I love canon. Characters are the reason why I write fanfics, but I think that if you take them away from their environment you're also taking away a large part of what makes them who they are. Naruto as the son of a large multinational corporation manager? Harry Potter discovering that he had an angel as an ancestor and suddenly growing wings? I'm sure that there are writers out there good enough to make it work, but this simply doesn't appeal to me much.
Plus, I like to see how crafty people are at tweaking canon without breaking it. razz

I prefer canon as well. Yes, it is nice to see some other stories that don't relate to what happened in the actual plot or just some random storyline that the author made up, but most of the AU fics I see are either crossovers (such as Naruto in the Harry Potter world) or high school romance. However...there are some AU fics I can tolerate. I say if the author can pull it off, do it.
As for IC and OOC, I honestly prefer OOC. First of all...some humor fics that I've seen and written would lose its humor if you had the characters...well...in character. Plus, for most of my fics, I like to tweak the characters' personalities. It's just a thing of mine. Look, why do we write fanfiction? To have fun and practice, right? ...Mostly to have fun. >D For some, fun is making characters OOC and causing chaos. Hey, that's fine with me. There are some people who can pull off that kinda stunt, and some people who can't. If you can, do it. Give us a good laugh. With the world we live in nowadays, there has to be some humor...some...getaway from it all.

I like canon way more than I like AU but I dislike anyone who is so strictly canon that they can't even allow one drop of AU. If I wanted that strict of canon I would have just stuck to the books lol
Anyways, I like canon and AU that can mix together seamlessly. Like it could be seen as part of the canon even though it goes off on its own. If someone can write a story about Harry having wings and making it all canon in the end then I am fine with it lol but yes if its just completely AU then I will probably pass.
I think the same way about IC vs. OOC but in some ways I like OOC more because in the canon stories sometimes I feel, as a psych grad, that there is so much more to the characters that wasn't even addressed. Again that brings up the people who are so stuck on canon that they can't allow any changes. I mean Harry goes from child in awe to brooding teen to father figure... sorry but I don't feel those three things are the only aspects of his personality he has.
