It's something I wanted to do for a really long time, but it wasn't till today that I actually found the means to make it: An OA dating sim! Well, it's not really that serious... and I don't feel like figuring out how to make complicated statistic counters and stuff, so it's likely to be more of an interactive visual novel with different branches of possibilities in it depending on choices. Anyway... if you play this demo, I'd like to hear your feedback. it took much longer than you'd think. I made a test today, which introduces the main character (who you can name yourself) and another familiar face. If I have time to kill, I'll probably work some more on this. Ideally I want to include several characters, but keep in mind that if I do they will be extreme caricatures of themselves and not serious at all. If you're cool with that, I'll put them in. =) Demo downloads: PC/Windows version: www.yamiloo.com/game_pc.zip Mac Version: www.yamiloo.com/game_mac.zip sweatdrop

OKAY SO I PLAYED IT AND I TOTALLY DIED?
Some suggestions!!!
I play a lot of these types of games, they're huge in Japan, and when I was younger I modified my playstation so i could play Japanese games that were uber cool but didn't make a whole lot of sense to me.
And no, they weren't all dating sims! But I've played those too on newgrounds to kill time. Needless to say, I have some experience.
Love the premise of 'A day in Ohtori', but I don't know if the character should actually... be a physical main character, of it it should be done in First-Person-View to create the illusion like the actual PLAYER of the game is talking and navigating through the story.
Also, you can never have enough options! Reading is fun, but for every interaction totally have some different options to reply. They could all lead back to the same thing, with no points system, but its much more interactive to get the player involved by contributing replies.
Usually, if asked anything directly or something that has to do with an opinion, the player has the option to respond (usually anywhere from 2-4 options, depending on the question.) The main character speaks very minimally and vaguely, so that the player themselves can feel like they're part of the game.
Which might be a cool tactic! I recommend playing... .. er.. I'll send you the link later. it's nothing crazy, and there's a lot of blahblah in the beginning, but you'll get the idea. It's a flash game on newgrounds, and it's a dating sim, but I dont think I can link it through Gaia and dont want to try.
Either way, it's not the best, but play it for a while to get a feel for the options and flow of the story to see what I mean.
I can't find a video of Rival Schools Project Justice 2, which was about students in a school up against rival schools in the area... it was a cross between an RPG and a figher game. In Japan you create a student and attended one of the schools, interacting with the characters, taking tests, hanging out, falling in love, etc, and then when they would fight others you would fight with them in a capcom fighter-style match. But in Japan the emphasis of the game was 50/50 split between the "in school" mode (the story), and the fights outside of class (gameplay).
I'm digressing slightly, but the "school mode" was really well done and reminds me of your game, and something you might like to explore. I wish I had an example, but all the videos I found on youtube are of the NTSC version, where they cut that storymode out.

Yamino Tenshi Haha, thanks! xd Sofie isn't in the game (yet) but I had fun throwing together a couple sprites for her to use in the future: A mad Sofie appears! *Giggles* I think the game is coming along nicely. Maybe let people pick from a male or female student at the start. That way you have two paths to work on with lots of opinions.

Barentine I don't know if the character should actually... be a physical main character, of it it should be done in First-Person-View to create the illusion like the actual PLAYER of the game is talking and navigating through the story. I know, I was originally just going to have her talk for the introduction, but then I went ahead and made a bunch of these stupid sprites for her and I thought it would be a waste not to use them. sweatdrop I thought about that mode of gameplay, and I might still switch to that, but I think it's kind of fun to actually see the characters interacting. Barentine Also, you can never have enough options! Reading is fun, but for every interaction totally have some different options to reply. Believe me, the minute I figure out how to actually use options, I'll be putting them in. I didn't have time to dabble in the more complex coding yesterday afternoon, but I'm sure once I figure it out it won't be that hard. lol Barentine The main character speaks very minimally and vaguely, so that the player themselves can feel like they're part of the game. That's also partly because most of these games to make you feel like you're... er... actually dating a cartoon character. xd Again, I was going to do that at first, but "Mary-Sue" (as I've dubbed the player character) started to develop her own personality right off the bat. I kind of imagine her talking like Excel from Excel Saga. ACTUALLY... she looks just like the creepy lolita. O_OBarentine But in Japan the emphasis of the game was 50/50 split between the "in school" mode (the story), and the fights outside of class (gameplay). Holy crap, that sounds awesome. I know this game DOES support a separate dating sim engine, and also RPG style fights, but both of those seem a little too much work for me, haha. xd RPG Maker is another game-maker program that lends itself much better to oldschool sprite RPG games, and a super easy battle system. I've seen people make dating sims with that too. I'm not sure I want to have real battles in this anyway, though. If anything, the battle results would be due to your interactions with the duelists, not statistics. (How would you level up, anyway? lol) Dream, I'm sorry it didn't work for you, Ivy also had issues. I think Ivy is running on Vista, which hates pretty much everything. You mentioned using a really old computer, maybe that's part of the problem. cry

You mentioned using a really old computer, maybe that's part of the problem. cry I was on a really old computer while at my sister's. My computer is a brand new custom build running Windows XP (until Windows 7 is offiically released XD). And.. it worked today! I tried "Save link as", got the option to save the redirection link. No thanks. So, tried clicking on it another tab.. and got the option to save the game. Which I did. I haven't installed it yet, but I will. It sounds like a lot of fun! I've played Thousand Arms a bit (billed in its guidebook as the only dating game officially translated for the US) and really liked it. (OMG the minigames! Will this 4DiOA have mini games?) Dating and getting in good with the girls (male main characted) to level up spells and weapons was a definite departure from the other PS games I've played.

I revamped the game with 100% more interactivity! I figured out how to make choice menus, so now you can actually control the conversation (except with Charlie, she's pretty much got a one-track mind.) I also added a scene with Sofie that has several different outcomes depending on what responses you choose, so choose wisely! (Or don't.) So far the music room is the only one I've made a scene for. I'd like to put some more characters in for next time. biggrin Dream, you don't really have to install the game, just unzip the .zip file (you'll need something like winzip, a free program you can get here) and then double click the game file to open. wink You can download the updated version of the game here: PC/Windows: http://www.yamiloo.com/4OA/game_pc.zipMac: http://www.yamiloo.com/4OA/game_mac.zip

Did you tell Sofie you're from Germany?? XDD
P.S. No minigames, sadly. That takes a really detailed understanding of coding in python, which I do not have. If I were working on this with a team, with the intention to sell it, that would be different. Obviously I can't sell a game based on an actual series unless I changed all the names/graphics to be distinctly non-Utena. XD
But seeing as I'm blatantly ripping off their artwork/screencaps/music, there's no way I can even think of selling this, lol. It's more like practice for me in case I want to make a Sister Claire game with this engine in the future. XD

OKAY!
I finally played the game. XD It's very.. cute! Rec: When you comment about Charlie's lack of personal space, it would be funny if she could be gradually coming closer to the viewer. Until she's Sofie's size when you first see her playing the flute.
XD
Get the other rooms done! I want to see your take on my characters! XDDD *total selfishness*
