Warrick wouldn't say he was hiding. After all, what did he have to hide from? ... Aside from everything? From Ace, and Fiona, and Adam, and everyone around. From the world and it's happenings. And most importantly from himself. Alright, so he was hiding. He had shut himself up in his office and he hardly left lately. When he did he went straight home to be alone. And then it was back to the office again. He took few visitors.

But it had been days now. In fact it must have been a week! He supposed there was no use hiding anymore. He had no more paperwork to do and being at home felt lazy and strangely lonely, despite the fact that he was doing his best to avoid all people. So he exited his office. He was in full uniform, of course, but he had taken to wearing the same mask he had when he had spoken at the commencement more lately. It felt more secure, it wasn't going to fall off his face if he wasn't careful. And when looking down and doing a lot of paperwork it was helpful. Even if there was no one to see if his face did end up being revealed.

He wandered all the way out of the building and across the grounds toward the park. It was around eleven-thirty at night so he was fairly certain no one else would be there anyway. When he reached his destination he sat down on a bench under a large tree and let his eyes stare the the row of military buildings in the darkened not so far distance. He didn't really want to be thinking about anything. He just wanted to sit in the dark and not think about... Well, anything.

Unfortunately for Warrick he found that if he did not keep himself occupied he thought about exactly what he shouldn't. He was pretty sure in a moral way for more than one reason he shouldn't be thinking about Ace. He shouldn't be wondering where he was, or what he was doing, or remembering the feeling of their lips pressed together and being able to have an arm around him. He felt a bit sick in a way suddenly and his brow furrowed while he quietly sighed and closed his eyes in an attempt to fight the thoughts and feelings away. He unbuttoned his uniform coat a little and the top button of the shirt underneath it so he could breathe more easily.

If Warrick had been hiding, Ace didn't go looking for him. Somehow he felt like he had made a huge mistake. Over the past week, he found himself wondering if he would even see the lt. colonel again. The thought that he might not made Ace feel more sad than he had felt in a very long time. And of course, there was the fear that if he DID see Warrick again that things would not be the same. Could they go back to the way that they were? Could they even be friends when something so confusing had happened between them the way that it had?

Maybe Ace had been right for not becoming close to people. Things got complicated and then someone would end up getting hurt in the end. He had messed this up pretty good. Even if they did become friends again, how could Warrick feel comfortable around him again? How could he even trust him again the way that he had before? He felt as if he had ruined that special connection that the two of them had.

However, it wasn't Ace who spotted Warrick in the park. Irene saw him from a ways away at first. She didn't approach him right away. She just watched him from a distance as he sat on the bench beneath the tree. Eventually, however, she finally decided join the lt. colonel. Crossing the park, she soon came to stand in front of him. She wasn't in uniform currently. She had on a comfortable looking green colored dress that came down to her knees. Over this she wore a cream colored cardigan and some matching tall socks. Her shoes didn't exactly match her pretty outfit. A pair of black combat boots adorned her feet.

In the young woman's hands was a jar with a couple mysteriously floating lights in it. She smiled warmly at Warrick. "Good evening, lieutenant colonel." She greeted him, shifting the jar so that she was cradling it with one arm so that she could salute with the other one. "You look troubled, sir. If you don't mind me saying so."

He couldn't get him out of his head. It was like Ace had left a part of himself there; as if some sort of venom had seeped from his lips onto Warricks and into his mouth. Ace was a poison working itself through his bloodstream and ending at the brain. The the poison rested and pulsed and puddled. It infected him and he could think of nothing else. He feared he would soon become blind to everything to the memory of the young man's face. And it was already fading like he never thought it would be able to.

This notion caused a sudden sense of dread to fill the man. How could he already be forgetting his face? His dread turned to panic and he looked up and tried to force himself to see anything else. But he didn't really want to see anything else anyway. The poison was telling him that all he wanted to see was Ace, and he knew it was true. He needed to see him again so he could map out every tiny bit of his face and keep it safe in his mind. And then he would be able to see him whenever he wanted to... Until the image began to fade again.

This strange thought process was interrupted by the voice of Irene. Warrick didn't exactly recognize it at first, and it took a moment for him to realize who she was. After all, she was out of uniform and his vision was clouded by his affliction. And when he did recognize her he then recognized the words she was speaking. He seemed troubled? Well, he was. Maybe this was why he had hidden himself. People were always staring anyway and he hadn't wanted to talk about it. Because Warrick couldn't lie. He still couldn't lie like a normal person.

"I... Hello," he said awkwardly to Ace's pretty friend. For a brief moment he wondered if Ace was with her. His eyes shifted around in a momentarily frantic movement in the dark. But soon they returned to her, then to her glowing jar, then back to her face again. "I don't mind you saying it. The truth is that I'm afraid I'm fairly certain I've never been more troubled in my life," he said honestly. This was not the sort of troubled he had been when he had had his mouth shut. This, he feared, had the potential to hurt much worse and leave a far greater scar.

Irene couldn't help but to frown a little bit in response to the man's answer. "It's a shame to hear that." She said. For a short while she stood where she was, just looking at Warrick, her expression a mildly concerned one. But eventually she moved again so that she could come closer. The young woman took a seat on the bench beside him, setting the strangely glowing jar on her knees.

"It's rare to find fireflies in the city." She commented, holding the jar up a little bit so that Warrick could see that the little glowing lights were actually insects. "They only come around at certain times of the year. My parents used to take me out to collect them when I was young. And even though I am grown now, I still collect them whenever it's the right time." She looked down at the jar and smiled in a fond manner as if she were remembering a time in her life that made her happy. Irene had a sweet look about her. There was something so pure and innocent and just... good about the young woman. She was probably very likable.

Irene placed one of her dainty hands upon the lid of the jar, gently unscrewing it. "Of course, we always let them go in the end." She pulled the top off of the jar and the little glowing insects made their escape, fluttering out of their glass cage. The young woman watched them climb higher in the air until they zoomed off into the night. She returned her eyes to Warrick. She looked very content. "Everyone seems to be down these days." She added.

Warrick's eyes were drawn to the tiny dancing lights confined to their glass encasement. They were very beautiful, he had to admire them. It was amazing how something that was alive could shine so brightly and in such a very literal sort of way. For a few moments they took his mind off of what it had been stuck on for a week straight, maybe more than that, even. He really couldn't say, and he wasn't sure he wanted to know, anyway.

"I don't know that I fit in with the definition of everyone," he responded, his eyes watching the fireflies as they danced away now, out of the jar and into the night sky. It was so dark, they stood out brilliantly. Yes, it was dark. He shifted his eyes to Irene again, wondering what she was doing out so late. She could have caught fireflies earlier in the evening if she had wanted to. He felt like asking would be somehow intrusive or condescending.

His mind began to wander again, causing his stomach to tighten at the panicked thought of getting back to what he had worn himself out thinking about all of this time. He began to ponder instead the definition of 'everyone'. He figured it meant part of the 'whole'. He wasn't sure that he was part of the 'whole'. He just didn't think he would ever fit. It was more than the scars. He thought there must be something wrong with him. Something much more than skin deep.

"I'm afraid... I'm terrified, actually, that I might be in love. Not the sort I wanted to be in. The real sort, the uncontrollable sort, and with the wrong person. Wrong for me, anyway. Right for anyone else," he decided. He felt like a hypocrite for saying something like that. He really did. "I didn't think it really happened so fast. That seemed so unrealistic. I guess... It hasn't been as fast as I thought it was. But it feels like it was fast. Maybe I shouldn't be talking about any of this," he said, his brow furrowing like it tended to when he was thoughtful, confused, upset or all of those things at once.

Irene watched Warrick, her expression both slightly concerned and slightly interested. She just watched him as he spoke, and when he was finished speaking she continued to do so. However, after a moment or so, she smiled kindly at the older man. "If you feel like talking about something then you should talk about it." She said, screwing the lid back on the jar before setting it on the bench to the side where Warrick was not sitting. She placed her hands on her knees.

"I hear that love is a very unpredictable and confusing thing." The young woman said. "And with all due respect, sir... if you're in love then it can't be wrong. Love should never be considered wrong." Irene had a feeling that Warrick was seeking some sort of advice or guidance since he almost seemed to jump at the chance to speak about his troubles. In fact, she hadn't seen him around at all lately. Occasionally she would spot him on the street or they would cross paths in any of the military buildings. But for the past week she had not even caught a glimpse of him. Perhaps what he was speaking of now was the reason for this. Now that she was being forced to think about it, she supposed that it made sense.

"There's no way you can know if this person is right for you or not if you don't give it a chance. I don't quite understand what you are so terrified of. Maybe this person feels the same way about you. Do you know if this person feels the same way? Or are you afraid of rejection?" Irene looked thoughtful.

"You sound like me," Warrick said, laughing lightly in a very tired sort of way at this. She did. Warrick was the sort of person who would tell someone that love was never wrong, that they would never know if they didn't try, etc. But like he had said before, he wasn't like everyone else. He wasn't sure he should be taking his own advice. Doing so seemed incredibly irresponsible. It seemed selfish.

"There are things that I cannot do. Not only as myself, but as a man in my position. My rank does not permit me to have any sort of real relationship with anyone else. Especially not lower ranks. Especially not much lower ranks. And I have tried it out before, once. It didn't work out. I'm lucky enough to have just made a fool of myself and still have a great friend. But this is much different. Anyway, young people are young. I'm much too old in this case, and I don't even know what he-," he stopped himself immediately. For a man who always told the truth, he still figured he should know how to keep his mouth shut. How had he let that slip? That was another reason, wasn't it? Strangely it wasn't so much a moral reason to Warrick but the fact that in the military things like this were... Dangerous, for lack of a better word. He didn't want danger for Ace.

"I'm sorry. I should go. It's very late, I'm a little tired," he said. This wasn't a lie. He was a little tired. Maybe even more than a little tired. He didn't think he could sleep, but he hadn't said he was intending to do so. He stood and nodded politely to Irene, "I'm sorry to trouble you so late. You're very kind for listening to me," he said. He didn't think he had to ask her not to say anything to anyone. He had a feeling she would do that on her own. There was something very pleasant about her and he didn't think she was the gossip type. "Goodnight," he said, turning to leave.

However he didn't get far before stopping suddenly. He turned around and looked back at her with a very genuine apologetic look on his face, "I'm sorry, Miss. I should have remembered my manners. Can I walk you home? It's very late and very dark and I would be more comfortable knowing that you got home safely... Unless you would prefer to go home on your own or stay out longer. I just thought I ought to offer. You're not obligated to accept my offer by any means," he said.

Of course, it was perfectly natural for Irene to think that Warrick was speaking of a woman. But then he let the fact that this person he was talking about was a 'he'. Irene couldn't say that she wasn't a little bit taken aback by the news. She definitely wouldn't have pegged the lt. colonel to be... that way. However, it didn't make a bit of difference to her. Of course, there were a lot of people who would not think highly about this, but Irene was not one of those people. She was a very accepting individual. She had been taught to always be open and loving, unless someone gave you a good reason not to.

However, hearing that Warrick thought he could not have any real relationship because of his position was troubling. Of course, she knew that it would be very difficult for the older man if he had feelings for someone in a much lower rank. It was just the way that the military worked. She couldn't help but to think that this was very unfortunate.

Irene smiled gently at the lt. colonel as he got up to take his leave. However, soon enough he turned back to her and was offering to walk her home. "That would be very nice of you." She said, getting to her feet and smoothing out her dress. Then she reached behind her so that she could scoop up her jar. Soon she came to walk beside the man, assuming that they were probably walking now.

"You know... I understand that you must be in a tough position with your feelings and your rank and all... but don't you think that you are making excuses, sir?" The young woman didn't talk to Warrick like he was a higher ranking officer, she talked to him like he was just another human being. "Just because something didn't work out in the past, doesn't mean that this wouldn't work out for you. Maybe the reason that whatever happened in the past didn't work, was because something else is supposed to work. Even if you think leaving all of this alone is the best thing to do, you are always going to wonder what could have been." Irene had to walk faster to keep up with Warrick since he was taller.

Warrick thought about offering his arm to the young woman, as he was a very polite sort of man, but since she was carrying her jar he did not do this. Instead he just allowed her to walk next to him, and slowed down when he noticed she was attempting to keep up. Not to mention she had to lead him to where she lived. After all, he didn't know.

"I appreciate your advice and you opinions," he said after listening to her. He hoped that sounded as sincere as it was. "The thing is... I feel that acting how I would like to act would be selfish and dangerous. Or selfish because of how dangerous it would be. Not only to myself, but even more so to... This particular person. This person still has a life ahead of them. I've lived about as much as I ever will. I will continue as I am for as long as I physically live but I have nothing else to gain and really nothing to lose. Well, maybe something to gain and lose... But if I don't gain it, it would be better for us both. I can't put someone at risk because I want something so badly. Not someone who deserves a chance and actually has one," he finished.

Yes, he had thought about this. His initial shock had melted and he had taken time to let everything sink in. But then he had thought about all of this. How was it fair for him, always being the moral man he was, to cast all of that aside just to have what he wanted? And even if Ace thought he wanted him... Well, Warrick wasn't sure what Ace wanted. Maybe just to joke around with him. Maybe it hadn't been something for Ace like it had been for Warrick. They hadn't spoken about it, after all, but Warrick knew that was his fault entirely. He felt like a coward for that and not much like a soldier or a leader at all.

He turned to Irene and began to speak again, "I can't decide whether it is more selfish to act on what I want and find out where it goes, or to assume I know what is best and never give the other party a chance t-," he was cut off. Not by force really, but because he had seen something. Something moving nearby. A mass of shadows. "Irene," he knew her name by now, of course. He had probably learned it after the first few times they had spoken in passing. "I'm afraid you will have to finish your walk on your own. Quickly now, please," he said, eyes still on an alley across the street. Someone had stepped out, a tall man who was shadowed almost entirely.

Warrick stepped away from his young companion and into the street itself, and as soon as he did two other tall men stepped out and took a place at the shadowed man's side. They began to chat quietly in something that sounded like a foreign language. But to Warrick's ears it wasn't foreign, just nostalgic. "We were wondering when you would come out," the man who seemed to be in charge said. Warrick stepped closer, "Let me see your face," he said, eyes narrowing. "Let me see yours, heretic," the man responded, remaining in the shadows. "If I am a heretic and you are a charlatan where is there room for the truth?" Warrick challenged.

The mysterious man was silent for a few moments, then he rushed forward and smacked something very hard against the side of Warrick's head without warning. Warrick stumbled, disoriented and now bleeding. "What do you know about the truth?" he hissed, twitching. His skin was pale, his hair was short and dark. His eyes were darker. Warrick reached up and touched his head, he drew his hand back and saw the blood on his fingers. He looked up again and his brow furrowed in that familiar way. When the two other men closed in on him they were fuzzy and he didn't really care to see what they looked like anyway. "Treachery will not be tolerated," one of them said. Warrick's only thought in response was that he really hoped Irene had taken his advice and headed home.
PostPosted: Wed Jul 15, 2009 6:17 am

"You speak of your love for this person like it would ruin them." Irene commented. She had a feeling that she would not be able to get through to Warrick. It was sad to think that he would not get a happy ending if he didn't act, but it really was none of her business to begin with. She always felt like she needed to help people in distress, but she couldn't help everyone. She couldn't make a sad person happy. They had to do that for themselves. Warrick had always seemed like a very nice man. He had kind eyes. She felt as if he deserved good things. She was normally pretty good at reading people.

"I respect your decision, sir. And I am grateful that you appreciate my input. But I think Ace is stronger than you give him credit for. And I think he needs you as much as you need him." It wasn't hard to put two and two together. The fact that Warrick was speaking of a 'he' and not a 'she'. The fact that he was speaking of someone of a much lower rank. The way that Ace had interacted with the lt. colonel... and not to mention that Ace had probably said something. Of course, he hadn't said anything about Warrick, but perhaps he had mentioned something about the situation.

However, Warrick wouldn't get the chance to respond. Irene's attention immediately went to the shadowed men when Warrick suggested that she head home. She got a really bad feeling in the pit of her stomach as she looked at them. They made her uneasy. And their conversation definitely wasn't making things any better. When the front man rushed at the lt. colonel so that he could strike him, Irene let out a startled cry, stepping back a little ways.

This was not a good situation, but Irene couldn't bring herself to flee. Not only because she was startled by the whole thing, but also because she felt as if she wouldn't feel right leaving Warrick. But before much more could happen, something... or someone dashed out of the shadows and more or less tackled the man who had struck Warrick. Irene cried out again.

Ace wasn't a very big man. In fact, he was rather small for a nineteen year old. But he had come at the strange man with quite a bit of force. He grabbed a fistful of the material of whatever sort of top the man was wearing with one hand and he used the other to throw a punch at his face if he had managed to catch him off guard.

Warrick was feeling dizzy. But even without the feeling it would have been hard to tell exactly what had come out of the shadows and tackled the man who had struck him. It had happened fast, and it was dark, and it wasn't like he had expected Ace to be lurking around in the shadows at what had to be very near if not midnight by now. So at first he stumbled back a bit, brow still furrowed while he attempted to access the situation.

The man who had been tackled, however, cried out in an angry, surprised so of way. When he hit the ground he dropped what he had been holding. It was something made of metal and it hit the ground with a heavy, metallic sound. It resembled a cross mildly, but with some strange alterations. The other two men descended immediately and attempted to pull Ace away. But Warrick had figured out what was going on and got up to shove them away with a great deal of force.

There was still blood running down the side of his head, but he had put that out of his mind. When he got himself between the men and Ace he grabbed the smaller young man and pulled at him himself. Assuming he eventually separated him and his attacker, considering the man had probably been trying to throw him off as well, Warrick put himself between them. He said something in another language, something around sounding. But whatever it was the man on the ground listened. He sat up and held up a hand to stop the other two from advancing.

"This is not the first or last crusade," the man said, getting to his feet. "You will all feel your sins, and you will repent or you will suffer and perish," he added. He bent down to grab the heavy object he had wounded Warrick with, but Warrick didn't move, his main focus just to keep himself between Ace and these people. "I do not respond well to threats and terrorism. You've wasted your time and you will be outnumbered in a manner of minutes if you insist on making a bigger scene," he warned. It was true, lights were already flicking on, at least a few of them were. A couple people were probably peeking out of their windows.

This was a good point, and so without further bad guy speech the men turned and dashed down the alleyway. Warrick watched for a moment to make sure they were entirely gone, then turned around to face Ace. "What are you thinking?" he snapped. It was uncommon to see Warrick lose his temper, though Ace had before in a rare case or two. He had grabbed onto Ace's shoulders for a moment, partially to support himself, but soon found his grasp loosening whether he wanted it to or not. He shifted his eyes to Irene, but too quickly, and disoriented himself once more. And instead of stumbling into Ace he let him go in favor of stumbling to the side. He did not ask what Ace was doing lurking in the shadows so late at night. His head was a bit too fuzzy to form that question at the time.

The way that Irene and Warrick had been headed, they had ended up near the dorm building in which Ace was currently living whether they knew it or not. It was convenient that Ace had been hanging out outside at this particular time... smoking in fact. It wasn't something that he did too terribly often. Just every once in a while when he felt like he needed a crutch to hold him up under the pressure. It was sort of a last resort kind of thing. And currently he was feeling rather stressed. Let alone that he was having trouble sleeping because there was just too much on his mind.

Not only was he wondering if joining the military was a big mistake, but the main focus of his confused and stressful thoughts centered around Warrick. He was worried he would never see him again, but at the same time he was worried that he WOULD see him again. Just too many thoughts were crammed into his head. He needed to relax. So he came to his last resort. However, when he heard the voices and wandered over to investigate to find the scene that he did... all of that went out the window and he felt like he felt that he needed to act.

The young soldier had continued to punch the strange man in the face, his knuckles probably bruising in the process until he was finally pried away from his punching bag. Ace was breathing heavily as Warrick pulled him back. Adrenaline was pumping through his body, so he was rather jittery under the older man's hands. He stared... or rather glared after the men as they hurried away. And before he knew it, Warrick was scolding him. Ace opened his mouth to respond, but then the older man was stumbling and his instinct was to grab him by the arms and hold him steady. The whole thing had happened very fast.

Ace's eyes scanned the other soldier's face briefly before they came to rest upon the bleeding wound in the side of his head. "I don't know." He responded finally. "I... wasn't. I wasn't thinking." He reached up to gently touch side of Warrick's face, wiping some of the blood away with his fingers. He turned his head to look back at Irene who looked rather bewildered, but other than that she appeared to be calm. "Are you okay?" Ace asked her. The young woman nodded slowly. "Yes.... I think so." She replied.

Warrick had been wondering if Irene was alright as well once he got around to being able to think about his environment. His mind had been clouded in multiple ways. First by what was probably a concussion, and then by the fact that Ace had been in danger, or the fact that he was near at all. But eventually his mind did come back to Irene, and he had glanced over at her as Ace grabbed his arms to hold him steady.

It was a relief to hear that she was alright. He had worried that he had walked her into a terrible trap. He knew that he was one of the reasons they had come. 'Crusades' they had said. So someone had tracked him down, some survivor. Someone who was set on avenging the fallen and punishing the non-believers. He wondered if they would have struck the military here anyway despite his presence, but he knew his presence hadn't helped anything. He opened his mouth and began to speak, but then realized after a few words that he was speaking another language. He stopped himself.

When Warrick spoke again he made sure it was clear, something the other two could understand, "I'm sorry I can't finish walking you home... I have to file a report now," he said. He seemed quite serious, too. He took a moment to scrunch his face up in a pained way and reached up to touch the bloodied area again, lightly pulling away from Ace as he did so. "Something's not right, we should have been secure here. I have to send out warning... And file a report," he said. At this point he was almost more talking to himself than either of the other two standing there.

He shifted his eyes to Ace again, straining to focus on his face. And his expression change once more, oddly into a smile briefly. But it faded as soon as he felt another throb of pain and a spell of a dizzy sort of sickness combined with stomach tightening of another nature altogether. "It's nice to see you," he said, despite his pained expression. He patted Ace on the shoulder briefly, then nodded to Irene, then turned to head back toward his office. After all, he had to file a report about all of this.

Of course, this wasn't the ideal circumstance in which Ace hoped to see Warrick again... if he was ever going to see him again. He had hoped that it would be a situation where they would be able to talk... or at least a situation where someone didn't have a concussion. But at the same time Ace had been terrified to see the older man again. However, there was nothing that could be done to change what was happening right now. And even though Warrick assured Ace that he was glad to see him, Ace couldn't help but to wonder if he meant that or not. The lt. colonel looked like he had gotten hit pretty hard.

Ace's expression was one of concern as Warrick pulled away and insisted he needed to go and write a report. The younger man had a feeling that he shouldn't be left alone. However, he stood there as Warrick more or less stumbled down the street. He looked back at Irene, brows knitted together and lips formed in a frown. He must have looked torn, because Irene caught on right away.

"You should go with him." She insisted. Ace didn't look so convinced. "Are you sure?" He asked, looking back at Warrick's retreating form before returning his attention to Irene. "Yes. He's hurt. I'm fine. Besides... I think you two have some talking to do." She assured the young soldier. Ace's frown deepened. "I'm... not so sure about that." He muttered, shaking his head back and forth. "Go on. I'm a big girl. I can walk myself home." Ace was still hesitating. Half because he was concerned for Irene and half because he was afraid to face Warrick. "GO." The woman said sternly.

Ace stared at her for a moment longer, then finally turned away. He hurried after Warrick and once he caught up with him, he slipped under one of his arms so that the bigger man could lean on him. "I'm coming with you." He stated. "You can do your report... after I make sure you're okay." Ace was staring ahead at the road. "...If... that's okay with you, sir." He added.
