how do i "quest" for an item?
do i get to choose which item i am questing for?
where would i go to do such a thing?

Some people that are nice enough will donate.
Usually if they aren't your friends the donations are around 100-4000 gold.
Actually earning the money by doing other things is a lot more productive then bumping a quest thread.

thats the thing though i've been trying to earn for the longest time, ^^;; i actually do stuff besides go online so i don't really spend a huge amount of time online, so kicking trees and posting in the forums takes a while xD

No no. Booty grab is a game you play in the Gaia aquariums.
1) Go to the aquarium forum
2) Find a good thread (Watermeat Elite III, Meat Monsoon, whatever)
3) Scroll the pages and look at peoples signatures with their aquariums in them.
4) Find a tank that has glowing fish and says "BOOTY GRAB" on it.
5) Play the game for gold.
