07212009 / 19:53 Tech sat crosslegged on a pincushion, bathed in the glow of a laptop that Salamander had long ago given to her to use as her own. A homemade Mendel-sized keyboard constructed out of a Blackberry keypad and circuit board and a thin aluminium case sat in her lap. It was her third design and the most useful so far, although she would have preferred keys that were easier to push. Perhaps she should go "shopping" for handheld devices again. Tech closed her eyes and recorded the thought on her internal To Do text file.
At the moment, she was updating her automated insect care system to accommodate a vivarium for her newly acquired Carausius morosus mating pair. One of the walking sticks was currently moving along the top of the laptop screen towards a bit of lettuce Tech had stuck in the lid catch, and the other was sitting on the laptop's keyboard facing Tech, motionless. All around her bugs rustled, chewed on vegetation, and did normal bug activities in her clear plastic habitats. She had spent much of the time that the Mendel Labs were closed and abandoned expanding and developing her insectarium, and had started some amateur breeding of exotic insects for the North American collector's market to fund her private research. Her caretaker Salamander was away on business most of the time; Tech and the other creatures Sal had adopted during her time in Durem had become mostly self-sufficient. Salamander said that she stayed away because of the horror of Tech's insects, but Tech understood this to be "humour" - in reality, Sal was very busy.
Tech finished the code updates and reread the email Sal had sent her last week. The Mendel Labs were open again, under new management. Sal suggested that Tech should return and see if any of her old acquaintances were still in town. The little Mendel put aside her keyboard and stood up to survey the insects. Becoming active in the social culture of the Mendels again would take time away from her exotic insect business; but the prospect of meeting new Mendels and learning new facts about them appealed to her scientific curiosity.
"Dief," she said to the dog lying on his back beside the desk, legs up against the wall. The dog opened his eyes and regarded her upside down silently.
"What is your opinion on returning to active duty in the Mendel Lab?"
The dog wagged his tail slowly. Technetium nodded. She enjoyed the one-sided conversations with Diefenbaker; he could not use sarcasm or humour she didn't understand. Tech resolved to visit the Lab soon and see what had changed.
