Everyone has a different thing that they find particularly hard to write. It could be dialogue, humor, action, anything. What's yours?

Dialogues. gonk

I avoid them like the plague. I'm a bit of a lone wolf in real life, so I suck at coming up with things for me to say in a social situation, much less other characters with different personalities...!!

The trick with dialogue is to write it as if someone was actually speaking it. Spend some time just listen to people talk, you don't have to say anything, just listen and watch. Focus on how they talk rather than what they say. Pitch, tone, body language too... once you get comfortable with that then move on to what their saying. Do they talk in full words "cannot" "want to" or in quick short sentences "can't" "wanna." Stuff like that.

You could also watch "reality tv" as that's about as close to real life conversation as you can get with tv hehe (soap operas are at the other end of the spectrum whee ) But really, just find someone who you think could represent your character and see how they talk and then use it. Dialogue is ten times easier when you remember that, in writing it, you get to throw grammar and spelling out the window hehe Really, no one I know talks in complete, well-structured sentences. Their not going to say "Sarah, would you like to go to the store with me?" No, their going to say "Hey Sarah! Wanna go to the store?" It makes the dialogue more real and I loathe beta's and reviews who tell me I made a grammar/spelling mistake in dialogue... life is not perfect, talking even less so.

Anyways... rofl rofl

For me action is hard. I can see it clearly in my mind but I can't get it down on paper with the right words. I can get the idea down but the "power" or whatever that's supposed to be there isn't and so its more like I am telling the reader which is bad razz

Thanks for the advice! I dream of a day where I won't have to rely on scene breaks and chapter endings, lol. I think action is one of my strongest points, so let's see if I can return the favour...

When you're writing action, you can't think of it like it's a scene in a movie. In a movie, all the jumps and flips and moves and kicks look great because they happen so fast and fluidly. They take you from one place to another and you're not even sure how you got there. Before your mind can finish registering that the hero knocked down the door, you're already worried about the villain who was hiding behind it and is now shooting off round after round at the good guys. That system doesn't work in writing, because reading a sentence takes a lot longer than watching a picture.

So, don't try to describe everything that happens. Save that for the climax and the really big events (the different treatment of details can help make them seem bigger and more powerful too - in kind of the same way as slow motion in a movie). When the blood's pumping and the adrenaline flowing, instincts tend to take over - you react without thinking, so no one can tell you exactly what they did step by step anyway.

What you really need to focus on is the psycological aspect. Was that hit stronger than expected, was the enemy's defense failing because he was tiring, did the hero feel like he'd never win unless he took a gamble? It doesn't matter if the hero took two steps back and leaned to the side to regain balance - it matters that he was so surprised by the other guy's move that he had to pull away to put his wits together.

Eh... Don't know if that helps much, but I tried. ^^'

Yeah Pad's that does help a little hehe and what is it about fluff and humor that you have trouble with Dream? Generally humor is best when it just flows out and there is no planning to it. Fluff on the other hand I hate so I can't really help with that haha

OK I always map out my story by the big events, my trouble is writing normal day things that happen in between the events. Not quite sure that makes sense...

Horror and death. I'm better with humor. But I'm in the process of writing a Halloween special. It's hard. gonk
