Alright, I saw a great question else where online which leads me to ask this question.

How do you go about finding bunkai out of your kata (the applications)

For me I start by first learning the movements, and the obvious techniques of the kata (the punches, kicks, blocks shown) then i imagine what other ways i would be able to do each technique to some one in different situations, and then i do the techniques with minor changes to hand and foot position, directional changes, and mostly, just find a partner, and play around with the techniques until you get something that works, well, and could work well in real life.

I once had some one tell me that each step in my kata, can also be read as a sweep.

Beautiful thing about Kenpo is that the majority of our katas were created using our self-defense techniques. Just in case nobody knows anything about Kenpo, it is a self-defense based art. How it differs from other arts that state they are self-defense based is that each belt consists of 30 self-defense techniques plus an additional 15-40 variations. We tend to focus strictly on self-defense and fighting skills and less on competition-style fighting. Our katas consist of those techniques, so, instead of us wasting time dissecting techniques from the kata, we use the kata to refine our techniques. We then use these techniques and incorporate them into Thai Boxing. It's an interesting blend.

i won't lie, i'm slightly bothered that you'd say it's a waste of time to dissect kata.

kata has all the techniques in it, it's the text book you study from.
is it a waste to read a book just because you already know the words and the meanings of the words in the book?

that reminds me of a great quote i heard. "kata is like a book, if you do not understand the book is it the book's fault?"

don't you think it's interesting when there are hidden moves in kata? moves that you don't know exactly what it is........until you learn the kata yourself? Such as Wansu.

i do, that's part of the history of my style.
the okinawans weren't allowed to train any martial arts, so when they trained, they did so at night and created kata to look like a dance and hide their technique.

it takes a bit of thinking outside of the box, but kata dissection is great, and most of the time you won't be thinking about what you're doing in a fight, so you'll be relying on muscle memory, which doing kata over and over again is going to build.
