It had been a normal-ish day- Tellah was just stopping by the Deli to get some cheese to feed the hungry hordelette... common stuff, or else they would have eaten her out of house and home long ago. She'd brought Spenser along because he was young and there were a lot of drow mice crawling around her house and she was afraid he'd get picked on. Unfortunately she had underestimated Spenser, and while she was busy paying for her purchases he slipped out of her pocket... and grabbed up one extra piece of cheese before scuttling back to her pocket. Five-finger discount? Well, maybe four-paw discount...

The small crumb of cheddar Spenser had made off with was quite scandalized by this state of affairs, but, being a cheese, was unable to do anything about it. The mouse that had been eying that cheese, however, snuck out the door after it.

Tellah was not a terribly bright person at times... or rather not a terribly organized person. It took her several days to figure out that she had extra cheese... and not only extra cheese, but 'that' sort of extra cheese. Spenser, meanwhile, scuttled around going 'zeh zeh zeh' and looking smug- eventually Tellah put two and two together... and so she scooted back to the deli with cheese and thief-mouse in tow, muttering that maybe they had some sort of mousie community-service deal...

The singlemindedly persistent mouse that had been stalking the cheese grumbled irritably to itself. It had followed the cheese all the way to this house, but, though there were plenty of cracks to enter, the other mice around the place had deterred it, and it had not been able to ascertain the location of the delicious morsel it sought. Luck was on its side, however, for just as it was considering giving up, it had caught the scent of fine aged cheddar as Tellah was leaving. It stalked the human back to the Deli, carefully staying out of sight as it waited for the perfect chance to steal back the cheese it desired.
---
When Anna heard about the purloined cheese, she laughed. "As long as he doesn't make a habit of it, it's fine. Call it a free sample, if you will. A few free samples here and there are no big loss...after all, that's what that bowl there is for." She indicated the bowl of sample cheese sitting on the counter. "Don't worry about it."

Once he had finished pouting, Spenser had watched the other trailing mouse with interest. Of course his owner didn't notice their little cheese-stalker at all... and once it sounded like he wasn't going to get in much trouble, he lounged around his misbegotten piece of cheese looking smug, wondering if that other mouse would show itself...
Tellah, meanwhile, seemed to deflate visibly at Anna's reaction. "Still..." she folded her arms, "maybe you should make Spenser into some cheese if he makes it a habit," she grumble-muttered- she was just annoyed and relieved, but making precious little sense.

The mouse, like most in the area, knew the best ways to sneak in and out of the Deli. Quickly squeezing through a maze of cracks, insulation, pipes, wires, and beams, it soon popped out again atop one of the big support beams in the ceiling, peering down below at its prey. It didn't much care to jump down from that height, especially not with the humans below it, but it had a prime view of the proceedings.
"Well, how about this," Anna said soothingly, pulling half a metal tin out from under the counter, "if he does it again, we'll just stick him in here for timeout."

Spenser was ignoring the humans... instead he was watching the ceiling. "Zeh zeh zeh..." :3
"That... does have air holes, right?" Tellah asked, a little dubious- clearly she thought that Spenser would get in trouble someday since she was having practical concerns.

Anna glanced down at the tin thoughtfully, then pulled out a knife and poked a few holes in the bottom. "That should do it, right?"
The mouse above, realizing it was under surveillance, started moving in for the kill...cheese, creeping furtively down pipes and along shelving as it angled in for its precious piece of cheese, finally arriving, unnoticed by her, at a spot near Anna's feet.

Tellah studied the tin with the holes poked in it, then nodded, a little chipper, "That should be fine," her face fell slightly and she sighed, "much as I just wish he wouldn't get in trouble in the first place."
Spenser watched the other mouse make its way towards the cheese... and even cheekily let his tail almost brush against it as he stayed near the other's prize...

The mouse...uh... sweatdrop scurried doggedly to the top of the display counter, aiming for the delectable piece of cheese he had been chasing for days. He wasn't too worried about the other mouse; he looked like a pushover. That was his cheese, and be damned if some namby-pamby house mouse got in his way. "Mice will be mice," Anna said cheerfully, not noticing the mouse on the counter before her. "Can't be helped if they steal some cheese sometimes. Can I get you anything else, while you're here?"

"Speaking of mice, I should probably get Spenser now that I've brought back the cheese..." she looked at Spenser, who was watching something intently- and only then noticed a little mousie figure making a beeline for the cheese she'd brought back. "Umm... Anna? Do any of your mice have-" she squinted, "Earrings?"

"Earrings? What are you tal--" A faint jingling stopped her midsentence, and she looked down to see the mouse scurrying across the counter. "What on earth..." Too surprised by the mouse's odd appearance to act, Anna stared at him with fascination until she realized the other mouse was directly in his path. "Tellah! Your mouse!" she managed to blurt out before the blue mouse reached Spenser.

Spenser let out an annoyed "Zeh" as Tellah scooped him up out of the other mouse's way and then gave her a hurt look. "NO, you could -not- have taken him in a fight," she scolded Spenser, reacting to at least one interpretation of that look. She tilted her head at the other mouse, "...I think he has a -knife-." "Meh" was Spenser's contribution to the conversation.

The invading mouse triumphantly jumped on the cheese, gnawing eagerly on that fine piece of aged cheddar as Anna, recovered, brought the tin down on him. "Err," she said slowly, now merely confused, "I just caught a mouse...a...mouse..."

Sounding less than impressed, Spenser decided that his two cents needed to be added at this new development- "Meh." "...isn't that a common occurrence around here, though?" Tellah offered, "Admittedly the mice aren't usually so... accessorized."
