others simply work to earn the gold they need, and not all Hunters are entirely trustworthy.
Although each town governs itself, the leaders exchange ideas and work together, though meeting in person isn't always possible. The Durem leaders seem to have a slight influence over the others, owing to their leadership during the Fall. And indeed, owing to the fact that it was they who lead the others during the Change, there are quite a few who covet the power of the Durem leaders.
It's not just the Durem leadership that has to watch its back, there are power-hungry organizations in nearly every town.
Life within the towns can be just as dangerous as life outside.
