I had a bad experience with a green horse where I nearly feel off when she started an out of control canter. I used to sit back and stay deep in the saddle, but now I fall forward alot, which makes the horse sometimes go even faster. I also tense up which doesnt help.

Do you have any tips to help me get over my shyness? I am looking at a horse who is 5yrs old, and is nearly perfect.. and my dad wont buy him unless I can canter with him normally(which I agree with).

Thanks!

I would suggest riding a bomb proof horse who will just canter around the ring at a slow pace no mater what for a while. I had some bad experiences with young horses as well and after I got supper tense when going to jumps. I leased a horse who was as well behaved as one could ask for and eventually he helped me get over my fear because he wouldn't speed up towards jumps if I tensed up. Sadly it's not an issue that can be fixed over night. It will take time to build up your courage again. Hope this helped smile

If could be a variety of reasons...
If it's a horse you haven't ridden before it might just be a gait that is very different from what you're used too, or a saddle you're not used too.

With my experiences, I'd say check your saddle fit. Poor fitting saddles can throw you forward and so can ill leg position so have someone make sure everything is fitting properly if you're not sure.

If that seems ok, I'd try no stirrups. Riding without stirrups even at a walk can DRASTICALLY improve balance and your seat. Work on stretching down as far as you can for a while and when you pick up your stirrups again, you'll feel like you have lengthened and when you sit, you'll be much more secure. Working on your seat and sitting tall and straight can be good for your back too. Put a crop against your back and make sure it touches everywhere and keep it there while you stretch your legs. You'll grown a few inches I swear.

If you feel like your nervous, get someone to lunge you while you canter. This will help you feel like your a little more safe while you get the hang of it again and you wont have to worry about speed or steering and just worry about your seat and how you feel. 3nodding

I would try and ride bareback at the walk and maybe trot. This worked for me because after riding bareback at the walk and trot, riding with a saddle felt super secure. If you can't do that, because of barn rules and such, stop riding horses that scare you immediatly. If you're scared, you'll be tense. And if you're tense, you'll make your horse nervous and a green horse does NOT need to be nervous, or running off! Start by cantering for only a few strides, and maybe stay on the flat until you feel a little better? Maybe in a round-pen where the horse can't run off with you? If you aren't confident when you ride, it'll be less fun and that's the real shame.

Oh, and an old trainer of mine made me bring 2 or 3 twenty dollar bills to my lessons and made me sit on about half of one at a time and if my butt came out of the saddle, the money would fly onto the ground, and it'd be hers. A little extra motivation, eh? xd
