I AGREE, I THINK ITS BOTH TOO

Well it originally was an art, people expressed it by sparring... Dunno about today, but still an art that competition theaters like the Olympic are to show martial arts and that's the reason why we shout in Martial Arts to show our courage even if we do something wrong. But as a sport, mmm... The world is changing, people usually make a martial arts into the Olympics if its recognized as a sport.... v.v" Which is sad because neither of mine are in the Olympics~ But lucky you Judo and Taekwondo guys~

I belive martial arts aren't sport. When they are a sport they lose the martial part. Etemology suggetst martial art means art of war. A sport is not a war, or more accurately a battle. Now, that's not to say sports dosen't help. If you only practice forms you will die. If you only spar with the same people you will die. That's how sport fits in the art of war

It consider it both ... I am an amateur mixed martial arts fighter ... I have a record of 23-6-3 ... that's what I call the sports aspect of it ... my record ... as for the art ... how I got my wins ... espeically my submission victories were impressive and beautiful ...

I believe it is an art, and should never have been mixed into an art. I am not a fan of all the Mctournaments that are out there where kumite participants are covered almost head to toe in padding. Kata, while it's great for learning your technique isn't a sport either, that is the art part of a style.

I think that martial arts becoming a sport is the reason for there being so many Mcdojos around, they train their students to do point sparring, or do flashy worthless kata.

i personally despise point sparring.

now for MMA, i would like it more, if there were more actual martial artists, people who have been studying an art or arts for a while, and not just going to an MMA gym to learn a few tricks on the ground, and then jump in the cage.

I'm sad i missed watching the early UFC when it was martial artists against martial artist.

In my years of study, I've come to the conclusion that the martial art and the martial sport are almost entirely removed from each other. Fully two of the arts I practice have zero sports form, while two have well-established traditions of sport and play.

Personally, I think that the art forms of a martial art cannot be sports, because to practice and art and then turn it into a sport is to weaken the art infinitely from its true form. Case in point, the rules against fine joint manipulation in most MMA competitions completely negate the most advanced techniques of many, many martial arts. I'm not poo-poo-ing MMA, because it has its place on the street, but the sports form has neutered it.

The good thing about sports is the awareness they raise about the martial arts, and the demonstration quality of them. Thanks to olympic TKD and Judo, enrollment in those arts has sky-rocketed. I myself gained three students just doing a Krav Maga demo here locally (not really sport, but the idea is the same.)

forgive me if im out of my place for being new to the guild and only having trained in kung fu for six months as a white belt now, but i believe that martial arts is a gift from one to another through body and spirit and can be expressed as an art in its purest form, however modern day charlattan's care nothing for the passing on of the arts and gifts and care only for the monetary gain their art retains to them, and thus they fall off the path of martial arts and lean over to the sports side they create for it ie. forms competitions, point sparring, fancy weapons competitions, and breaking contests. they also decline to teach you the history of your style and its origins and significance in history should it hold any, for those of us fortunate enough to perform at a dojo that holds true to those tenets instilled in them from the first moment they wore their gi, to when they earned their black belt it is an honor. i am not dis-crediting anyone's school or style, merely saying we are all fortunate to have something to pass onto a future generation and disciple's should we so eventually choose and for that i believe martial arts is an art, because it is beautiful to view, and even more enjoyable to perform

I agree with you... if it becomes a sport, it's no longer martial. Take TKD point-sparring. That would NEVER work on the street or in battle.
