The Triwizard Tournament
The Triwizard Tournament is a famous competition between the schools of Hogwarts, Durmstrang, and Buexbatons. It was created some 700 years ago as a freindly competion between the three. Each school took turns hosting the Tournament, which took place every five years. The judges for the tournament included the headmasters/headmistresses of the schools and the Heads of the Department of Magical Games and the Department for Magical Cooperation.
The Triwizard Tournament consists of a series of tasks designed to test the champions in different ways; magical prowress, daring, deduction, and ability to cope with danger.
The contstes were extremely dangerous. In 1782, a cockatrice the champions were supposed to capture went on a rampage and the judges were hurt. As the deathtoll mounted, the contests ceased. Albus Dumbledore, a Headmaster at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, saw the tournament as a way to reach out to other schools, and a tournament was held. Though no one died, it ended with He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named(Lord Voldemort) returning from the dead. The tournament has not been played since.
Quidditch
Quidditch is played on broomsticks up in the air. There are three goal posts at either end of the feild. The feild is called a Quidditch Pitch. There are three kinds of balls in Quidditch. The ball that normally scores the most points is the quaffle. The quaffle is a large red ball that the three chasers of the team throw around to each other and try to get it in the goal posts, which earns the team 10 points. The keepers defend the hoops. The next ball down is called the Bludger. The two medium-sized brownish-black balls come pelting around the feild, trying to knock players off their brooms. The two beaters on each team protect their team from bludgers, while knocking them back at the other team. The smallest ball, about the size of a walnut, is the golden snitch. The seeker on each team races around the feild trying to catch it, because the golden snitch earns the catcher's team 150 points and ends the game.
