YOUR CHARACTER
Decide what type of character you want to play, be it good,
evil, serious, lighthearted, the choices are endless, you can be
a poor peasant or a great and mighty war lord, you can be human,
elf, dragon or even a squirrel, this is pure fantasy so let your
imagination run free, the only thing I would suggest is research
the type of being you want to be, for example if you walked in as
a sweet dark haired fair skinned Drow most people will take one
look at you muttering under their breath and give you a wide berth,
find out all you can about the race you have chosen and their
abilities. (tip: vampires do not often sunbathe on the beach)

Next give them a name, it's always nice to check to see if the
name you have decided upon has already been chosen by
someone else. Try and be original.

Now give them a history, it makes your character more
interesting, where were they born ? who are the parents ?
their childhood, give your character a personality you will enjoy
it much more and others will find you interesting as well. Try to
steer clear of "I just walked in and I have no memory of my past"
unless it is part of a plan for you to search for your identity, but to
be honest that has been done so many times most people are
bored with it.

DON'T make your character an all-powerful and mighty 150th
level killing machine, this is called godmoding and other players
will consider you an idiot, there are no levels unless you play in a
specialized campaign, give them some phobias or weaknesses,
it can be more fun !

Now for the tricky bit, once your character has begun to interact
with another it becomes loosely turn based, because we use
words to describe our actions and not pictures, it means that no
two players will ever be envisioning exactly the same scene,
let alone the same details. Therefore it is important, when
interacting with other Players, to describe your Characters
words and actions in as much or little detail as is necessary for
them to understand your intent, if you are an evil b*****d, just
like in real life dont expect others to start chatting and
role-playing with you, if you are looking for a fight make sure
the other character is wanting the same thing. PM the other
person and set down some rules.

DO NOT AUTO HIT
this is one of the main area's that
drive people mad, especially me ~L~ if you forget anything
else keep this point in mind, please!

DON'T post for example

~he pulls out his sword and stabs Alex in the leg.~

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER assume you have hit another
character, it is down to the individual player to decide what
damage his or her own character has sustained, instead
you should post

~ he pulls out a sword and swings at Alex's left leg~

If the other player is a good role-player he/she will post the
result

e.g. ~dives to the right, the sword slicing a shallow cut in his
left leg just above the knee, he grabs his dagger from his belt
and sends it spinning towards the assassins chest ~

The same applies to all actions, for example magic:
Don't post

~he casts a spell and watches as Alex lifts in the air and
flies into the pond~

Dumb, dumb, dumb, how do you know the character does not
have magic resistance or some other powers to combat
this action, it could even be a projected image.

Instead try posting

~he mutters the spell of telekinesis and sends it toward Sabre
attempting to lift him off his feet and propel him into the pond~

And remember it takes time to cast a spell so don't expect the
other person to just stand idly by waiting for it to go off.

OTHER USEFUL TIPS
DO wait until the other person has posted before you post
again, don't send one post after another, this causes a mess
and it's very annoying, discuss with the others and if possible
choose an order to post.

If you notice a fight going on, dont just leap into the fray, this
could be part of a storyline and you could ruin months of hard
work, PM the others and ask, they will not mind you asking and
most times enjoy the added interaction... and don't rush around
healing others, I had a character that spent months working on
a story, he was in the middle of a tense scene when some idiot
rushed in and healed him without asking...

I cried for weeks, sometimes the story calls for the death of a ct.

DO NOT use abusive language,
this can be very scary for a new person first time to role-play and
is frowned upon by many others who will consider you a childish
brat, use your imagination and if you really have to swear, be original,
make up a swear word. Ohhhh Suck'n elf !!!!!!!!

DO NOT cyber in public,
if you have read this far I assume you are not a perv only after some
cheap thrills and really do want to RP so I reckon this is obvious. If
the story requires some risque action don't do it here.

DO build your character,
get involved in story lines and even create some for yourself but
above all have some fun and if in doubt just ask... everyone will be
only too happy to help you out, remember everyone was new to rp
at some time.
