I'm in the middle of reading Mortal Engines, the first book in the Hungry City Chronicles by Philip Reeve.

I must say I am enjoying it immensely.

Have you read it? What did you think?

It's not Victorian, it's set far in the future after a devastating nuclear age. So much of the technology is steamy in nature, there isn't really anything we'd consider 'modern'.
Also, much of the story takes place in London, which is rather enjoyable.

I have read it. Its currently my #2 favorite book series behind The Keys to The Kingdom. Its a real page turner and it keeps you the edge of your seat. I like all the plot twists that are in the later books, but I'm not going to spoil it for you. It ends up being very ironic and ends rather dissapointingly in my opinion, but the journey to that ending was amazing. Though I wish Herr Reave would have made another series covering the adventure of Wren (oops Spoilers!) and maybe even a prequal with Grike.

Seconded. Those books are my favourite. I could gush for quite a few paragraphs about why, but for now I'm just going to say that they are my favourite, possibly second to Good Omens or Watership Down.

He also wrote Larklight, which was my first official steampunk bit of reading.

They are fantastic! I loved the two I had read, awhile back. In fact, I was planning on rereading the two I had read, and finally getting to the last two! A veritable feast for the imagination. I read them in 7th grade, so I think that may have had something to do with planting the seeds of steampunk in my malleable, angst-ridden mind.

I'm up to a Darkling Plain and loving them especially the character of Shrike. i picture him very steampunk-y and think that would look awesome.

It would make an excellent set of films

i love how recently old buried topics are coming back up again!

anyways, i read all 4 books, although i have yet the spin-off prequel, i want it in paperback, and the hardback is square, not even a rectangle... so it wouldnt fit in at all! gonk

i love the character of hester shaw the way she is in the 1st two books, and i love wren's character from books 3 and 4...
