Charlie stepped out of the medical wing, where he had been playing Blackjack with his buddies. It was getting late, and a chilly breeze blew past him. He zipped up his leather aviator's jacket, which was more or less a required Ares kid uniform. He jammed his hands into his pockets, and started walking. It had been a long day, and he needed to clear his head.

Suri watched as Charlie left the card game, and followed him out. She saw him walking away and jogged up to him. "Hey, how you feeling?" She asked him, fixing her hair after the wind blew it out of place. It was getting colder out, and the sky was getting darker slowly. The blonde girl shivered slightly.

"What? Oh... uh, I'm fine," Charlie lied. Truth was, he had a lot on his mind, it was still his birthday, and it was shaping up to be the wierdest one yet. He took off his jacket and offered it to Suri. "You might want this," he said.

"Thanks," said Suri, accepting the jacket and pulling it on; it was warm. She looked at the ground as they walked and then said, "Happy birthday, again. Not very happy, though, was it? With the...fighting, and the, yeah..." She trailed off.

Charlie smiled, "it wasn't all that bad. I did get to completely own the conseler, although it did kinda get a little freaky towards the end..." he patted Surina on the shoulder, "and you made some awesome cake," he added sincerely.

The girl laughed and said, "Yeah, the cake was pretty awesome, wasn't it?" She looked at him and raised an eyebrow, "A little freaky? Come on, you were threatening to kill me!" She said, "I know we get into fights and duels and stuff, but you usually don't really mean to cut my throat open...," she looked up suddenly and asked, "You don't mean to cut my throat open, right?"

"Well..." Charlie said sarcasatically, "I have considered it..." Then he got serious again, "Was I really that bad? Or was what Phobos said-" he stopped, realizing he had just about shared with Surina the dream he had while he was resting. He didn't want her to get worried about the conflicts between him and his half-brother.

Suri smiled and hit Charlie lightly, "Heyyy, no killing, please," she said. She stopped joking and was about to reply when she heard the word Phobos. She started, "Phobos? What about Phobos?" She took a second to think and said, "Aren't you related somehow? Like how you're related to the other Ares campers, half-brother?"
Suri pondered it a moment longer and asked, "He's been talking to you?"

Charlie tried to look into Suri's eyes and lie, but something about her eye's made that impossible. It was like if you lied, then lasers would shoot out of them and roast you. "Yeah," he finally said, "he talked to me once or twice, in my dreams. He's the god of fear. Kinda an immortal version of me, only he's nowhere near as cool." Charlie wasn't afraid to add that last part. Phobos may have been a godling, but his fighting skills left something to be wanted.

Suri stared at Charlie intently until he gave up the information. No one could resist the mighty Suri stare. She smiled at the last part, but fully concerned, asked, "What has he been telling you? Obviously it's not all pretty ponies and rainbows."

Charlie knew there was no hiding anything from Suri now. "He's been in my head for years, more or less just gloating about how similar we are. He knows that I hate being compared to him. Deimos I don't mind as much, but Phobos drives me crazy."

Suri contemplated this and said, "Well, of course you're similar, you're both sons of Ares. You just have to realize the fact that you're better than him, however much he may want it to seem that you're as bad as he is." She smiled and said, "I mean, come on, you're not the one planting images of fear in kids' heads just for the heck of it, are you?"

"I wasn't," Charlie said, "but the thing is, ever since I first came to Camp, I've become more and more like him. Take our sparring match for example. When, I made that spider, and I saw your face, for one brief moment, I almost enjoyed it, beyond just the enjoyment one gets from a prank. And you saw what I did today. Five people were sent to the infirmiry because of me, and that's just from my own cabin! It's just, the more I look at myself nowadays, the more I see Phobos."

Suri frowned and said, "But you're not like him, you and I both know that. Only once in a while you get out of control, but most half-bloods, especially Ares kids, do that," she stopped for a second and then said, "As long as you have one tiny ounce of Charlie in you, you will forever be Charlie, okay? It doesn't matter how much Phobos may say otherwise."

Charlie smiled and nodded. That was just what he needed to hear. Charlie was Charlie, and Phobos was Phobos, and that was never going to change. For a while, the two half-bloods walked in silence, Charlie didn't know what to say.
