I've been contemplating reading an Anne Rice novel for a while, but I just don't know whether or not I would enjoy the books.
I'm currently reading the Southern Vampire Mysteries series by Charlaine Harris (also known as TrueBlood), and I am thoroughly enjoying it.
Would anyone recommend that I read Anne Rice, and if so, which book do you think I should start with?

Yes! Undoubtedly, unabashedly yes! I started reading Anne Rice when I was 9. I have read all of her Vampire books, and all of her Lives of the Mayfair Witches books. Mainly because those end up crossing story lines.
I would recommend starting with The Witching Hour, reading Lasher, then Taltos, and working through Interview with a Vampire and on from there. The first three are the Witches books, and I read them first, myself.
I've fallen deeply in love with all of the characters Anne Rice has created in her Witches and Vampire books. From Armand to Lestat to Michael, Mona, and Rowan. She paints a beautiful picture with her words, and I do recommend checking her work out.

I would definitely suggest you dive into the world of Ann Rice. However I think it best you not read any of her more recent books about the life of Jesus... Her older writing was far superior.

Then when I have finished the books I have to read, I will take your advice and read in that order 3nodding I was in my book store today and I looked at Interview with a Vampire, and very nearly bought it. However, I have the Southern Vampire mysteries to finish and other books. I should be able to start on Anne Rice next month, I think 3nodding

I personally am not a fan of her works. (Not just because I'm prejudice against vampires, she has written other books.) I really did not enjoy her re-telling of the sleeping beauty myth (forgot the title). She took an old and moderately innocent children's story and turned it into p0rn. I, personally, did not like that.

I borrowed Pandora from the library, but haven't started it yet. She wrote the books that the movie Queen of the Damned is based off of, so she's probably not too bad. I actually want to read her adaption of Jesus's story.

go for it. i'm not a big fan of her work but i enjoyed the last two books from the vampire chronicles. that's a series you'll want to start from beginning to end because otherwise some characters would be completely lost on you. Blood Canticle was my favorite truth be told. it's the last book too. lol

I have tried several times, but I cannot get into Anne Rice's books. I guess I just don't care for her style.

I just bought a second hand copy of The Witching Hour off eBay, so should be coming soon. I went into my local library today to try and find it, but the only Anne Rice book they had was Violin. >< My library is rubbish.

Anne Rice is amazing. I'm close to having read all of her novels, save for the erotica and ones about Jesus. Those are not my thing. ^^;
You're lucky, Vogue. Violin is the only one of her books my library doesn't have. D: Too bad we can't make our libraries trade books for a few weeks. xD

My library has a system called Interlibrary Loan, where we lend and receive books and other media from libraries around the country. If there's something you really want, but isn't available in your library system, you might want to ask if they participate in ILL. As for Anne Rice, I loved her work as a kid and tween. I wholly believe that the Vampire Chronicles shaped who I am today. However, going back and trying to re-read the books I once loved has been an utter disappoint. I can't stand her style of writing now. I suggest just reading a page of one of her books. They're all written in the same style, so if you like a little, you'll love the rest. If you can't get through the page, don't bother trying.

I can't ask about the libraries by the way... I live in England razz

I read one of her books and really didn't rate it - I read Interview With A Vampire and found it impossible to like practically any of the characters - I thought they were a very whiny, sniveling bunch of cliches, and her writing style was nothing special. I can't say anything I've heard or read about her other books has made me think that they'll be any better. <_<

I've tried to read her books but never could get into them. I enjoyed the movies much better.
