*Normal RP rules apply* This RP is for the guardian characters Ariana and Ricca only. Sorry but feel free to read. This will cover how they met and their history together. We thought it better to do it this way than to spend a bunch of time writing up a back story. Ariana curled closer to her mother. The yelling from outside the doors were frightening. Gangs banging on armor and creating havoc raged around the alleys outside. There had been many losses because of them. However here in the slums no one cared.
She pulled the small course blanket tighter. The reed mat was itchy and the room was suffocating her with the smell of the other ten un-bathed residents of there small stone house. At least her feet were warm. Her 'used to be blue' silk slippers had long gone too small but they were the only thing she had left of value. They were a year old; given to her by her mother on her twelfth birthday. She thought of the little blue birds sewn into them and wondered how much longer she'd be able to wear them before they too, would have to be sold.
Her mother started coughing again. Ariana sat her up and went over to the water pot. Someone had taken the cup again. One of the ladies was still awake. Ariana made a drinking motion with her hands. The woman shook her head and shrugged. Sighing Ariana went and dipped her hands into the large cracked pot. Clasping the water tightly she took it to her mothers lips. Her mother drank quickly and thanked her before sliding back down to sleep.
Ariana lay back down next to her, watching over her. It hadn't always been like this. She had grown up in a small village along the borders. The villagers and children had all picked on her because of her looks and name. She had constantly told her mom to change her name but her mother flatly refused. Secretly Ariana began to tell others that her name was Xiaoli (Morning Jasmine). It hadn't been the perfect life but they worked a farm and there were lots of merchants bringing excitement.
Suddenly their village was attacked by bandits. The bandits had demanded that the village give them everything of value and ten percent of the woman. There were less than a hundred woman in total to start with, but Ariana and her mother were seen as disposable. They had spent three horrible months with the bandits up in the mountains. Her mother had cried every night and slowly Ariana's voice had run away from her.
Then one day they had awoke and found the entire thief fort burning. They had taken that chance to take a few riches and fled. After that they had traveled village to village but no one would give a single mother and a mute child work. When they did find work they were ignored and they were constantly getting ripped off on their pay.
Ariana's mother finally fell ill and they decided they had to go somewhere where there was more work. They trudged on foot along the river to the outskirts of the royal city. The living was expensive and they used the last of what they had on lodgings. The food was almost out and rent was coming up. Ariana doubted that they would make enough in time. She took off her slippers and hugged them tightly. There wasn't enough to sell at the market tomorrow and Ariana decided that she would sell her treasures.
Slowly she began to drift off to sleep. Outside the gangs continued and Ariana could now hear several people screaming. As if her mother could tell she was full of nerves she started humming a lullaby to Ariana as she fell asleep.
Sometime in the night the gangs were suddenly silenced.
Morning came and Ariana put the straw basket onto her shoulders. She kissed her mother goodbye and heading to the market. She was dressed in small tan pants and a decent looking red shirt. Of course she wore her slipper for the last time.
They were in the middle of the early Han Dynasty. The effects of the old Dynasty were long since passing. The taxes had been lifted and Confucianism was growing strong. She had just recently seen a pottery master work his way to riches and now had a large palace of his own. The largest remnant of the old dynasty was the great wall. Her mother had told her that many of her ancestors had died making the wall and that she should be glad those times are over.
It took twenty minutes into the center of the market and she had to push her way to her spot. The noise was deafening and the scents overpowering. There she began to unroll her paintings. She hung them from a large board running parallel on the stone wall behind her. If she sold three paintings she could buy paper for another six. If she sold five she could pay the rent; six rent and food.
Today she had five paintings and one that she intended to finish later in the day. She walked out into the crowd and tried desperately to drawn them in. She bowed in front of rich looking men and woman and motioned to her stall. Most of them pretended not to notice her. Those who did come over would talk to her and once finding her mute would leave awkwardly.
It hit midday and she had only managed to sell one. Exhausted she receded to the cold stone in front of her wares. Although there was no point she pulled out her brushes and paint set. She flipped open the paint box. As she looked inside she grimaced. There was barely enough paint left to last the week. Sighing she dipped the brush and set it to paper.
((I tried my best to fit into and capture ancient china. I hope this is alright!))

Tucking a stray piece of dark hair behind her ear a young Ricca wandered into the opening a smaller side street where small shops and open stalls lined both sides leaving a narrow pathway to walk between. Two well armored guards and a lightly laden servant followed a few steps behind her heads turning first one direction then the other looking for any danger.
She paused every few steps to examine some object or merchandise running her hands down a vase or else gently fingering a shiny piece of jewelry before moving on unsatisfied as she had been with nearly everything that she had come across. It wasn’t everyday that a girl turned thirteen after all and so she wanted something different, something special.
Her father was a very renowned architect having help construct the royal palace before she was born so she had grown up a very privileged little girl. Surrounded by silks and velvets, never having a need go unfilled, and with a constant stream of servants to look after her. Her older brother was the main focus for both of her parents attentions and so she was left to her toys and servants.
Setting down a small vase full of curling bamboo Ricca sighed softly and turned her head as movement out of the corner of her eye caught her attention. Blinking the small open shop across the street drew her closer as the smell of fresh air drew someone out of a cave. Walking slowly she moved around a girl of age with herself sitting in front of the paintings working on a new piece.
Tilting her head to one side then the other she raised a pale delicate hand to her chin humming to herself as she studied the painting. “You really are quiet good.” she said with out turning to look at the girl, “Good enough in fact that I want to hire you for a commission for my birthday, but I want something new, something unique.”
Turning to look at the servant carrying her few purchase so far she said, “Lee you will go with her and to help her get her things and make purchases for what ever she will need then bring her home she can stay in the servants quarters while she works.” Completely sure of herself that her orders would be followed Ricca turned and left the little shopped leaving behind the servant, but still followed by the two guards as she hurried home.

The sudden voice startled Ariana. The girl spoke with such eloquent Han Yu that she must have been of great importance. She wrenched her brushed from the paper and sat up. The first thing Ariana noticed were the heavily armed guards around the girl. She swallowed. Was she breaking some sort of law? No that didn't seem the case. Quite the opposite in fact. It seemed that she was being commissioned! It was more than Ariana could ever have dreamed. Ariana bowed her continuously to the girl.
Then as soon as she had come she was gone; leaving behind the man she had called Lee. "Well girl you heard her. Hurry pack up and lets get on our way. Might I also get a name?" He asked her.
Ariana was quite flustered. She nodded and jumped to her feet. Quite to the man's puzzlement, she ran to the next stall and kept pointing at a small pad of paper and a small set of ink and brushes. Finally he clued in and bought them for her. She bowed gratefully. Then she began scrawling a note; after finishing handing it to him. "I am dearly sorry for the inconvenience. Of course I will do a commission for the lady. I again am sorry but since recently it appears that my voice has been spirited away. I have only one condition that needs to be met. Without such I'm afraid I can not work. I know that it is not my place to ask of such things but I cannot go without. It is my mother. She must go wherever I go and must be fed and sheltered." Ariana looked directly into Lee's eyes determinedly.
Lee wanted to protest but to anger his lady was more daunting than taking on extra baggage. It was the servants quarters anyway. No one would even know she was there. "Alright." He agreed. "Let us make haste then."
She just couldn't believe her luck. Jumping gratefully towards Lee she grasped his hand and lowered her head to it time and time again, her eyes full of joyful tears. She rushed around her stall and packed up the rest of her goods. Then they darted around the market with a beaming Ariana leading the way.
As they reached the little shack where she currently resided she could see Lee's face turn pale. Truly this man had never been this far into the slums. Ariana had to hide her laughter as his rich stance now looked so very awkward.
Inside she darted over to her mother. She quickly scrawled out a new message and passed it to her. "Oh mother look! This man is here to take us to a rich girls house to stay for a while. I will be painting for her and you can finally get some proper food and rest. The gods are smiling on us again. Come let us get you to your feet."
There was little to take since they had little to start with. Ariana lifted her mother to her feet and she too bowed to Lee. Then they took a single bag of possessions and thanked the landlord. Lee payed for the rest of their rent and escorted them out.
Lee took them to the edge of town where there rented out a small carriage. They went far out into the countryside. Soon they began seeing many small rice farms and Lee told them they were owned by the girl, Ricca's, father. They eventually came upon a large land which a decent sized palace was laid nestled in the mountain side. Ariana and her mother stared with eyes and mouth wide in shock. They had never witnessed such splendor in all their lives. Many peaked decorated rooftops stood gracefully upon graceful walls and hundreds of white stone steps. It was definitely a sight to behold.
The carriage went around the back to a small off section of the palace. There was a long corridor connecting this area to the palace. Ariana recognized it as the servants quarters. They were greeted by two maid servants who bowed deeply and sung with such sweet voices. Ariana dismounted and bowed also. She motioned them to assisted her mother inside. As they ran smiling to do her bidding she turned to Lee, passing him another note.
"I wish to see Ricca and fully discuss my duties as well as accommodation."
Lee nodded. "I'm afraid I can not let you into the main palace without permission but I can see what I can do. If you could just wait here I will see if she is busy." He motioned to a white porch that overlooked the valley, on which a small bench sat.
Ariana nodded and went to seat herself. The view was breathtaking. She flipped open the notepad and began forming the cliff side with ink. With every stroke she tried desperately to calm her ever stirring nerves.
Meanwhile Lee went up into the palace. Ricca had returned and appeared to be in her quarters. He waited patiently for permission to go inside. Once in he knelt in front of the reed curtains. "My lady I have fulfilled your wish to bring the girl from the market. She wishes to meet with you."

Setting the unopened box back on her bed along with several others that hadn’t faired quiet so well, their innards scattered about the floor as wrappings had been tossed to the floor and the contents laid out in neat little rows Ricca turned towards the door delighted that Lee had made it back so quickly. Jumping off the overly large bed she rushed to where she had kicked her slippers to and pulled them back on hopping on one foot then the other towards the door as she did so.
Pulling her dark loose hair back in a quick bun, from which several curls immediately escaped, Ricca tied it with a pale plum color ribbon to match her deep purple Qipao. Straightening up she brushed a few wrinkles from near the waist and continued the rest of the way to the doorway at a more dignified pace. Pushing past the reeds she motioned Lee up and said, “Well then lets go I suppose you left her in my gardens.”
At his nod Ricca strolled off down the hallways in a gentle shush of silks towards the door that led outside. The scent of fresh jasmine and lavender brushed past her and swirled around her as she left the cool confines of the palace. Stepping into the shaded heat of her own private gardens it took her a few moments to spot Ariana on a bench at the far side. Moving along the gravel raked paths she quickly drew even with Ariana and took a seat next to her on the bench.
Her immediate reaction was a wrinkle of her nose and a shifting as she moved a few inches away. “You need a bath.” she said bluntly waving a delicate hand in front of her face trying to dispel the stink from her vicinity.

Ariana watched Ricca return with Lee. As Ricca plopped herself down and declared to Ariana that she was offending her she jumped off the bench and bowed apologetically. She took her new pad and scrawled across it. Then she passed it over to Ricca with her head lowered.
"My dear lady I am deeply sorry my state offends you. There was no bath in the residence i was staying. In fact this has all been very sudden. I wish to in fact validate the exact means of why you require me. If you could explain it to me? Please call me Xiaoli"

Taking the paper the Ariana was thrusting at her Ricca turned it so she could try to decipher the chicken scratches on the paper. “Xiaoli huh?” she said frowning at the red head, “You don’t really look like a Xiaoli, but if that is you name then that is your name. You don’t have to worry about offending me just so long as you take care of the problem at the next possible instance. There is a bath house down in the servants quarters feel free to make use of it anytime. As for the commission, honestly I am not even entirely sure what I want painted yet, but it is my birthday and I want a new painting. I liked your work so I decided that you would paint it for me.”
Pulling Ariana back up on the bench next to her, Ricca looked down at the paper and then back up at Ariana with a slightly confused look. “Why are you writing? It isn’t like talking to me will get your head cut off or anything. I hired you to work for me so there really isn’t need to fear me.”

Ariana shifted slightly so there was more distance between the two. She began scrawling again and passed it over.
"Again I am sorry for the inconvenience. I'm afraid I am mute. My voice was taking by demons long ago. This is the best I can do. I thank you for your graciousness and will partake upon your gifts you have given me although I have yet to be deserving of such. Also has Lee informed you of my mother? I'm very sorry but I have to have her with me. She is very ill and it is just the two of us.
As for the painting would you like a portrait? Or perhaps there is someplace around here meaningful to you that I could interpret?"

“I jus don’t know right now there are a few place I can think of that might do, but none really jumps out as the right place.” Ricca said leaning back thoughtfully as she took in the landscape before her, “As for the portrait I had one of those done last month and am quiet satisfied with the results. So no the only solution to this is to have you with me at all times so that when I do find the perfect thing you will be there to see it just as I do.”
“As for your mother, she will of course have to be taken care of. I will talk to papa about sending for the family physician to help so that you can stay focused on me and what I decide you are going to paint for me.” Tapping her chin thoughtfully Ricca glanced over at Ari, “Maybe we should call for the priest as well and see if he can help track down that demon as well.”
“As for right now though Lee is going to show you to the servant’s baths and see if he can find some uniforms that will fit you while we get your umm clothes washed.” she said eyeing Ari from the corner of her eye before adding under her breath, “Which might just end up lost.”

She was just to gracious. Ariana leaped to her feet and grasped Ricca's hands. Tears welled up in her eyes and she bowed over and over again. Her mother would finally be helped. She passed Ricca one last note. "Thank-you." Then she followed Lee to the baths.
There he showed her a new set of fine clothes like she'd never seen before. "Since you are to follow the lady as a guest these clothes will not shame her as servitude wear would. Please put them on without fuss. If you take your clothes off behind that curtain there is a robe you can wear to the baths. I'll take care of your old clothes."
Ariana could not have been happier she nodded with a smile and slipped behind the curtain. After she had on the robe she went back out and passed Lee what looked like scrap fabric now.
"Those too." He said motioning to her slippers.
Ariana stepped back and shook her head violently. Then she slipped them off and wrote to Lee. "Not these. They are important. I shall not wear them but do not dispose of them."
Lee nodded. "I will return them to where you mother's possessions are. Once you are finished the other attendants will show you to Ricca's room.
He then left and Ariana slipped into the steaming bath. At the head of the bath was a running fountain. She still had many open sores and scratches and the water soon turned a murky gray that washed into the small grate at the bottom. After the pain numbed the heat sank in. It felt more than amazing. She'd never had such a luxurious bath in all her life. She hoped that her mother too would learn of such wonders soon.
After her hair was scrubbed clean she dried herself and dressed. The clothes were made of rich silks and clung so finely to her skin. Ariana looked into the mirror and beamed brightly. This was like a dream. She then slipped out into the hall with note in hand and passed it to one of the female attendants. After the girl pointed her in the right direction she scuttled off quickly and began whispering to another. Clearly gossiping about Ariana. However it was nothing more than expected. Her foreign looks had gotten her into worse off than gossip.
Finally she reached Ricca's room at the end of a long hall. The guards outside nodded and opened the doors. Inside was another large hall and an even larger chamber at the end. Then a set of silk curtains hung either side of a large reed screen. Ariana was at a loss of what to do. She couldn't call out and it would more than rude to intrude. Instead she knelt down and knocked lightly on the stone floor.

Rica frowned thoughtfully down at her clothes wondering how she had managed to get tree bark and jasmine petals caught in the folds and stuck in her hair. She could explain the grass stains, streaks of mud, spots of paint, and jam, but was at a loss for the other two, well. Shrugging her shoulders she started humming to herself as she stripped down to her small cloths leaving a trail of silk from the entrance of her rooms to the brightly colored screen that hit the entrance to her bath chambers.
Passing behind it, Ricca brushed her fingers along the flours and hidden tigers painted on it and entered into the steam filled room. At once the humidity caused the loose strands of her hair to curl revealing her less the pure linage. It had been many generations since the indiscretion had occurred, but some of the odd genetic quirks still popped up from time to time in ways much like Ricca’s hair.
A sturdy elderly woman with straight set shoulders and a face puckered like she had just bitten into a lemon stood waiting next to the tub with her arms folded and a foot tapping.. Sighing Ricca quickly finished stripping down and jumped into the tub trying to avoid the old woman’s eyes. “Your late again Ricca..” she said pulling jars of soaps and oils from the shelves along the walls. “I know I know. It has just been a very stress filled busy day.” Ricca said with a sigh as she slid into the warm water. “If you don’t hurry it up you are going to be late for your own birthday feast.” “You don’t think they would start with out me, do you?” “They just might knowing your father. He really doesn’t like to be kept waiting.”
Scowling, Ricca slid further down into the water till just her eyes where visible above the water and blew a few bubbles. She scrubbed quickly and rinsed off trying to make up some lost time as she dried off letting oils and lotions be rubbed into her skin, soon the smell of fresh roses filled the room. Sitting in a set of clean small clothes Ricca squirmed as the old woman pulled a brush through her hair until she heard the light tapping sound outside of her room.
Jumping to her feet, she pulled on a robe and deftly tied a quick knot in the belt as her damp hair swung around her waist. Rushing out of the room she ignored the angry mutterings of the old woman grateful for the distraction from the torture the old woman put her through. Pushing the reeds aside she gave a delighted gasp and clapped her hands as she found Ariana waiting for her. Pulling the other girl to her feet, Ricca circled around her with a critical eye and a quick sniff.
“Much much better.” she said linking her arm through Ari’s and pulling her further into her chamber, back to the bath chambers, “Here Chi can help straighten out your hair.” Ricca pushed Ari down onto the stool she had just occupied willingly sacrificing the girl to the old woman’s painful ministrations as she herself moved behind another screen at the end of the room to finish getting dressed. Stepping back out now dressed in a bright sky blue she skipped back across the room to check on Ari.
“Well Xiaoli are you hungry? Cause the feast will be starting shortly and I want you to come with me and bring some of your paintings so that papa can see how good you are.” Ricca said grabbing a brush to pull through her own hair with much gentler strokes then what Chi was administering to Ariana’s scalp.

Ariana sat nervously down in the chair. Chi darted around her flipping her hair over and over in her hands. Then she walked over to a set of hot coals where two flat stones with handles lay upon them. Taking them in hand she strode back to Ariana's side. The heat from them could be felt as they were brought towards Ariana's hair. Sudden panic began to fill Ariana. Her mind kept flashing back to the bandits. The scars on her back began to ache.
Ricca re-entered into the room. All at once Ariana became extremely tired and confused. Chi brushed one of the stones under some of her long loopy locks and pressed the other on top. There was a loud hiss and Ariana promptly fainted.
And yet she didn't. Still in the chair sat her body, eyes suddenly wide. With a single motion she rose sharply to her feet and made a swift kick to Chi's stomach. She was sent flying backwards trough the curtain and into the bath that Ricca had previously occupied. Then Ariana turned swiftly off her heels and marched up to Ricca.
She ripped the brush from the girl's hands and tossed it over her shoulder. Then she violently slipped her fingers between the locks of Ricca's hair near her scalp. She then clenched it and wrenched it backwards so that Ricca's ear was in front of her mouth.
"You preppy little twit. Who do you think you are bossing me around of all people. I hate bossy little attitude inept female nitwits. Girls like you should been seen yet never heard. A girl like you wouldn't even begin to know the meaning of elegance or subtlety. I absolutely will not have Ariana or I create a piece of beauty for one who has not the eye to understand it!" She scoffed and pushed Ricca to one side.
She looked Ricca up and down "Now what is with these clothes? They just further my point dear. You should change immediately. As for me I much prefer something... oh more movable. But I'll find my own wardrobe later. You said we had a feast to go to. I'd much like to meet this father of yours and if he has any dignity he, as you said, will see how good I am. Plus I'm famished. After you change you'd better shut your trap and lead the way. I warn you don't talk back to me for I am not as partial to dealing in words as I am fists."
She crossed her arms and tapped her foot impatiently at Ricca.

Ricca sat in dumbfound amazement as Ariana kicked Chi back into her tepid(always wanted to use thatXD) bathwater and turned to grab the brush from her nerveless fingers. She let out a low cry of pain though as her head was grab and she was called a twit then thrown to the ground. Resentment started swelling immediately at the words being yelled at her. Words she had been told time and again through out her entire life till that was the only side of herself that anyone was allowed to see anymore.
Having this total strange come in and tell her such things as well sparked the short wired fuse of her temper and she rose angrily to her feet bright color in her cheeks. Till a stray memory crossed over from the back of her mind of demons and voices. It through cold water on her temper and immediately activated the analytical part of her mind.
“Your not Xiaoli are you?” Ricca asked thoughtfully eyeing the straightened shoulders and confidant air that radiated around the girl before her, “Xiaoli’s voice was stole by a demon…your that demon aren’t you, but you didn’t run away after all you stayed here still a part of her.”

"Seen not heard." She reminded the girl. "Well I guess this must be a shock so I'll forgive you. You are indeed right. At the same time, you are wrong. The thing is 'I' am Xiaoli. You really think that passive little girl that you just met would actually give you her real name to a total stranger? You can tell from looking at her she's been through the ringer, yet you think that she'll just trust you like that!? Ha! I am Xiaoli, she is Ariana. Good ol' pop was a roman. Had a stint with mommy and a halfbreed popped out. Her.
You're right on the other part though. I am a demon. If you don't believe me put me up against that little body guard of yours; Lee I think his name was. You're look at the famous leader of the bandits of the southern mountains. Ever heard of the Dragon of the Raging Tides? That's me. Too bad I got bored and well lets just leave it at that.
So don't even think of getting rid of me. You want Ariana, you're stuck with me. I wasn't always a bandit and Ariana wasn't always mute. She was going through some 'rough times' and we happened to meet. I seduced her and she not only gave me her voice but her soul as well. In return I liberated her from her memories, those little things one would be glad to forget. I think I'm doing pretty well for a demon. In fact she doesn't even remember I exist anymore.
Well even if you tell her she'll just forget or you'll deal with me. Now get changed already and take me to papa."

“ ‘Seen and not heard’ Bah you have no place to tell me such things Xiaoli.” Ricca snapped back at her, “Ariana, Xiaoli it doesn’t matter who you are or or were I am in charge here. I am the one who hired her to paint for me.”
Scowling Ricca moved around her to the limp figure that was Chi laying on the floor next to the over turned tub. Seeing the old woman’s chest rise and fall in a steady motion waylaid a brief moment of anxiety over weather she was dead. Pulling one of the folded towels that had been knocked to the floor as well she gently lifted Chi’s head and set it under on the towel. Then seeing as how there wasn’t much else she could do for her care giver she rounded back towards the “demon”
Folding her arms she said, “What kind of pervert are you to take advatage of a young girl? No I have never heard of the Dragon of the Raging Tides, but that doesn’t matter. You have the nerve to stand there and tell me she has been through the ringer and that I shouldn’t even dream of her trusting me right off the bat Then in the same breath tell me you seduced her when she can’t be much older then me and have taken her memories. Don’t tell me to get changed, you are not meeting papa Ariana is.
“It is her that I hired and so I don’t have to deal with you. Besides now that we know where you are we can find a way to rid her of you and get her voice and what ever else back that you have stolen from her.”

Xiaoli was about to snap back but suddenly got a grip on herself. No this wasn't the right time perhaps. The little brat had hired Ariana. That was a good thing. Perhaps the best thing to ever happen to the girl. No matter how insolent a tongue. Really of all the things to be called; a pervert? She realized then that the girl had the completely wrong idea and was taking her words much the wrong way. Well misunderstandings had always proved for mass amusement. So she waltzed up to the girl, ignored the insolent babble, and ran a hand through the girl's hair. She flipped it up sharply, tangling it greatly.
"You know what. I'll give you this one. I have much time here I do suppose. For your information the Raging Tides were quite the famous group of bandits. I lead them. Do you get what that means? It means your little babbling nonsense means absolutely nothing to me. Don't get me wrong little girl I ADORE Ariana, possibly more than my very existence. I would and have done anything to keep her safe. I will give her back for the moment but remember; one wrong move miss, one wrong move." She placed her hand lightly on the slender neck of Ricca, tracing her fingers on the vital points, searching for blood. "One more thing you should probably know. You kill me and she dies."
With that she closed her eyes and receded all at once leaving behind a half conscious Ariana. Ariana could not keep her balance as everything came rushing back. In fact she fell forward and landed very much on top of Ricca.
She sat up in a dizzied rush. Not again! In a drastic frenzy she scoped out the room. Laying down was the maidservant and beneath her a very disgruntled Ricca. Oh this was horrid! Things like this always happened. She had done something terrible she knew it. Ricca would probably never forgive her now. Although what she did she'd probably never find out like always.
Ariana jumped up and bowed sharply in apology. Tears flowed down her cheek. Then she turned and began to race out of the room. She had to leave. She knew she had to leave.
