Howl's Moving Castle is a young adult fantasy novel by British author Diana Wynne Jones. A sequel, Castle in the Air, was published in 1990. A second sequel, House of Many Ways was released in June 2008. Here's a synopsis of Howl's Moving Castle in case anyone hasn't read it. Quote: In the land of Ingary, such things as spells, invisible cloaks, and seven-league boots were everyday things. The Witch of the Waste was another matter. After fifty years of quiet, it was rumored that the Witch was about to terrorize the country again. So when a moving black castle, blowing dark smoke from its four thin turrets, appeared on the horizon, everyone thought it was the Witch. The castle, however, belonged to Wizard Howl, who, it was said, liked to suck the souls of young girls. The Hatter sisters—Sophie, Lettie, and Martha—and all the other girls were warned not to venture into the streets alone. But that was only the beginning. In this giant jigsaw puzzle of a fantasy, people and things are never quite what they seem. Diana Wynne Jones's entrancing fantasy is filled with surprises at every turn. Now though these are sequel's to each other, they each have their own main characters, though others return in minor roles at times. I read Howl's Moving Castle before the movie came out. What did you guys think? Did you prefer the book Howl to the movie version? I did. Howl was more gritty in the book and less sweetheart-ish as he is in the movie.

I love the book. Howl was quite the character. However, I haven't seen the movie. I think I'm worried it might ruin things for me if it's much different.

~My Personal Masquerade~ I haven't read the book yet but it's on my list. I'm going to watch the movie after I read the book. Some of my friends really love the movie but they refuse to read the book o_O not sure why though. their loss! lol some people just want to keep the anime idolized version of him in their head. really i don't mind either version. the character in the anime is semi close to him in the book. i mean their both narcissistic and like a preening bird (at moments in the movie) but it's a bit more heavy in the book which is really funny when he's faced against Sophie. i like both versions, but i'm more of a book Howl lover. but definitely watch the movie after you've read the book. i'd check out the next to in the series. their really stand alone truthfully, but their still best read in order, though like i said each book has their own main characters, not always the same, but Howl and Sophie do return in them at one point or another. i still haven't read: Castle in the Air, but I've read the 3rd one. xp

I loved both book and movie. The movie was so loosely based on the book that I don't really consider them comparable.

I will pick this one up since I never knew it was a book and it is one of my favorite anime movies, right after Spirited Away.

I made the bad choice and saw the movie before reading the book. I don't even really remember much of the book, except that I read it quickly and that I don't recall enjoying it. However, I might pick it back up again, now that I've given it some time.

It was so strikingly different from the Miyazaki film that I was pleasantly surprised.

I nabbed the book from the library. I didn't know Howl's Moving Castle even was a book! I thought it was written by the guy who did the movie. Now I'm going to go see if Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away are books. I'll giggle with giddy if they are. We should make a thread for the books turned into movies by Hayao Miyazaki if those two also turn out to be books.
EDIT: I did a quick Wikipedia search and Hayao Miyazaki writes mostly his own stories for his big movies, except for Howl's Moving Castle. So Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away are stories by Hayao Miyazaki and not adaptions.

Rune Wynn I think Howl's the only book that he did a movie loosely based on. lol really loosely based that is. XD The only other major movie he's done that is based off a book is Kiki's Delivery Service. He's done a lot of lesser known movies that I've never seen, so I don't know what those are based on.
