If any of you have watched it, keep a close eye on Aang. You'll find that the Air Tribe were Buddhists! Now, of course they don't say it outright, but if you listen to the things they did and the things Aang practices, you'll definitely piece it to Buddhism!
Sorry, just thought that was an awesome finding after watching 4 episodes today.

You'll also notice that the Avatar is very similar to the Tibetan idea of a Tulku, such as HH the Dalai Lama! I find it very interesting! razz

I could tell by the way they played the color of his clothing into it. those are the same colors for monks of some buddhist sects. 3nodding

Yep, the Airbenders are blatantly based on Tibetan Buddhists. 3nodding Most of the concepts of the show, given the take from Chinese martial arts for the bending styles, are taken from various Asian cultures (aside from the Waterbenders, who are more Inuit than anything else). It's very cool. 3nodding

I noticed it, too! Gahhh, I love that show.
Though, in your poll, the terms aren't quite right. For instance, the Air nomads, being nomads, weren't really an organized "nation." Also, there isn't one Water nation - there are two Water tribes.
Not that it makes too much of a difference, the terminology just bothered me.

Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, Water Tribe(s, technically, if you want to get into the separation between northern and southern) and Air Nomads. 3nodding

Byaggha So I'm a cartoon fangirl at 29. Big deal. ninja lol. Nothing wrong with that. You're only as old as you feel/act. If you feel and act young, you'll always be young, and that is a great way to be.

I love Avatar the Last Airbender. actually, the buddhism base was intentional, and it is also based on chinese taoism. hence the yin yang.

Almost everything in that show is based of Asian cultures. 3nodding Of course, the Water Tribes are based of Inuit culture. I love how the creators, Mike and Brian, subtly added in religion into the show. Aang is a Buddhist, Uncle Iroh is a Taoist.
I love that showww~ heart

卍 The quieter you become, the more you can hear. I find it funny that I'm the only one so far that's voted for the Fire Nation. What can I say, I like flames (favorite character in Fullmetal Alchemist? Roy Mustang). That and they're essentially Japan in the Avatar universe... Iroh's my favorite character, by the way. May you attain enlightenment. 卍

I know this thread is rather old, but I just had to say that Avatar: The Last Airbender is my absolute favorite television show ever. I have seen every episode, and I have to say that it is just the perfect show. It carries so much emotional power, but it's so balanced with humor, you don't even notice how much you come to adore some of the characters. I. Love. Avatar. -Ibs P.S.: Air Nomads FTW!

Haha, I've already done a thread on this topic, but this one is much more popular. :3 I LOVE Avatar: The Last Airbender. I saw the movie and I think M. Night did an alright job for his first time doing a fantasy movie. ^_^ I'm looking forward to the second one and looking forward to some improvement.
I'm also looking forward to Avatar: The Legend of Korra, coming out next year! biggrin SO excited!!
If I were in the Avatar world, I would definitely be with the Air Nomads. I love their practices and teachings and I absolutely LOVE how they are based on Tibetan Buddhist monks/nuns.
Did you guys hear that in The Legend of Korra, Aang's son is an airbender named Tenzin that is supposed to teach Avatar Korra airbending? I totally knew his child would have a Tibetan name of some sort. xd

I just finished the final book two days ago with my friends & it was awesome! I just wish that the Zuko/Azula fight would've ended without Kataara's help... I'm just sayin'.
All hail Fire Lord Azula!
