Alright, if you don't know Dave Salmoni is your input isn't really going to help me, but feel free to join in. AND for those of you lucky little boys and girls who DON'T know who he is, I will give you this little bit o' biography on him:

"He has hosted and/or produced several TV documentaries, including Living with Tigers (2003), which describes the progress he and John Varty made as part of the Bengal Tiger rewilding Project, and Into The Lion's Den (2005) and Sharks: Are They Hunting Us?, both for Discovery Channel. He starred in the show Animal Face-Off as a host and expert. Salmoni is a host of several Animal Planet and Discovery Channel programs such as Rogue Nature, Predator vs. Prey, Into the Lion's Den, and After the Attack, which are series he not only hosts but also produces. He currently hosts and produces the Discovery Channel show Rogue Nature and After the Attack on Animal Planet."

BUT!!! Here is my dilema... I believe there should be no captivity for wild animals. (Granted sanctuaries, real ones, are great places for those animals who cannot be reintroduced.) These creatures shouldn't be trained for entertainment and such. So here is my problem with Mr.Sal-friggen'-moni, he is all for wild animals(calling himself a conservationist), but he is also a captive animal trainer. I've been trying to open my heart to the man, but I cannot get past the fact that he is a supposed naturalist and conservationist even though he supports the major industries that exploit those animals he loves.

Now, here is where the discussion begins. How do you personally feel about him and what he does? Do you support him? And is there anything you could do to make me enjoy the man? :]

It is very haunting. I don't believe in animals in captivity. I believe that all animals should be free. 3nodding heart

I support him. I don't support everything he says, but I think in general he does more good than harm. Anyone/anything who promotes animal welfare/conservation topics is good thing, and his shows reach millions.

Frankly, wild animals are going to be kept in captivity in the foreseeable future. Man has done this since he first started snatching wolf pups and bringing them back to the cave. (I'm not saying this is a good or bad thing, it just IS.)

To condemn him for accepting this fact and working with the captive animals... well, to me it's frankly splitting hairs.

I don't think he encourages people to have pet lions/tigers. In fact, I think he's specifically stated it's a VERY bad idea - and you're better off by far with a domestic cat or dog.

As for the "attack animal" shows... again, you can't blame one person for society's fascination with that topic. Indeed, it is hard to discuss large predators at all without that coming up. If that's what people want to hear about, what gets them to turn to the show - well, then take advantage of it, and while they're watching slip in some environmental conservation messages!

I think all of the time spent training and using animals for entertainment should be converted into spending money and time developing real conservation efforts.

That's kinda mixed subject, honestly. Kinda touchy. I believe him to be doing a lot more good than harm, even with the captive animals that he's training for entertainment.

I mean... looking at it from the captive animals perspective. Not often do they have the best of environments, nor stimulation. And since they're captive and practically tame anyway, why not give them the same stimulation you'd give a rambunctious dog? Teach them to jump, catch, fetch, dance. Stimulate them, get their brain working, their bodies working, burn that energy that NEEDS to be burned every day.

I DON'T agree with a lot of the training methods a lot of companies use for captive animals, but I don't think he resorts to those types of methods. So, like I said, I believe he's doing more good than harm. And I doubt he abuses the animals he trains, in anyway.

What kind of support does he need?

You know there are much more people who are vegetarians as well as loving animals AND do animal shows which educate others to love and treat animals in right ways.
