Im so exited! I'm taking english jumping lessons on arabians next weekend, and 3 weeks after that, I get to go see my horse in Iowa! Is jumping scary the first time? I mean, Im not scared, but I really want to be prepared for what's coming. Any tips, suggestions, or warnings?

Nah, I never thought it was scary. Just make sure to look ahead or at another jump (If there is one.) than at the ground. Don't look at the ground. o___o My instructor tells all of her beginner jumpers to grab the mane of the horse while jumping to help them get up there or something, not so sure on why. Make sure your heels are down, that's your safety net. Make sure your hands are infront of you as well.... Don't want the reins to tight, you want the horse to have alittle free movement in the head while jumping... That's all I can really think of right now.. Even though you probably already knew this. Well when I first jumped I felt like the horse and I were one and we were flying through the air. With the wind we created following through the horses mane and my hair. I personally thought it was great... Even though that probably sounds really cheesey. sweatdrop Well I'll give you a break, lol. Hope you have fun and do great. Even though you will!

The main thing I had a problem with was knowing when exactly to sit up into a 2-point. The main thing I can suggest with that is to just try your best to move with the horse, and when you feel them beginning to pull the front of their body up, that's when you should sit up. Also, if the horse is good, I'd try and give them a little extra rein so that you don't catch them in the mouth while they stretch out their neck to jump.

Oh my gosh its so much fun! Not scary at all! Just keep yourself in your jumping position and it'll all be dandy! I can't wait 'til summer so I can start jumping again! ^_____^

Yeah, just look up, whether it is straight ahead or at the next jump. I'm ok but not super good, so I grab the mane occasionally. Also, be sure to let them land all the way down before going down again, I tend to go down a bit early xd . I'm sure you'll do fine, it isn't that hard. I want to train my horse to jump, that's what's going to be hard.

Just make sure that you don't "stand in your stirrups" when you go over the jump, and also look up when going over the jump, because like my aunt said, "Where you look is where you go." Wow. Major run-on sentence. Anyways, make sure you keep your hand soft, because I tense up when I jump, so Hank goes faster than he was ALREADY going, and it's like a never-ending circle. Hope I helped some.

Jumping is really really fun! As others have said though, make sure you don't look down, because if you look down you're gonna end up down. Also, don't go into two point until right before the jump. Because if you go into it too early, and your horse refuses, then you'll be right over his head. But jumping is TONS of fun, and the first time you do it, you feel like you're flying, and you do it more it gets better. But have fun, most Arabians are really really good jumpers! biggrin

Since you're just starting out, you'll probably be doing really small stuff. Not scary at all. The first few jumping lessons I had were moslty cross rails at the trot, stuff to work on a secure position and such, and it mostly just felt like a really elevated stride. Once you get a little more height, you start to really feel the lift from your horse though. Grabbing mane will keep you from getting left behind or jabbing your horse in the mouth. Mostly, listen carefully to what your instructor says. They know the horses best, and have probably been teaching jumping for a while.
And keep your shoulders back! That's usually the biggest problem that I have with the kids that I teach. They can keep their eyes up and their heels down, but they close the angle of their hip when they go into two-point way too much and are too close to their horse's necks. They'll also hunch their shoulders coming into the jump. You can get into two-point early, but keep your shoulders back and your position defensive and you won't tumble off if your horse refuses.
Also, if you think you want to continue with Jumping, practice your two-point when your riding on the flat. It makes a HUGE difference. Just get really comfortable and secure in it so that you can stay stable no matter what your horse does underneath you. If you watch the big-time show jumpers and eventers riding in the stadium or Cross Country phases, their seats almost never touch the saddle. Learning to be secure in your two-point is probably the most important part of learning to jump.
Overall, HAVE FUN!

I remember the first time doing an oxer, that was scary, because my horse had been a pain that time while I was riding him and I thought he would throw me or something but, alas, he didn't. I was so happy, it was when my brother was watching me so I had to do really good.

well if you want tips i would suggest that you dont get nervous when you come up to the jump. if you get nervous, then your horse gets nervous, and then he/she may try to sidestep the jump. also, dont get left behind when you get up in your two point. i mean, it's not too bad, but ive done it before and its a somewhat unpleasant experience for you and your horse, and the horse might get scared if you get left behind. i wouldnt be too scared, its actually really fun. i think youll like it well its my favorite part of my lesson! once you learn a little more, youll love it. its like flying. as others have said keep your heels down and your eyes up. most of all, just have fun. well good luck and i hope you have fun!

Well when i was still riding english and i jumped my advice would be to NOT LOOK DOWN!!!!!!!!If you look down you will throw your horse off balance and you DON'T want to see what happens. And your trainer will probably cue you when to get in 2 point position, and after awhile you'll know when to get up there wink Also most of the time your trainer will put you on an experienced horse that will sorda do it all for you until you can take charge 3nodding And jumping isn't scary all you do is let the horse do what its supposed to do wink cool
