THIS is an Action Replay. Commonly shortened to simply "AR", it is a cheating device that temporarily alters the coding of games to allow certain things or items. It does this through the use of codes that you "turn on" on an AR menu screen, and then "activate" in-game. The AR works with any DS game, no matter the language or country of origin, provided that that game has codes (ARs come pre-loaded with codes for tons of games, though).
In terms of Pokémon games, the AR can do just about anything. Popular codes include: » x999 All Items » All Key Items (including Member's Pass, Oak's Letter, and Azure Flute) » Wild/Hatched Shinies (turns all wild Pokémon you encounter and Pokémon you hatch into shinies) » Perfect Wilds (gives all wild Pokémon you encounter perfect 31 IVs across the board) » Walk Through Walls (allows you to walk through all solid objects) » Fast Egg Hatching (greatly reduces the amount of steps required to hatch eggs, so instead of thousands of steps, you only have to take a few)
There's tooons of other codes, but the ones listed above are the ones you see the most.
As for purchasing an AR, last time I checked, you could get them at places such as Wal-Mart or Target, as well as electronics stores like Best Buy. They might've pulled them from the shelves, though, since I don't remember seeing ARs last time I went to Wal-Mart. Regardless, you can buy one straight from the maker HERE for $20.00 (plus shipping, naturally).
Other shots of an AR: » Flipped over, with a game in it. » Plugged into a DS.

Keep in mind, however, that all hacked pokemon are banned from official events, tournaments, and leagues.
There is also the risk that it can screw up your game if you do too much with it. I am not sure of the limits, but it can happen.

I am not sure of the limits, but it can happen. not necessarily true about the "screw up your game if you do too much with it" part. it doesn't really screw up your game unless you do something incredibly stupid, like what i did to my pearl(i used it as a hack mule for the fun of it and it was very fun by the way) , so basically, don't cheat your way to a lvl 100 starter and beat the game backwards and you'll be totally fine 3nodding

I just got an AR. I only use it on Pokemon to clone my many events. Very useful, and cloned Pokemon are still legit. 3nodding

PokéSav right and not even the official hack checks will be able to tell the difference. wink
Also, the AR hardware itself can't screw up your game. Faulty codes are what do the trick, so always double check your codes to make sure they're input correctly and from reliable sources. Also, don't have too many codes "turned on" at one time, or else your game will freeze up.

I've overdone ARs/Gamesharks in the past, and I've learned my lesson. I've only really hacked once a lot and that was on old Pokemon Silver after I beat it. I couldn't use ride the ferry or ride my bike anymore. I had to reset it. I only clone now and that is the only one I need.

On the topic of hacking, I've been hacking my Diamond for at least two years now, and I have an extensive list of Diamond codes, and my game is good as ever. The only trouble I've had is the once or twice my game froze due to me having two conflicting codes activated.
So the myth about ARs being evil and ruining your games is largely, if not entirely, false.

Thank you for all the info. I would only want to use it to get all the pokemon. That's kind of what I want to do when I usually beat the game(beat the elite four and some battle frontier stuff) I would like to catch all the kinds available. I don't really need to mke extra copies of things or inhance levels.

I did state that I did not know the limitations, but it was confirmed, in this thread actually, that it will screw up your game if you're not careful with that.
Announcing on a thread that you hack is a great way to get the Mods suspicious of you if you were to ever enter a tournament. stare
I still advice against getting one. Over all, it takes away the effects of the game. I used to hack in the older games and it completely ruined the whole appeal of the game.

Over all, it takes away the effects of the game. I used to hack in the older games and it completely ruined the whole appeal of the game. @ Bold: I'm a mod here myself, you know.
However you'd be damn judgmental to be suspicious of a hacker, for the sole reason that they hack, when they enter a tournament. Seriously, that's horrible and if you think that way, you should be ashamed. It's immature, prejudiced thinking like that that makes me hate most of this fandom. Grow the ******** up and give people the benefit of the doubt, because not every AR owner is a retard who hacks 999 across the board. neutral
However, I do agree to use an AR in moderation, or else you'll make the game too easy and you'll get bored real fast.
@Gaara: No, you pretty much repeated your first post, but just elaborated more. I'm not sure if you were adding on to what I said, or actually saying something to me, though. Forgive me if it was the former.
However, one can use many codes and things will be fine, as long as they only use one or two at a time. Using too many codes total has no adverse effect on your game.

There are plenty of people who enter tournaments that work their a** off breeding and getting their teams perfect just the way they want it. I'll be damned if a hacker, who only takes five minutes to pull together a team, enters the tournament and wins over the people who actually put effort into making their teams. Specially when the hacker can just make the prize themself.
"It takes skills to win a tournament. It doesn't matter where you get your pokemon as long as you have enough skills to win." Breeding and pulling together a team is a pokemon skill as well. It takes no skill to push a few buttons and have a fully training, perfect IV pokemon.
In any case, it's simply not fair to allow a hacker to doninate a tournament while the ones who worked hard on their teams get thrown out.
