One of my older fanfictions, tweaked slightly from its original version so that it is more like my current writing style.
The room was quiet, late afternoon sunlight drifting in through a partly shaded window. After a while, a teenage girl walked in, shaking her head and disturbing light brown hair from a hastily-done ponytail. "All I want is my algebra book! Is that so much to ask that my own sister won't even help me look for it?" she muttered under her breath, kneeling down to scan a shelf of books, in case of finding her text book there. After a moment, she let out a soft, "Aha!" and pulled a text book with 'Algebra II' printed in large letters from where it had been crammed on the shelf.
The girl was slightly surprised to find that another book had fallen on her lap, a slim, leather-bound volume with only a thin line, straight and dark red, going down the middle. A knock on the door frame made her look up from a thorough examination. Standing in the doorway was a younger girl with long brown hair and smiling brown eyes. "Hey, Holly. Sorry about that. I was working on some homework. Found your book yet, big sis?" Holly nodded. "Yup. And look what else, Tif." She held up the leather-bound book, green eyes twinkling. "It's completely empty. I think I might be able to find a use for it, how about you?" Tiffany laughed. "You always can. Try a Yu Yu Hakusho fanfiction again. Yours are always different." Holly nodded thoughtfully.
"Perhaps something about another artifact...maybe a book this time. I'll have to ask Jen for some ideas before I start though. It can wait for tomorrow, I think. Until then..." She stood up and the two left the room. "We've got homework to do, and mom and dad wouldn't like us to get bad grades just because of homework." Her tone became bitter as she added, "Not like they're ever home anyway. They just care about our grades." Tiffany half-smiled. "They love us, Holly. No matter how it seems." Holly rolled her eyes. "You should be the older sister, Tif. You're so mature."

Okie dokie then. ^^;;;
Holly opened the door into the garage, hitting the button to open the garage door before turning around. "Come on, Tiffany! We have to go pick up Jen, and we're gonna be late if you don't hurry it up!" Tiffany bolted down the stairs, calling back, "Sorry! I couldn't find my stuff!" Holly rolled her eyes. "You should clean your room more often. Come on, let's go." As the two got into the car, Holly reflected on the empty book she'd found the day before. She could feel it in her backpack, jamming into her back before the black bag went on the back seat next to Tiffany's blue one.
"Hey Holly, hey Tif!" Jen's greeting was, as always, far too bright for a Monday morning. She pushed Holly's and Tiffany's bags from the back seat to the floor to make room for her own bag on the seat next to her, smiling at the exasperated sigh from her friend in the driver's seat. "Sorry," she said, not really meaning it. Holly waved a hand dismissively, pulling out of her friend's driveway rather haphazardly. "It's alright, just get buckled. Because of your stupid car being in the shop, we're going to be late!" She sped off down the street, frightening a man in his boxers, who was getting his paper and shook his fist after the retreating car. Tiffany had to smile.
"I'll bet that made your day, didn't it?" Holly grinned. "Yep. Now then, Jennifer"--she referred to her friend by her whole name when she was being serious--"I've got some time on my hands later today, and I just found a little book. Tif said I should write a fanfiction in it. Any ideas?" The three planned for fifteen minutes, until they got to school. Holly and Jen went right to their first period class, and TIffany went left to hers. They met up for more planning at lunch, then a little more in front of the school after the last bell rang. On the fifteen minute ride home, Tiffany summed it up, "So there's a book, right? A really important book that changes reality. The book gets stolen and taken to the US, when the people have to find it before somebody screws up reality. Okay. How's that?" Jen nodded, getting out of the car. "Perfect. See you guys tomorrow." That night, Holly spent the time she usually devoted to homework doing a little writing...actually, a lot of writing. She was satisfied with it when she read back over it. It was a good start.

Tuesday dawned bright and clear, following almost the same routine.
"Tiffany! Let's go!"
"I'm coming! Have a little patience, will you?"
They left in a rush, picking Jen up just as quickly. Holly was tempted to grab her friend and shove her in the car. She drove to school in a sullen temper, so Jen made sure to ask, very carefully and politely, before she began to read what was written of the story Holly had begun. The same man Holly had surprised the day before managed to almost get himself hit by Holly's old, junky car while walking his dog. He yelled something the girls couldn't hear, but made Tiffany and Jen laugh.
When the three companions reached school, Tiffany took the beginnings of the story to her first period to class so she could read it as well. Holly had finally calmed down, so she and Jen talked idly as they traveled the halls to their classroom, with each girl greeting any people they knew, interrupting themselves in the middle of sentences as they fell into the normal pattern of their lives.
The two girls took their seats side by side. The conversations flying around the room faded as the bell rang and the teacher walked in, smilnig at her students. "Morning, guys," she said cheerfully. "Morning, Ms. Miller," came the tired chorus of voices. Ms. Miller was pretty and young, with an air of command that no student dared to defy and an easygoing side that anybody could like. She'd made sure everybody understood that she wouldn't stand for delinquents on the first day of school, and everybody got the lesson. Now she continued, "There are three new students here today, and the principal wanted them introduced so that you all know that they're from Japan and moved here for the year. Be polite." Her eyes twinkled. "Especially you, Holly. Don't take your temper out on them." Holly half-smiled, rolling her eyes. "Got it, Ms. Miller. No problem." Ms. Miller smiled. "Good. Then I'll be right back." She strolled out of the room, closing the door behind her.
The students took the opportunity to chat a little bit. Jen smiled over at her friend. "Japan, huh?" she asked. Holly nodded. "I wonder if they know fluent English or not," she mused. "They're gonna have serious trouble if they don't," said the girl in front of Holly, whose name was Emily. The whole class buzzed with conversation and speculation, some people standing up and walking across the class so they wouldn't have to speak across the room. They immediately returned to their seats when Ms. Miller returned with three teenagers, one dark-haired boy in green, a carrot-topped boy in blue, a few inches taller than him, and a red-headed...boy? Girl? Holly and Jen couldn't tell. Each had an alert air about them that said they would take any challenge.
For a moment, there was silence, then Jen elbowed Holly, who looked confused. The two exchanged wary glances, not sure what these new students were trying to pull.

The three new students surveyed their new classmates with unreadable expressions, occasionally locking eyes with anybody bold enough to stare, until the dark-haired teen's gaze settled on Holly. She returned it with a level stare of her own, her mouth twitching in a semblance of a smile. They probably would have continued the staring contest if not for Ms. Miller. "This is...Yusuke Urameshi, right?" She pronounced the name clumsily, but the answer was a nod and a barely accented, "That's right." Ms. Miller nodded. "And Kazuma Kuwabara"--she motioned to the carrot-top in the middle--"and Shuuichi Minamino. They'll be here the rest of the year, so you all have plenty of time to get to know them. Boys, my rules are simple: Don't screw around with me. Okay?" The three boys blinked, momentarily losing the wary air they'd possessed since their entrance, before 'Shuuichi' nodded. When he spoke, the fact that he was male became more apparent. "Yes ma'am," he said obediently. Ms. Miller nodded. "Good. Then you can take a seat anywhere you like." The three picked seats close together, near the back, answering questions as they passed other students. One girl, more bold than the others, asked Shuuichi eagerly, "Do you have a girlfriend in Japan?" 'Kuwabara' muttered, "You've already got a fanclub. Lucky." There were a few laughs from those who heard the words and class progressed, with every student eager to prove to these foreigners that they were smart. Some people failed entirely.
It was a nice day by noon, so Jen and Holly took their lunches outside, followed shortly by Tiffany, who sat with a few of her sophomore friends for a while before joining Holly and Jen. Jen immediately began to fill the girl in on the events of the day. "We've got these three foreign kids. They say they're Japanese, but that can't be right because two of them are redheads. Anyways, they say their names are Yusuke, Kazuma, and Shuuichi. And I'm thinking, yeah right! What a bunch o' liars! But they totally look like them! Can you believe it?" Tiffany laughed as her friend fell over backwards, gasping theatrically after not having taken a single breath. "Just breathe, Jen."
She continued, still smiling, "They've gotta be pretty bold--" Holly interrupted, "Or pretty delusional." Her sister continued, "They've gotta be pretty brave to cosplay on their first day at a new, foreign school. I mean, really. What kind of crazy person does that except on Halloween and at conventions, right?" Jen nodded, recovering herself. "Yeah, you're right. We should go talk to them and find out...if we can get them away from all those people. Honestly, there's a crowd of people following them, Tif!" Holly added dryly, "I'm surprised there hasn't been a riot yet. Hey, speak of the devil." The three new students came outside, the pretty redhead looking rather bemused as another girl asked him out. Holly rolled her eyes, and Jen and Tiffany laughed. "What a mess," Tiffany said as the three finished their lunches.

((I'm having fun just writing this all down. I don't even really care if anybody reads it or not. It's just a relief to rewrite it so that it doesn't seem like a seventh grader's writing (which it was when I first began the story). Whew. Fun times.))
--------------------------------------
After school, Holly, Tiffany and Jen were sitting under the same tree they'd eaten their lunch under earlier that day. Tiffany was reading the rest of Holly's story, what little she'd written between lunch and the last bell. Jen was talking animatedly about whatever came to mind. Holly sighed idly, leaning back against the tree and looking up at the branches over her head. She blinked once, and then twice. There was a person in that tree. A short person, with black hair and...red eyes. Their eyes met and held. Looking away for a split second, Holly was about to ask her companions to look up in the tree when she looked up again and found that the person in the tree had disappeared. She sighed. "Curiouser and curiouser," she murmured with a half-hearted laugh. Tiffany looked up. "Been reading Alice in Wonderland again, sis?" she asked lightly. "I hate that story. I avoid it like the Plague," Holly answered curtly. This began a conversation about what Lewis Carroll had been thinking and/or smoking before writing the oddest story on the planet.
All three girls were somewhat surprised by a polite voice asking, "Pardon me, but we're looking for a friend of ours. He's somewhat short, has black hair. Have you seen him?" Jen's head swivelled like an owl's to face the boy who called himself 'Shuuichi'. This action seemed to unnerve him ever so slightly, but he kept up a polite smile. Holly asked in a level voice, "He has red eyes, right?" Shuuichi nodded. "Yes. Have you seen him?" Holly shook her head. "Nope. I've never seen anybody who looks like that. Sorry." Shuuichi blinked, and probably would have asked how she'd known about his friend's eyes when Jen said, in a somewhat misty voice, the kind of voice used by those who had just gotten a good look at the handsome redhead, "Do you have a nickname?" Shuuichi blinked again. "Well, my friends call me Kurama..." he said uncertainly. Jen smiled. "Then I'll be your friend," she decided. Holly snorted, pulling a book out of her bag. Tiffany swallowed a laugh. Shaking his head, the redhead turned and left, saying he really hated to rush off, but it was important to him to find his friend.
After he left, Holly scowled. "That guy's got some nerve. Who does he think he is?" she muttered, savagely flipping the pages of her book before closing it with a snap as she remembered, "Dammit, I forgot my chemistry textbook!" She sighed and stood up. "I'll be right back, guys. Don't steal my car." She ran inside, intent on going to her locker and going back outside. It was a nice day, and she didn't want to spend any more time inside the school than she had to.
At her locker, Holly was having trouble with the lock. After two minutes of frustration, she stepped back and leaped forward, kicking the locker hard. There was a snort and a guffaw from behind her. Turning, Holly glared at the two laughing at her. "Got a problem with how I deal with my locker?" she growled, facing Yusuke and Kuwabara with thinly veiled rage. Yusuke held his hands out in a calming gesture, holding back a laugh. "Jeez, calm down," he said. "I just think it's funny is all. Don't bite my head off for it." Kuwabara added, "Yeah. It's not often you see somebody jumpkick their locker." Holly rolled her eyes, turning back around. "Not my fault doing that is all that works on my stupid locker," she muttered vehemently. After a moment, she turned around again. Yusuke and Kuwbara were still there. "And what's with you two? Are you some kind of crazy anime freaks out for a laugh?" She pulled her text book out of the locker, slammed it, and stomped off, fuming for reasons she didn't quite know. Behind her, Yusuke and Kuwabara exchanged glances. "Who stuck a lamp post up her a**?" Yusuke asked. A pencil came flying at him from down the hall, clattering off the wall right next to his head. The two teens stared down the hallway in disbelief.

Holly stormed outside muttering. When she arrived back at the tree, Tiffany and Jen stood up, ready to go home. After a moment, Jen asked, "Why're you so mad?" Holly answered with a growl: "I'm not mad!" Tiffany patted her shoulder comfortingly. She was one of the only ones allowed to do things like that. "Of course you're not, Holly. Of course you're not." Her older sister ignored the sarcasm, still thinking back to a few minutes before. She had to admit, throwing that pencil had made her feel a bit better, but not perfectly fine. She felt like hanging out outside, for the first time since junior high school. So she did, after dropping off her friend and her little sister. "Tiffany, I'm going outside for a bit." Her sister had waved, already immersed in making herself an after-school snack.
Once outside, Holly wandered down to the edge of the creek behind her house. It had been a while since anybody had come down here--she wasn't even entirely sure why she'd wanted to do this, but oh well. Sticking her hands in her pockets, Holly wandered along the banks of the little stream, occasionally stopping to pick up a pebble that caught her eye. She'd found a bit of quartz once, and loved how the little rocks shone when they were clean. She concentrated so heavily on finding pebbles that she almost missed a muttered conversation just out of sight around a wall of clay.
"We never get a break between all these missions!" whined a voice which sounded suspiciously like Yusuke.
"At least we get to travel to places we wouldn't see otherwise," offered another voice, probably Kurama.
"Like Makai forests," added a third voice which she didn't recognize immediately.
"Those places creep me out," said a fourth voice, Kuwabara's. Another voice, female this time, bright but worried, said sternly, "Could you boys please get back on track here? We have to find that book before anybody figures it out! There's no time to complain!" Holly, curious enough to risk it, crept forward. Just as she'd thought, there were the exact five individuals she'd expected. She had imagined countless scenarios with Jen and her other anime-loving friends in junior high. This had certainly been one of them...except for the slight worry she felt that she wouldn't be considered one of the good guys. It was a silly thing to worry about, but she backed away nonetheless, and stepped on a dry twig for her carelessness. Immediately, five pairs of eyes settled on her, as she stared wide-eyed at them. "Oh s**t," she muttered under her breath, aware that it was perfectly audible in this new silence.
