When creating a character, I always ALWAYS make a character profile if any information I have on them. Its never complete of course until the end of the story as I adjust and add things to it as I go. Its not a solid thing that says "the character must turn out this way" but rather a liquid "here's the generally idea" sort of thing. I find it to be very helpful.

S M I L E ...

When creating a character, I always do what I call a basic sketch of them first. Name, gender, race (one in a while), age, hair color, eye color, clothing, personality, and, if I really want to get detailed, hobbies and etc. Once I have that done, I move on to family members, and the rest of the information depends on what fandom the character is for. For example, if I was doing a Naruto character, I would have village, clan (if one), rank, squad, etc. If it were Pokemon, then I would have Pokemon (I bet you would have never guessed) and if they're a Pokemorph or not.

O___O Wow, I seriously typed all of that?

...it's deceiving.

You two are very organised.

For the first time, I'm trying to make a profile for an OC in hopes of making a character with greater depth. Listing his backstory, personality traits, quirks, people he knows and how he relates to them... stuff like that. It's not working very well... I'm confusing the hell out of myself with all the possibilities that are emerging, lol. ^^'

My old method was to define only the OC's general looks, motivation and the biggest "why" behind that motivation. I let the plot decide all the other details, in a "wouldn't it be ironic if..." kind of way.

I could never let the plot decide major details, but little ones are fine. Like deciding what their favorite color is or something silly like that, but not something like their biggest hobbies and such. I think having the major stuff down, a broad and yet specific skeleton of a character, and then using whatever happens in the plot to fill in little details is the best way to cut down on confusion. Wouldn't want to start off with a broad "looks, basic personality, motive" profile and then get to the end and find you've made a completely different character lol
