And I'm gonna get there one way or another.
The problem is my parents. I'd really like to get a tattoo to have that experience. (What's a tattoo artist without tattoos?) But my mom's really old school. She let me get microdermals so I wouldn't bother her about a nose piercing. I'm not even sure how she's going to react to me wanting to become a tattoo artist. My dad calls it voodoo jokingly, because he just thinks it's ridiculous.
Any tattoo artists/piercers ever have a similar problem? What are your thoughts?
I'm not asking for help, only sharing.

If your over 18, what your parents say doesnt really matter job wise. However if you are not, then you may as well take the time until then to build up a nice portfolio of art. NOT home done tattoos. My parents hate the fact that I support myself with tattooing, and rub it in when tattooing doesnt pay the bills and I have to call and ask for a loan. Prepair to be poor............and hope your not, but be prepaired!

No, I'm not over 18. That's why my parents are in the way.
I'm in AP Studio Art in high school now and going to college for Graphic Design, so I'll have plenty of time to build a portfolio. I would never give myself a home done tattoo.
I'm not really worried about my pay. I want a job that'll make me happy, not make me regret my life. I can live my life with frugal thoughts.
I just hope my parents aren't like that.

Awesome, sounds like you got the right mind set, and your in school for the right start. Tattooing isnt like "normal" art, alot of great artists tattoo, but there are plenty more that just cant transisiton to PERMINENT art. Its a mind thing....I think you'll do fine. Just let your parents see you have school taken care of for the "back up" career! Really they just dont want you to be financially dependent on anyone because of a job choice! Show them you got that in the bag, and not all tattooers are bikers, druggy losers, or freaks.

If you have the art talent, you can actually make some great money (but that's not what tattooing is about). If you don't have the art skills (and I don't mean that you think you have them, I mean you ACTUALLY have them), you are going to be stuck doing flash in a crappy studio. It's getting pretty cutthroat out there, and you'll be competing with amazing artists- so be prepared!
My parents don't know I'm a tattooer yet. I plan on telling them after I gtfo of Ohio and away from them.... >.>
