It was night in the wasteland as a Brotherhood of Steel soldier went down under the ground for her final bout of training. A bunker was set aside for this one last obstacle course before the plunge, when this fine soldier was to be sent out to earn her name in the field. She was issued down a long corridor into the dim illumination, ending up in a small room with a metal door. In front of that door was her tester.

A small framed man of five foot six stood in a full suit of green painted metal armor from his shoulders to his feet. A bandana wrapped around his mouth and nose and a set of fogged googles covered his eyes. His head was completely uncovered, exposing a short full head of dark brown hair that still had dirt caked to it. Once the initiate was close to him he spoke up in a definitive manner.

"I am Squire Rahm. I will not be your squad leader, though it appears that the others are too busy to bother with you recruits. However that will not affect the grading criteria or absoluteness of my assessment."

The young man held up a clipboard and thumbed over a couple of pages.

"Since I was called here on short notice I did not have a chance to go over your files. Why don't you start off by introducing yourself."

Quote:
Objective 1: Character Introduction.

Please introduce your character in a post (minimum one paragraph). In your introduction, please describe any physical traits or mental quirks that your character has, the equipment they wear/use, and anything else you believe should be known about your character. The more descriptive you are, the easier it is for you and others to understand and visualize your character.

xxFresh from the mid-western Wastelands, the new Brotherhood recruit still seemed to have a patina of dust and more than her share of rough edges as she made her approach. With an aura of nervous energy kept barely in check, she came to a halt before the human, looming above him head, shoulders, and somewhat more. Her skin was predominantly a dusky grey, with a faint greenish tint to the extremities. A dishevelled mass of ashy brown plaits hung down about her shoulders; a moderate amount of earth was mixed into braids, held back by a thin band of rawhide tied about the forehead.

xx"Gigant Abraxia, sir." She rumbled, head tilting slightly as she observed him. A similiar bandana of tattered cloth obscured the lower half of her blocky, strong-featured face, although her wide brown eyes were exposed beneath thick brows prone to drawing together in worry. She forced herself to regard the man steadily, and repressed the anxiety pulsing at her throat and wrists, in time with her heart.

xxHer build matched her height. The super mutant was heavily muscled, yet not as bulky as one would expect--she looked to have a certain grace and speed not seen in a majority of her mutated kindred. Guarding her body was a suit of piecemeal armour atop a brahmin leather tunic and kilt, obviously handcrafted save for the spaulder on one shoulder, which was of better make and adorned with spikes. A broad belt weighed by many small pouches encircled her waist, and a pair of ill-made sandals were bound up her calves. She bore no obvious weaponry, unless one counted her heavy fists and feet.

xxAn introduction? She thought, with an inclination of her head. "I be from the West, and formerly swore alligience to the Master. I have since left that, and be hoping to learn from the Brotherhood. I used to be a scout and a warrior for my squadron, and I hope my skills be good now, too." She offered an American-styled salute as she had been previously taught, and awaited his first order to begin proving her capabilities.

"You had better have some skills, mutant. The Brotherhood doesn't pride itself on mediocre soldiers. Now follow me and we'll begin the evaluation. Oh and don't salute me again, I'm not your squad leader and I'm not in your chain of command."

The instructor stated as he turned and went up to the door. It opened and he ushered the Brotherhood soldier down a short corridor and into another room. Some straw-stuffed, burlap sack dummies stood around on metal poles. One such dummy stood off to the right, three more stood across the room, where a white firing-line was drawn on the ground several meters from them. Weapon lockers and ammo boxes lined the sides of the room where the dummies weren't.

"We will start off with the basics so I may evaluate your skills as you have them now."

The instructor said as he pointed to the lone dummy nearby.

"Strike the dummy."

Quote:
Objective 2: Basic Combat.

Basic Combat is divided into three sections: unarmed/melee combat, firearms, and throwing (usually grenades).

1) Unarmed/Melee Combat.

In another post (minimum three sentences), approach the straw dummy provided, and strike it with either unarmed attacks or a melee weapon (you may use any Initiate ranked unarmed or melee weapon of your choice).

xx"Alright."

xxAbraxia strode forward, methods of physical assault running through her mind. She paid no attention to the melee weapons available, having a personal preference for unarmed combat, as well as better skill when it came to close-quarters fighting. Her shoulders rolled, and Abraxia settled on a form of attack. The mutant was not slow, as was proven by her dash forward, and the quickly-risen knee that rammed into the midriff of the strawman. For a normal human in lighter armour, such a blow could cause discomforting internal injuries. For one with a heavier defense, it could be off-balancing, perhaps slightly damaging.

xxThe follow-up was a quick, blurred chop to the target's throat; her hand swept up to grip the 'chin,' tearing free the burlap head. She ceased her battery and stepped back to face the instructor once more. The mutant's grey eyes glanced once at the head in her hand as straw ticking slithered free. "It happens sometimes. Human necks are not very strong, and be easy to break without protection," she said briefly.

xxAbraxia's thick skin easily withstood the force of her own attacks; like most older mutants, her's coarse flesh had had time to strengthen, forming its own sort of protection. She had felt the impacts of her assault, but neither her knee nor the side of her hand ached. She let the dummy's head fall and waited for Squire Rahm's next order.

"About as easy as a 7.62 round pounces through a mutants eye."

Rahm stated before he motioned with his hand to bring the recruit over to the firing line. A table sat off to the side with an assortment of smallarms. Pistols to hunting rifles adorned the surface of the table.

"Now you will show me your capabilities with a firearm."

Quote:
Firearms.

In your next post (minimum three sentences), approach the firing line, and take aim at any of the three straw dummies provided (you may use any Initiate ranked firearm of your choice; if you choose a basic firearm without the burst feature, you will need to requisition one that does have that feature for the second part of this training exercise). First, fire some single rounds into the dummy(ies) of your choice. After that, you will switch to burst-fire mode and mow down a dummy of your choice.

xxThe super mutant left the melee dummy behind, crossing to stand before the table. She studied the spread of light firearms on its surface, then shook her head, lifting both of her hands and spreading the callused fingers. "I cannot use these," she told Squire Rahm, feeling a twinge of anxiety. They won't get rid of me for this? Abraxia shoved the thought aside. "My hands be too large to work these sorts of guns. I know how to use other firearms--bigger ones," she explained.

"Well weapons of that caliber aren't exactly common, so we'll just move along."

The Squire stepped up and pointed the recruit in the direction of a small crate under the tables. The light brown box held an assortment of handheld explosive devices ranging from frag grenades to smoke grenades. Though most were US military standard, there were few clearly foriegn weapons in the crate as well.

"Finish of the dummies with a grenade."

Quote:
Throwing.

In your third post (minimum three sentences) of the Basic Combat training, you will retrieve a grenade of your choice from the nearby ammo box, and throw it at one of the three straw dummies that inhabit the same area that you used your firearm(s) on. Describe the explosion.
PostPosted: Sat Aug 22, 2009 11:52 pm

xxAbraxia nodded to Squire Rahm. "I understand that," she said agreeably in response to his remark on the 'big guns.' She retrieved the crate and set it atop the tables. Her expression altered slightly--she could do this, she could work grenades. She selected three of the common fragmentation grenades of US military standard, which she recognized from her training at Mariposa Base. It was a period of time that had been like a mutant's "childhood," shortly after her memories began to truely stablize, and she recalled how to pull pins and lob the explosives correctly still.

xxThe super mutant returned to the firing line, pulling a pin after spending a moment to orient herself and determine the strength and arch she would need to cast the grenade to have it land successfully. Her large fingers carefully pinched the pin and removed it, and in quick succession her arm drew back, and then forward, flinging the grenade free. It sailed through the air and struck the chest of the dummy, barely rebounding before the pent-up energy within was released. Small shards accompanied the notable noise created by the explosion, flying in all directions and decimating the strawman. Tatters of burlap and shredded straw fluttered down here and there, making piles on the ground.

xx"There's one," she glanced at the instructor. "Do you want me to throw at the rest, too?" She still had two remaining grenades.

"That won't be necessary. Might as well save the munitions for future recuits."

Rahm stated before he motioned the soldier towards the door into the next room.

"Now for the next test."

He led them into an even larger warehouse than the first room. This one was dotted with obstacles. Small hills, waist-high walls, oil drums... it looked like a miniature reenactment of the wasteland surrounding the Brotherhood compound. No object in the room stood over four and a half feet off the ground, which oddly enough was covered in grass.

"On the other side of this world is the exit. If you can reach it undetected, we'll know whether your sneaking skills are top notch. If you can't... well, you can't.

You have already passed most of the parts that matter, so this is more of a test to see if you can sneak. This is to notify us of another ability at our disposal. If you want to give up, or don't care to go through this last part, you can say so now, or later on. I myself never cared to much about stealth.

You can't see him from where we are, but there is another initiate on the other side of the room, his job is to find you when this starts.

Any questions?"

Quote:
Objective 3: Stealth.

You are ushered into a large square room with many small barricades to hide behind (ranging from boulders to stacks of barrels and crates). You start on one side of the room and the instructor starts at the exit. The objective is for you to make it to the exit without the instructor catching you. The instructor has to hunt you down and can't wait at the exit. This objective will take the form of an rp with many posts (minimum three sentences each for both participants). The objective is completed whether or not you can make it to the exit. The objective is not failed if the instructor catches you... not everyone is born a ghost.

xxAbraxia replaced her spare grenades in the crate and tagged along after Squire Rahm, pausing when he did. She moved to fill the doorframe, inspecting the chamber beyond. An artificial wasteland greeted her gaze, and she frowned, chewing her lip behind the cover of her bandana.

xxShe had managed stealth successfully in the wastes before, but she doubted she would pass this sort of test. "I think we should move on to what is next," she rumbled to the Squire. "I not be wanting to waste your time." She inclined her head to him and moved aside, wondering which test came after this. She felt better knowing the stealth portion was optional, that the Brotherhood didn't hold everyone to the same standard. Her strength's didn't lie down the path of a ghost or sneak.

"Then let's move on, mutant."

The instructor stated flatly as he turned and led the recruit down a short corridor to a single tall metal doorway with no door on the hinges. He stepped inside of the small room which had two standard plastic rectangular folding tables set up. Upon the tables were all manner of medical supplies. Items ranging from thermometers, to gauzes, to clear plastic bags with assorted pills.

As the instructor came into the room and stepped to the right of the doorway he waited for the recruit to follow. Once the mutant was inside the doorway he dropped his pen from his right hand. Before the pen hand hit the ground the squire had a gas mask pulled over his face that had been hanging on the wall behind him. As the small ball point pen made contact with the ground the instructor spun about towards the doorway and depressed a small white circular button. With a loud thud the doorway was filled with a solid two foot steel door while a foggy gas rolled in from the ducts above.

With a tone equally as flat as his previous statement from behind the gas mask, "Last test. Fix yourself recruit."

Quote:
Objective 4: First Aid.

You have been injured. The instructor will decide on the injury inflicted. It may be a simple cut/laceration, a bullet to the leg, or rad poisoning. You are to describe your treatment in a post (minimum three sentences) on how you cure yourself of the injury.

((The gas is a blood agent.))
PostPosted: Tue Sep 15, 2009 12:00 pm

xxAbraxia gasped, then clapped a hand over her mouth, brow furrowing. "What be this? I--I am not a medic!" She blurted at the Squire, shuffling nervously around as if trying to avoid the cloudy gas. The mutant rarely took serious injury--in most cases, her kind simply fought until dead, making medics unnecessary. She knew how to apply a Stimpak to relieve the worst of pain and bloodloss to an injury, but this...?

xxWhat was it going to do to her? She tried to concentrate and detect what might be wrong. She felt mildly dizzy the longer she stood in the gas, her stomach a trifle upset, but that could just be anxiety. Abraxia snorted, rubbing her forehead. "This is not what I do," she said aloud. "What do I do to fix it? A medic would know... think I need one." She wasn't overly disappointed she would 'fail' this portion of the training. If someone needed medical attention, they hopefully wouldn't turn to her.

The soldier took up his clipboard and pen to scribble down a few notes as he observed the mutant panicing amidst the gas. Between words that he wrote he kept a close eye on her lips waiting for them to become discolored. The fact that she spoke in the cloudy room assured him that she had indeed consumed a lethal amount of the agent. He was certain at least that it was lethal to a small deathclaw brood, however his knowledge of mutant anatomy wasn't anything to boast about. As he sighted what he believed to be the faintest amount of blue-ing to the recruits lips, Joe made quick steps to her while producing two auto injectors from the small of his back. He jabbed them solidly into the beast praying that it wouldn't strike him in fear while speaking through the gas mask,

"That's enough mutant. These shots will put the agent dormant for a short while. However you'll need to get over to Medical as soon as the door opens to get detoxed. You're not contagious but you are highly poisoned and will die if you don't obey myself and the medical staff."

The gas began to dissipate while he spoke as fans kicked on to syphon the gas from the room. Within a couple of minutes from the end of his talking the door hissed as the seal broke and it swung open revealing a tall blond initiate in leather armor. The soldier had a 9mm strapped to his leg and the insignia of the BoS military police on his left forearm. He gave the instructor a look of slight disgust before turning to the recruit.

"Follow this man to Medical now. Welcome to the Brotherhood."

With that Joe sighed and went back to finishing his report.
