I'm speaking my mind so nobody get all mad at me. I am a proud furry and have been for probably a year or more now. I have been a furry on the inside ever since I was born. Ever since I was in elementary, I role played with one of my friends and I would be a feline furry and she would be a wolf. Ever since then, I have tried to figure out what this could be, and I then found "furries." That's when I realized that I am one. After talking to other furries, I began to grow with the furry community and learn how others are and act. Now, I act and am one 100%. I may not act like other furries you know, but I am one. My fursona (I only have one, because it relates to me, and I like to think of it as me. I hate when people create multiple fursonas) is actually unique rather then some people's. It is a Snow Leopard, light grey fur with white circles that go around the upper arms, legs, and one on neck. Those circles are white, and the tip of the tail is white. His name is Kyobe Kutanaga. As for height, weight, personality, etc, they are all of my own.
What makes me mad are those people who think they are furries, but really aren't. They just have no one else to fit in with and found out about furries, and try to fit in with them. For example, an easy way to spot one.. "Oh ya, my furry is a cat." First off, 'my furry'? Really? It's called a fursona. Second, a cat? Really? Oh wow, that's cool. I'm jealous now. I wish I was a 'cat'. Seriously, I hate the people who say stuff like that to fit in and act like a furry, but fail miserably and aren't even a furry at all. They just like the fact that people who are anthropomorphic seem cool, and many people also like them, so they just think they belong. Guh..
Also, those who just.. guh, you know what? I give up. I give up on talking and talking about these followers that are just plain annoying and an insult to furries. They think they belong, but that's just because they have no friends in real life and need somewhere to belong to feel good about themself.
For you TRUE furries, you should not be offended by this because you should understand. If not, you have some things to think about if you actually think you're a furry.
If you know you're just a fake, please at least act like a furry and be specific about stuff and stop being such a pest.
Real furries = mrgreen Fake furries = evil
P.s. Normally I'd like to add a poll to see who agrees or not, but most people get offended because I'm 'going off' on people who 'are furries' when I really am not. I did not ask the question in the poll because most people who all say they are a furry, which all aren't, meaning the poll is pointless. Also, because people get offended and want to go against me so they just say they are a furry anyways.. *sigh*

I agree. I mean, when people see my fursona they probably think 'Ugh, not another fox, but really i've been in the furry community for over a year, actually had my fursona in my mind since 4 years ago, and ever since I was little I used to pretend I was a fox etc. I thought mine through too, which is what a lot of those 'fake furries' don't do. I also only have one fursona, and i've never once changed my totem animal.
Now I wait for the tl; dr razz

Yeah. I've been an actual "furry" for just over a year. I, like you, have always had a thing for them, enjoyed acting as them, etc. I also hate fake furries. o_o And you can tell who they are, too! My fursona is a bird, has been ever since the start. 3nodding

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= I've been fortunate enough not to meet someone who referred to their fursona as "their furry". Though that would be quite amusing. Not necessarily due to the fact that it is a little insulting that they're trying to enter a culture they know nothing about, but the fact that they would actually know so little as to utter something so silly sounding.
Actually, it's quite lonely where I dwell. Unless my friend comes to visit, it truly seems like I'm the only Fur in my immediate area. Though I'm not certain of that. I've heard of possibly two other Furs who attend the same college as I.
However, I don't think this "fake"ness is subject only to us Furries. I've often been interrupted by someone who suddenly knew everything about Final Fantasy VII. After they mentioned their knowledge of the sphere grid and Squall, I always face-palmed on the inside. And sometimes on the out. Or they thought they knew everything because, and I quote, "I played Kingdom Hearts." Whoop-dee-doo.
While I do understand where Kyobe is coming from, I do believe that once these types find the "next thing to fit into", they'll no longer be an issue, just like in every culture.
There will always be people like this. Kinda like the emo kids who say they're Gothic. That's injustice to Goths everywhere. =/

I honestly don't see an issue with these, quote, "Overused Fursonas". If you like the idea of your fursona being a fox or wolf, you shouldn't change your thoughts "just because someone else already is".
I feel that even though you might be the same species as someone else, that does not in any way make you identical to them. For it is not what you look like, it is your inner self that sets you apart from the others.

I'm against 'fake furries' too. I've always played with my sister and brother, pretending we were, like, snow leopards and horses and stuff (anthro versions, not 100% animalistic) and until a couple years ago, I didn't even know anyone else who shared these interests exhisted. And now knowing that there are people who say they are furries, but only act like it, it kinda feels like an insult to my whole life. Interesting story. To some of these people saying they've only had one fursona (species-wise), I cannot say that. I always used to be a snow leopard, then I found that being a bird suited me more (not going to go into specifics on that one), and now I've discovered that I am a husky. If you want to read into my fursona, you can find the whole description on my blog at: http://furnation.com/index.php?automodule=blog&req=showblog&blogid=539&st=0its all the way at the bottom, so go there unless you want to read everything else smile

Changing your fursona is a bit more understandable. Sometimes, we as people change often, learning more about ourselves in the process. It's only natural for our Fursonas to change with us.
People with multiple fursonas bother me. Unless they have multiple personality disorder, I find it a bit odd for someone to have more than one.
As a counterpoint to Kyobe, not all of these people are "fake furs". Some of them might really have an interest in the fandom, and are just starting out. Instead of bashing them and alienating them, we should be helping them understand what being a Furry is all about.
Everyone starts somewhere. =3 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

I think of myself as a furry. I love anthromorphic characters and I love animals. Foxes are my favorite and always have been since I was real little. My character Waffle is pretty much my inner self. Inside I feel like a child that likes to have fun and play around but outside I am well mannered and mature. So I may not dress up as a furry or RP or anything like that but I love cute animals and sometimes wish I was one. So I'm not 100% sure what the exact definition of a furry is but I believe I am one. Some clarification would be nice too. Thankies!

I don't believe there's a check list you must complete or an application you have to submit to be a Furry.
I believe the golden rule is, "You aren't a Furry until you say otherwise." =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
