All this talk about vampires lately makes me want to find more decent books with them in there So I'd love some recommendations. Here are the two I'd recommend. The first one is "Saints and Sinners", that name might be off. This book had a different spin on why vampires cannot stand sunlight, the cross, and etc. Spoiler The book said that the early Christians kidnapped all the vampires running around way back in the days of the early church and tortured the vampires and did some mind breaking to make them believe that the are allergic to all those things and that they can only morph in to bats.
The second one is the series Vampire Files by P N Elrod. The series takes you through the adventures of Fleming as he tries to cope with being a vampire and discover what he can do. His friend kind of forces him into becoming a private investigator/something close to it. It was fun and a nice change of pace seeing the human side vampires.

I am not sure what kind of vampire stories you like but here are some I've read:
"Blood" series by Tanya Huff - starting in 1991, these feature the vampire Henry Fitzroy, a b*****d son of Henry VIII, as well as the private investigator Vicki Nelson. There are other supernatural creatures, and the storylines could almost border on corny, but I think Tanya Huff does a very good job. These are the first vampire stories I read, and they are still my favorite.
Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton - Starting in 1994, I have only read the first 8, and I hear this series devolves into a lot of erotica later, but I like the ones I've read. These are some pretty dark books, with an extreme amount of violence, even for vampire/horror literature.
Southern Vampire series by Charlaine Harris - This one's gotten a lot of attention because of the TrueBlood show, but it began in 2001. I have read all nine books, and they have a unique tone for paranormals, almost simplistic, but becoming complex.
I Am Legend by Richard Matheson - This book from 1954 is different in that it develops a truly detailed scientific explanation for vampirism. While the story is interesting, I think Matheson's writing is uninspired. I've read a number of his short horror stories, and they were all better.
'Salem's Lot by Stephen King - His second novel, published in 1975. This might be my fvorite King book, and is a highly detailed horror story, as well as dealing with traditional-type vampires. These vampires are mentioned again in the later books of the Dark Tower series as well.
Dresden Files by Jim Butcher - These are not specifically about vampires, but one of the central storylines is a war between the wizards' White Council and the vampires. I like the three vampire courts, with distinctions between White, Red, and Black.
The Strain by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan - This is a recent book, and read more like a thriller with some horror mixed in. The "vampires" are unlike anything else I've read about. It's short on answers, though, since there are two more books forthcoming. It was an interesting take, but sadly I think this was just an attempt to cash in later with a mega-movie deal.

I don't really like vampires but I found "Bunicula" (if I spelled that right, its been a while) to be very entertaining. What's better than a vampiric bunny-rabbit that sucks the plasma out of vegetables?

I kind of agree on the Anita Blake ones though I haven't read any yet but, i want to. I like the Damali Richards Series. And a few good vampire books are from Richelle Mead the Vampire Academy novels. The One I recently Red is by Amelia Atwater Rhodes it is called The Den of Shadows Quartet. I thought it was pretty good. Oh and The Vampire Diaries by L.J. Smith. biggrin

What's better than a vampiric bunny-rabbit that sucks the plasma out of vegetables? Tee-hee~ that is a good book! I'm pretty sure that I still have Celery Stalks at Midnight packed away in a box somewhere. :3 I've really enjoyed most of Anne Rice's vampire novels, my favorite without a doubt being Pandora. It's actually not part of The Vampire Chronicles even though it does have it's own place in the timeline of the series. I feel that it could be considered a good stand-alone story for someone who may not be looking to start the entire Chronicles.

When you included 'Decent' in the title, was it really necessary to explicitly mention 'no twilight'? I'm enjoying 'Carpe Jugulum' by Terry Pratchett. It isn't a regular type of vampire novel, for sure, but it's funny and entertaining.
