It was a beautiful day. Warmer than previous, many people and dragons were outside enjoying it while it lasted. It was also noon, so what you mainly see at the moment are dragons lounging on the Bowl ledges, or swimming in the lake, or playing in the snow. Tertiath was busy digging through the snow, trying to see what was underneath it all.
There had to be something under all this snow. It fell from the sky and covered everything. So what did it cover? What did the ground really look like? And she was oh, so determined to find out.
Tertiath was so absorbed by digging in the snow that she hardly noticed the others around her. And the fact that snow, lots of snow, was beginning to stick to her recently oiled, pear green hide.

N'mar was off running, enjoying the weather and taking the opportunity to do a few more laps around the weyr than he normally could. Alreth had dropped him off on the ground since the brown was planning to spend time sunbathing next to the lake. He stood watching his rider glide smoothly away to start his laps before strolling casually down to his favorite spot. He was not surprised to see another dragon there, it was a popular spot because of the good exposure it got, he was surprised, though, when he saw that the young green was digging in the snow with single-minded determination. He approached her without speaking, wondering what she was doing. Perhaps her human had lost something? He sat down on his haunches about fifty feet from her, a little puzzled now that she hadn't noticed him.
May I ask what you are doing? He inquired politely, keeping his voice soft in an attempt not to startle or anger her.

Even though there was still snow on the ground Sukarth considered taking a swim. The young bronze stretched out his wings, as he was was getting ready to step into the water. At that time he felt a cold lump of snow land on the outstretched wing, and looked in the direction of one of the hatchlings impatiently rooting around in the snow.
With a chuckle he bespoke the green Tertiath, your lump of cold snow has discouraged me from swimming. What are you looking for?

I'm digging. She said first to Alreth without looking up. Then looking only slightly up to see who else was speaking to her, she said to the bronze, The ground. She continued digging. Not even apologizing for the lump of snow that had landed on Sukarth. Respect was one thing that Minno was trying to teach her.
Tertiath kept digging and was beginning to tire now, since she had gotten to the part where the snow was hard-packed, due to dragons sunning themselves here.

Alreth stretched out so that he was lying full length on his stomach, amused now. Ahh, the simple pleasures of youth. Jekheth would like this one; he was fond of younglings.
My friend, you might want to see what one of the hatchlings is doing.
Jekheth, up on his weyrledge, stretched and yawned. M'leck was looking over some charts of the southern continent he was working on, totally absorbed.
What is she up to?
Trying to dig down to see the ground, apparently.
Jekheth gave a mental chuckle and spread his wings out, gliding slowly down to the lake. Ahh, I see. He landed and walked over to stand by Alreth, sending a polite greeting to Sukarth. Determined little one, isn't she?
Indeed.

Tertiath paused, just to rest a little bit. Poking her head out of the hole that she had just dug herself into, she looked at those around her and said rather plainly, I don't see how you find this amusing. You have seen the ground and I haven't. I wish to see the ground now, than wait for the snow to melt. And hello to you Jekheth.
Tertiath turned back to her digging, flinging one chunk of hard snow Alreth's way. Only for it to fall a few feet from where she was.

Alreth and Jekheth looked at one another, grinning slightly and still obviously amused.
Should we? She might not welcome the help. Alreth said, thinking of the snow chunk that Tertiath had attemtped to fling at him.
Why not, if it means so much to her?
As one the two adult dragons closed the distance between themselves and Tertiath, Alreth lowered his head down and peaked into the hole the green had dug.
If you've no objections, M'lady, we shall help you. You have hit an ice layer, it seems.

Sukarth returned Jekheth's greeting, and took a couple steps towards the green. The ground? Sukarth queried. It is brown, and hard. Much like the weyr. I much prefer the snow. It's soft.
Sukarth noticed that the two older dragons had made their way towards Tertiath, and seemed to be helping her dig. In his light baritone he asked Alreth, Why are you helping her dig to the ground. She will see it in a few months, once all of this delightful snow melts.
At that Sukarth bugled his disapproval of the green's flightiness, at wanting to see the ground.

Alreth looked up, now also mildly amused by Sukarth. It is polite to offer a lady assistance, Sukarth.
I'm just doing what he does, Jekheth said, feeling mellow enough not to crack any jokes at this particular moment. He reached down idly into the hole with one forepaw, dug his claws into the ice and pulled a huge chunk of it up. Frozen grass and dirt clung to the bottom, falling off in unattractive clumps as he lifted it.

Tertiath scratched at the ice. It was interesting. It was cold, hard, and she could see a blurred version of herself in it. Then a brown head blocked out some of the light. She considered Alreth's offer, and agreed. I have no objections. You may.
Leaping out of the hole, she shook off the snow that stuck to her hide. Turning to Sukarth she said, I prefer not to wait till the snow melts. I prefer to see it now. She stuck her head up in the air like she should get what she wants.
The sound of the ice cracking attracted her attention again. With wide eyes she watched as Jekheth brought up the chunk of ice. First she went to investigate the pieces of dirt that fell on the snow, then jumped back into her hole.
It smells different. And it feels much different from the snow. What are these yellow stringy things? She said, nosing the the dead grass and their roots.

That is grass, M'lady, Alreth said tolerantly as Jekheth continued to widen the hole, being more careful now to try and keep the grass in the ground.
In the warm weather it is green and soft, and it tickles. I like it. Jekheth said, nosing the grass himself. It is frozen and feels too prickly at the moment, though. Not at all comfortable.
Jekheth is a summer boy. All he wants to talk about is sunbathing and swimming, Alreth remarked, settling back down and making a wallow for himself. Personally, I agree with Sukarth; winter is better.

I guess I'll have to wait till it is summer to make my decision about the weather.
She moved a bit out of the way of Jekheth's claws. Pawing at the ground, she wondered what it would be like in the summer. Looking up at Jekheth she asked him, How warm is the summer?

Amenth watched from her weyrledge at the activities. She wasn't entirely sure what they were doing but she would make out that she did. She was enjoying looking at the snow in the sun, but thought they could be an interesting group. Am I not invited to your Gather? She voiced, trying to sound as hurt and left out as possible. She expected more the older dragons to be the ones to reply to her as the few hatchlings she had spoken to had been apparently unable to answer.

You have lain in the sun, imagine the warmth it provides everywhere - coming up from the earth, in the air around you, softening the breeze so that it feels good against your hide. When the air is warm it is heavenly to swim in the lake, and very refreshing. The days are longer, too, so there's more time to sunbathe. Jekheth did his best to communicate the difference between winter and summer, but he felt that he was not doing it justice. You will see for yourself soon enough. And good day to you, my queen, He finished, turning his head and greeting Amenth.
You are welcome anytime, Alreth added, blinking up at Amenth with open invitation.

Amenth would have smiled at the pair. She did so enjoy the effect she had on the browns and bronzes of the weyr. True she had the ability to command all but the older Queens but it was fun to not try. Rising with delibirate slowness she stretched thoroughly before gliding down to them. She made quite a flashy scene as she did, pulling off as many aerial manouvers as she could that didn't require her to flap her wings. She came to a graceful land a short distance from the others. Ralia might be content to hide in the shadows of other but Amenth was not.
