Basically this is a topic to discuss and talk about anything related to your altars or shrines or what have you. It can be from construction, to cleansing, to what they should contain, to if they should be permanent and what have you. So yeah. Altar topic!

Question 3: What purpose does your altar serve?
PostPosted: Mon Sep 07, 2009 1:33 pm

My path require shrines but I haven't got the room for them so I'm gonna make one small one instead.

An altar isn't necessary but I like having one around. smile

Correct me if I'm wrong...

a shrine is a dedication to something or someone....

an altar is a place of working (be it magick, rituals, etc.)

I have an ancestral shrine that I use as well as my altar.

Now is there a specific reason for having your altars set up a specific way?

Yea, a shrine is dedicated to a particular entity. Whereas, an altar is the place where you do your magical work.

If I have my altar up then I set it up in alignment with the current season. Unless I've got a theme I want to follow up on. Like, today I'm tidying it up and giving it a beach theme because I recently visited my Irish family and one of out traditions is to go to this really quiet but beautiful beach.
So I'm putting out the bits and pieces I collected to honour my ancestry.

I have my ancestral shrine back up and I'm happy about that. I feel better seeing my ancestral shrine. I'm just not sure what sort of offerings to use.

The only thing prescribed is changing the decor for the seasons. Other than that, it's whatever is around or what looks good or will fit. I do what's practical, for the most part. It's not like I'm following someone else's tradition, so I can do what I want with it.

I understand the functional distinction people are making between a shrine and altar, but to me, there isn't a hard distinction between the two. After all, many put icons of one sort or another on their altars which are dedicated to aspects important to their path. Seems to me the line could get quite blurry in places; gosh knows my own is dedicated as a shrine to the divine and is also a place where I honor them or do "work" as is put by some.

Oh. I just realized something.
We're moving to a place that's almost 3x as big as this apartment. One of my excuses for not having an altar is that I have no room for one.
Yaaaaay.

...what goes on an altar if you don't worship anyone?

God representations don't go on my altar, instead I put important sentiments, seasonal representations, half-completed projects and tools on mine smile

Bowl for offerings for spirits or deities (your choice), elemental symbols, candles, seasonal symbols. What do you want to have on it? What are you going to be using it for?

Rituals I suppose. I would like to be able to do those more often.
