We got a new band director this year because our last one had twins and couldn't handle dealing with high school band stuff, and so now we have one who is known all over the city for being:

a) a really, really good instructor and gets the bands to become the best bands around, his bands always get 1's at contest

b) a band military Sargent

He takes most of the fun out of the marching season, we are outside for hours at a time in 100+ degree temperatures and we have gone 2 hours with getting a chance to get a drink of water, he yells at the freshmen for making small mistakes that they will improve anyway.

Anyone else have a director like that?

No, but I do understand how hard it is to have a new band director. Two years ago my band director got very sick, and we kept alternating between him and a substitute (who we did play with at least). Then we got a new one last year, but nobody really liked him, and he left too. We have a new one who seems really nice, thankfully, I just hope she stays.

But try and focus on the fact that he's a really good instructor. And maybe get to know him like before/after practice. Our guard instructor is like that. I got to know him before because he was in a local community band, and he was wonderful. Funny, playful, etc. But during practice apparently he was terrible like the guard girls kept crying. It'd probably be easier to deal with him if you know he's at least a good person outside of practice....hopefully. Or you could talk to him politely. Ask him if you can try and work in more water breaks or something. If you add that sometimes you feel like you keep doing worse (from dehydration) the longer in between them, then maybe he'll listen. Hopefully it'll be okay.

Thanks for the advice

Try to get him looser I guess, but still really good. And keep telling yourself he's awesome and that way you'll actually think it... Works with me >_<

Yes, we got a new band director as well. Thankfully he has actually helped in improving our band exponentially! Our other one got in some kind of trouble (no one really knows the whole truth) and we had a rough period of sub band directors right in the middle of the season. But, I'd say this new one is taking HUGE steps to make things much better!! We got the blessed end of the bargain! I can still feel for those who have to go through that transition period though. It's not easy and can be really frustrating! >.<
