ok, so..it doesn't turn on at all when you try to? have you tried with AC and without AC?..if it works with AC..it could be the battery is either empty or dead..
*needs to know exactly what is wrong with it besides "the lights turned off"* does it turn on or make any noises/beeps? if so..does anything appear on the screen? if so does it get into windows or does it stop at an error message?

AC = Power Cable Connected
Battery = Without Power Cable connected

To get a stuck CD out
Get a medium-size or large paper clip and straighten the long leg. Look closely at the front of the CD drive; you should find a hole that's about the right size for the paper clip. (Not the earphone jack, of course!) Sometimes there's a groove just below the drive door instead of a hole.

Carefully push the paper clip straight into the hole to release the catch. The drive door should open without too much pressure. If this doesn't work, the drive may be physically jammed shut. In that case you'll need a hardware technician to fix it.

Just a warning in case you don't already know. Don't buy anything made my sony. Recently they've purposly put viruses into CDs and such so when you play it on your computer it automatly loads onto your computer. What it will do is open up a lot of scurty holes in your computer and mask viruses so that your avti virus softwere can't find it. Also becareful when updating survice pack 2 because i'm very sure it has the same virus on it.

Sony sued over controversial CDs

A CD by Louis Armstrong was on the list of XCP-using discs
Sony BMG's woes in the US over its much-criticised anti-piracy CD software have deepened.

It is facing two separate lawsuits in Texas and California.

The Texan lawsuit accuses Sony of installing spyware and is seeking damages of up to $100,000 in damages for each violation.

In California, digital rights group, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), is suing Sony for allegedly collecting personal data.

'Cloak and dagger deceit'

The so-called XCP (Extended Copy Protection) software is installed on around 50 of Sony's CDs and up to two million copies have been sold in the US.

It is intended to restrict copying of CDs but security experts have criticised it for using virus-like techniques.

People buy these CDs to listen to music. What they don't bargain for is the computer invasion that is unleashed by Sony BMG
Greg Abbot, Texas Attorney General

Sony's long-term CD woes
The row began when Windows expert Mark Russinovich found that Sony BMG was using a so-called rootkit to conceal the program used to stop some of its CDs being copied.

Rootkits are being increasingly used by virus makers to hide their malicious code deep within the Windows operating system.

XCP, created by UK firm First 4 Internet, employed similar cloaking systems, said security experts.

Other lawsuits are pending against Sony in New York and Italy.

"Sony has engaged in a technological version of cloak and dagger deceit against consumers by hiding secret files on their computers," said Greg Abbot, Attorney General for Texas.

Consumers, who thought they were buying a music CD, "instead, received spyware that can damage a computer, subject it to viruses and expose the consumer to possible identity crime", he said.

"People buy these CDs to listen to music. What they don't bargain for is the computer invasion that is unleashed by Sony BMG," he added.

The Texan lawsuit is seeking up to $100,000 for every Texan affected by the controversial copy protection system, under its Consumer Protection Against Computer Spyware Act, enacted earlier this year.

Sony has said it is co-operating fully with the attorney general's office.

It announced last week that customers could exchange CDs containing XCP software for new ones and it also offered software for people to download to fix the security vulnerabilities on their computers.

The firm said it had recalled all CDs installed with XCP software, but Texan investigators said they had bought several of the CDs at shops in Austin on Sunday.

Personal data

A separate lawsuit been filed in Los Angeles by the EFF, a non-profit consumer advocacy group which attempts to address the balance between new technologies and civil liberties.

The EFF said that the XCP software is extremely difficult to remove and can mean users have to reformat their computer's hard drive.

Cindy Cohn, legal director of the EFF has accused Sony BMG of not doing enough to inform consumers about the problems.

"Just putting a little something up on their website I don't think is sufficient," she said.

The EFF has issues not just with the XCP software but with SunnComm MediaMax software, which is said to install files on computers even if users have declined to accept its licensing agreement.

It said the software tracks customers' listening habits, although Sony has denied that the company collects such data.

This SunnComm software is on as many as 24 million CDs.

It is suing under a Californian law which bans collecting personally identifiable information through deceptive means.

Last week it was revealed that hackers are already exploiting flaws in the program Sony is using to remove the controversial software.

Currently they are just proof of concept hacks, although security firms warned that there was potential for more serious attacks.

(Personal Comment: All the more reason to download MP3s FREE! and not buy CDs..kind of destroys their own Anti-Piracy Campain..since..its either buy a CD with spyware preventing CD Copying and collecting computer data, or download free MP3s and listen without even paying a shiny penny and without spyware.(3 CDs = $30-$50+, MP3 Player = $30-$100+ & can easily update/change your song collection FREE. )

oh brother here's something i've been wondering for a while. How do you reformat a computer without the use of a Windows (or any other kinda of SM) disk??? I know there's a way to do it without any disks because i've done it before without the use of a disk.

oh brother here's something i've been wondering for a while. How do you reformat a computer without the use of a Windows (or any other kinda of SM) disk??? I know there's a way to do it without any disks because i've done it before without the use of a disk.
First off, ask yourself.."Are you sure you want to do this, if you format, you will lose ALL data on the drive you format"..if you're sure..then ask yourself again "Are you REALLY REALLY sure?..ALL data..and will not be recoverable"..if still yes..then ok..restart your PC and as its starting up, keep pressing the F8 key untill it goes into the Windows Startup selection screen..it should have a listing of Safe mode, Safe mode with networking, etc etc...[shown below]
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
Select "Safe Mode with Command Prompt"..then it will load and bring up DOS Prompt "C:/>"...now..type "Format :" so..for example "Format C:" if thats the drive you want to format.

to re-install windows without a disk, you need to go into the bios, and every bios is different. get into the bios by pressing the "delete" key as your computer is turning on. when in the Bios, there should be somewhere (in many different places depending on bios) a selection of Boot Sequence should say somthing like "A,C,CDROM" which is the order it will check for somthing to run first it checks A:..if nothing..then C drive (which usualy has windows)..if theres no hardrive..then CDROM...[shown below]
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

you need to change it so that is shows either "A,CDROM,C" or "CDROM,C,A" ..that way it boots the CD before C:..once thats done..put in the windows CD and restart the computer..it will boot off the CD..and install windows...when the install makes you restart the computer...go back into the bios and change it back to what the default was.. (A,C,CDROM)...and then..that should be it

if you need any mroe help..let me know..just..be careful..formatting is not somthing to be done without serious thought and being sure you know what you're doing. since if you only have 1 computer and mess it up and don't know what to do..it will be hard to get help from me to fix it without your PC working..
