I'm going to offer my thoughts on a variety of materials and whatnot, but keep in mind I'm still basically a newbie to the Scene and have never tried much of this IRL. I'm just trying to get some discussion started. So let's start things off with a discussion about some of the most common materials you might be using. More may be added later, so feel free to let me know if I've missed something.
Rope - Milain already started a nice little thread about this, but I'll basically reiterate what I said there. Rope is, generally, the most easily accessible of possible bondage materials and thus the most realistic. Furthermore, it's easier on the flesh than say, metal, would be, and it does come in a fairly wide variety of styles so you can get the right kind of roughness or softness or whatever other texture you'd like. It's also very versatile and can be used for general bondage or for making bondage harnesses. Plus there's intricate stuff like Japanese rope bondage, if you're into bondage art.
Metal - This has to be one of my favorites, and some of you may agree that the feel of cold metal on flesh is hard to beat. As I've said before, I'm very touch-oriented and into sensation play, so I think that's a lot of what I love so much about it. Not to mention a lot of the stereotypical bondage gear you think of can revolve around this -- such as handcuffs and whatnot. I've recently started to love the idea of one of those heavy steal collars, and I'm just always going to love incorporating metal bondage in some way into my playtime.
Leather - This is another of my favorites, probably based on sensations and textures and other touch-related aspects again, as well as how it looks visually. It's kind of hard to describe what I like so much about it, though. It's a pretty strong, sturdy type of material almost like metal, but without as much possibility of digging into the sub's flesh.
Silk - Oh yes. More sensation play. I think this is made all the more delectable when it follows up something like the much more harsh metal bondage, keeping the sub bound while offering them a reprieve from the possible damage to wrists and ankles. I LOVE how this looks on female subs, too. I personally consider it the best material for bondage art. Yummy~
Once you've got the material picked out, there's still quite a bit of variation you can introduce to mix things up a little. I've always been a fan of coming up with new and more exciting things to add to play, especially when it comes to bondage. More things may be added later.
Suspension - I've recently become a big fan of horizontal suspension, but keep in mind you also have basic vertical, as well as the more dangerous inverted. All of them, however, have their risks. You've got to really know the way your room is built, particularly the ceiling. Know what it's like inside and out so you can determine if it's strong enough to hold a person's weight fully. And even then, you have to choose the right materials to set up the suspension. Vertical is good for creating perhaps a little more sense of helplessness, while horizontal could introduce hogtying, for example. Inverted can only be done for very short periods of time, or all the blood building up in the skull and sinuses can get dangerous. Just keep in mind the risks associated with this type of bondage, and I'd suggest keeping some kind of thick mats beneath the hanging sub, just in case. It might not look nice having them there, but you'll be grateful for them if something happens.
Predicament - This can aaaaalmost be considered a type of ********, so if you're interested in those and haven't tried predicament bondage yet, you might want to go for it. Predicament bondage is mainly psychologically effective, but it can also have some nice physical side effects depending how you go about it. A basic type of predicament bondage could be having a rope or leather strap or something similar running between a female's legs, against her crotch -- whether painful or pleasurable. But arrange it so unless she stands on her very tiptoes, she'd have it digging in. I'd just suggest you know your sub well before trying this, especially if they've got some kind of history of mental or emotional issues.
So now that I've kind of opened things up, let's get talking!

metal metal metal, give me my chains. bind me with em, beat me with em, i dont care, i love them all the same. perdiciment is fun and i have been in them many times. my advice is, like with any dagerous bondage, ALWAYS have the dominant in the house at least, if not in the room. the MOST my master will do when he is out of the house is set me up on devices i have the release to or mild hobbling. keep in mind whenever you are playing, SAFE SANE AND CONSENSUAL. that means keep it safe, plllllleeeeease and rember, ANYTHING can happen.

I really don't care what is used on me.
I have a bad habit of trusting my Dom, and so more often then not my life is in their hands.

Do I have to pick one? XD Leather comes to mind first, but I think that because of my love for leather pants *rubs leg* Mmmm.... Metal feels the best but for myself personally I have to worry about what kind it is and how long I will be exposed to it.

Theres also vet wrap. Its used to wrap wounds on animals, but also works great subsitute for rope. Vet wrap comes in different colors and is pretty cheap and easy to find at the local tack shop. The wrap is easily broken if need be, it also sticks to itself. Unlike tape it dose not take off your arm hair.
Also works great for people who get turnd on by pretending that their partner is wounded.

My good friend owns a couple horses, and she always has TONS of the stuff lying around. It also makes for quick, cheap soft grip handles for things, lol. I had no idea it was also viable as a bondage material. Thanks for posting!

I gotta say, metal and leather are the biggest ones for me, especially handcuffs. They hurt if you struggle, and yes, I've had my skin break and I've bled on my wrists from them before, but for me that just gets me going even more.
With metal, my favourite things are cuffs, like I said, and those collars you mentioned, as well as chains at the collar or cuffs. My favourite is being suspended just by my arms, with metal handcuffs and metal chains holding me up.
With leather, it's a bit more generalized. The clothing, for sure. Holy hell, can leather ever look sexy, and you can't help but feel sexy when you're wearing it, if you ask me. Leather cuffs can be nice, as well, when it's supposed to be a bit softer. Leather collars are my favourite, though.
Ropes and whatnot.. I only really like for the plain old bondage factor, being tied up or tied down or whatever the case may be, and sometimes it can make a good gag. I've never bothered getting overly creative with them; it was always a matter of covenience.

I ordered lots of beautiful black vet wrap *dies of happiness* I don't think I can choose between any of these. They're all wonderful. xd

"Silk...[blah]...sensation."
I disagree; pullled tight it's no more sensual than rope, just less abrasive, and given that silk is one texture alone I find it a bit limited if the aim in sensuality.
This aside, silk is still by far my favourite. I use nothing else, unless circumstance forces me to improvise.
> Silk can be packed into a suit pocket without being visible. > Silk is slippy, so easy to knot securely and easy to undo in a hurry if necessary. > Silk leaves no marks, but can still feel 'harsh' enough to fit rougher situations. > They pack so small that one can take four of them in a jacket pocket for use in any context - nothing else can do this. > It's also possessed of significant social caché, and makes BDSM much more attractive to inexperienced subs.
