The Food Lady had been at the junkyard again, leaving tasty food around for the Jellicle cats. Enerybell didn't know why she fed them, and he didn't really care as long as he could get an opportunity to stick his nose into some of the delicious wet stuff. There was hard, crunchy stuff too, but his favourite kind was the wet food.

Right now he was crouching under a heap of corrugated iron that made up a nice cat sized shelter, studying one of the plastic trays of food. He wasn't going to rush over there until Mommy said it was okay to do so. Most of the time he waited until Cyrene or one of his siblings had ventured out before he tried something.

"Okay, she's gone." Bomberibux happily wiggled out from under the sheet of iron, not really caring if he happened to scuff either of his siblings on the way. Stubby little tail held straight up, he started plodding toward the trays of food.

"C'mon," he called back over his shoulder, grinning confidently. "Let's eat!"

In Bux' mind, there was a time and a place for caution, and the Food Lady's food had long ago been proven not to need any of that. Besides, the junkyard had quite a few jellicles, and there was a risk that some of the others might sniff out the food trays soon. You snooze, you lose, and Bux was not in the mood for seeing the delicious gooey stuff get gobbled up by someone else.

Enery nearly tripped over his paws as he tried to follow his brother as quickly as he could. Not sticking his nose out first was one thing, but right now he would need to hurry if Bux shouldn't get all the yummy bits. Enerybell had made that mistake before and he didn't want to miss out this time.

"Wait up," he wailed, "I want some too."

He reached the food tray shortly after his brother and pondered the best angle of attack before diving in.

Bux mode of approach to the food was something right between a pounce and a stumble. He dug his nose into it with relish and all but inhaled the first bite, immediately starting up his puttering purr. As usual, his nose had led him righ to the best stuff - the wet, gooey, sharp and a little salty taste spread like liquid joy through his body, but he could not linger with it. The next dish called for his attention, and he sampled that as well (If by "sample" you mean taking three big gulps in the span of one breath).

Aaaah, yes. Significantly softer and sweeter, but with an exciting texture consisting of pure gook with a few chunky bits thrown in. Not bad at all. And the next one... Ew. The next one was completely passed over: He recognised the smell. Once he had come upon a really tough and chewy bit in it that he had been forced to spit out again, and he did not want a repeat of that incident. Let some other silly cat have that stuff. He returned to tray number one.

"Yep, this one is the best," he stated, happily sharing his expertise, if not neccessarily much of the food in question, with his brother.

Every time Enery was ready to dive into one of the dishes, Bux seemed to get in the way to sample it. When his brother finally settled on one kind Enery finally had some room to eat in peace. He started to delicately lick the sauce off the bigger chunks in one of the dishes and when Bux came up for air leaving his tray unguarded he even managed to snag a mouthful of "the good stuff".

Sure, Bux vacuumed up most of it, but Enery wasn't too bothered as long as he got something to eat without being pushed around too much. He wasn't really interested in fighting for his food, and occasionally it meant that he didn't get much at all, but as long as their mother produced enough milk from the three of them he didn't have to go hungry.

"I like the sauce," he said, attempting to start up a food conversation. Bux seemed much more interested by the different kinds than he was, but talking about food usually got his brother started and Enery kind of liked listening to him explain the finer points of wet food even if he didn't really get it.

Enery's comment did indeed start Bux up on his favourite subject. He immediately looked up from his eating, swallowed, took a deep breath and launched himself into the conversation:

"Yeah, the sauce is great, but you shouldn't just eat the sauce, y'know. It won't fill you up properly, and the chunky bits won't taste as good without the sauce on them. Plus, they'll dry up real fast. The best way to get properly filled up on that food is to take one chunky bit, without licking it first, and then wash it down with about three licks of sauce."

He nodded for emphasis, taking quite a bit of pride in his knowledge of the finer points of making the most out of any food. Then he paused and considered something, admitting hesitantly:

"Of course... the dry stuff gets a lot better if you have a mouthful of sauce before you dig into it. It's like, crunchy and wet at the same time..."

Enery took the opportunity to grab another mouthful of food since Bux used his mouth to talk and not eat for once. Being quick around mealtime was important with siblings like his. You either learned to push and shove back, developed the speed to snag tasty tidbits when a sibling was distracted or went without. Simple as that.

"Never tried sauce with dry stuff," he said and tried to lick his nose. Getting food in the whiskers was really annoying and sometimes Enery spent nearly as much time grooming than eating.

Ah, why not. Bux didn't seem too interested in the dry stuff anyway so Enery decided to test it out with some sauce.
