The Greenhouse
A Neville Longbottom Thread

It takes a sophisticated mind to understand the heart, soul and mind behind the round face of Neville Longbottom. He has lived a scared life being belittled by peers and family and always loving his parents even though they don't even recognize him. He stands up for what is right and has always stood up for himself, even if it doesn't seem like he has. As far as we can see, his closest friends are Harry and Hermione, but he isn't as close to them as Ron is or they to each other. He has grown strong over the years and is really starting to shine.

I'm a huge fan of Red Hen's reading of Neville, particularly the "two houses alike in dignity" parallel he draws between the Malfoys and the Longbottoms (in sharp contrast to the Weasleys).

Quoted to make the link work

This is a great essay. The parts about him surpressing his magic abilities and how McGonagall and Snape react is really interesting.

Thanks!

It linked properly when I previewed it, and I went back into edit three or four times, but it wasn't letting me do what I wanted. That happens quite a bit to me, for some reason.

It won't let me link properly either so I normally just end up writing out the URL because that will automatically become a link, or if that is too long do what you did but inside of a quote in the post.
You're Welcome.

thanks for the essay. I'll read it tomorrow though because I need to go to bed. Most of the time, if it won't let you link, it'll do it if you put a color around it like
Blah blah

I liked that essay. A lot. I now have the urge to go back through all the books and look at Neville really closely to see how he evolved.

Um, just because I typed this all out Sunday night, and can cut-and-paste, and to put us back on topic, and vaguely following from your request:
Quote:
Harry was pleased to see that all of them, even Zacharias Smith, had been spurred to work harder than ever by the news of ten more Death Eaters on the loose, but in nobody was this improvement more pronounced than in Neville. The news of his parents' attacker's escape had wrought a strange and even slightly alarming change in him. He had not once mentioned his meeting with Harry, Ron, and Hermione on the closed ward in St. Mungo's, and taking their lead from him, they had kept quiet about it too. Nor had he said anything on the subject of Bellatrix and her fellow torturers' escape; in fact, he barely spoke during D.A. meetings anymore, but worked relentlessly on every new jinx and countercurse Harry taught them, his plump face screwed up in concentration, apparently indifferent to injuries or accidents, working harder than anyone else in the room. He was improving so fast it was quite unnerving and when Harry taught them the Shield Charm, a means of deflecting minor jinxes so that they rebounded upon the attacker, only Hermione mastered the charm faster than Neville.

Yeah, a week ago, I was skimming through all the parts in OotP for Neville parts because I was looking for something... I forget what though... but it wasn't Neville relate... oh wait, yes it was. I was looking to see if he ever conjoured a patronus, which he never did.

Harry says to him "You've got to think of something happy," and Neville responds miserably and sweating with his efforts "I'm trying."

That made me sad that he hasn't got much to be happy for. He's got a miserable home life if you think about it. His family doesn't act very proud of him, and spent most of his childhood trying to frighten the magic out of him.

But as I was saying, I think his patronus might be a woodpecker because it symbolizes prophecy, magic, power, guardian of trees, and it heralds rain and storms.

Obviously, the prophecy could have referred to him, he's magical, he's got a lot of power that he has finally learned how to use, he's great in herbology, and england, especially northern england where it is presumed he lives is very rainy.

Here's some other's I saw that I liked for him, but woodpecker fit him best.

Buffalo - Sacredness, life builder. The buffalo provides all good things for living, and bestows great curing powers.

Frog - Power of water, sensitivity, medicine, hidden beauty, power.

Spider - Creative, pattern of life, connects the past with the future, creating possibilities.

I just searched for animals and their symbolism and meanings and got a good thing that had a bunch of things like that.

IDLE THOUGHT: I wonder if it really IS a spider, whether Ron will consent to go near him ever again? I mean, that means that a spider would make him happy...
