I'm not learning Drow, but it's good that someone is!

There is a thread in FROL (Forgotten Realms and Other Literature) that has links to about 10 drow, dwarf, and other languages. Some are just for fun, while others are semi-serious.

The thread is called Language Translator Sites.

Oh! That's cool. I'm probably not going to learn Drow but I'll check out the site. Thanks!

I question the accuracy of such translators. Though they may tell you how to say a word in Drow, they do not teach you the grammar, irregularities, or idiomatic nuances that come with learning a language.

Hey, that's pretty cool. I'm too lazy to learn languages unless it's for school, but I don't mind learning a few words here and there.

Darkdoom has a point though - simple translators have limits, so it's not going to be easy to actually learn to properly speak the language. It's not a simple matter of translating sentences - I learned that in grade 12 French when I tried to do that with several written pieces. Needless to say, that didn't turn out well, and that's saying something because French actually has less irregularities and grammar quirks than even English.

FROL. XD I still can't figure out why that sounds so funny.

The idea of learning a few drow words is good enough in itself to me *shrugs*

FROL I love it! I still read it as Frog or Frolic. It's just funny.

Ha, yeah, it might be frolic, cause I always did think that was a funny word. Brings to mind images of little boys frolicking in fields of long grass and daffodils and butterflies. Except not really.

If I were to try and learn a language (again) it would be Quenya(again) and Sindarin.

Maybe once I master/am able to fluently speak to a five year old in a few other languages (like french, spanish, russian, arabic) I will try to learn it. For now though I might just memorize a few select phrases... for the el-oh-els. That's really the best you can do with a translator alone.

I should memorize a phrase or two just to confuse the hell out of people.
