So, occasionally when I go to a lake (or in this case, a river, which was strange) I pick up some shells. Just your standard clam shells. What I do though, is grind away the rocky surface to reveal the iridescence underneath. I personally find them to be very appealing afterwards.

I'll post some pictures whenever I get around to grinding these ones down, it takes a while without files and the like :/.

At any rate, I was wondering if anyone knows, as with stones and herbs, if shells hold a specific spiritual value? I tried to research it a little net-wise, but was unable to find anything.

This is purely a thing of curiosity, but I thought I would throw it out there and see if anyone had any information on the subject. Anything would be highly appreciated. wink

They are plenty symbolic, which is all I found online at first, but then I found this:

Shell:
The homes of the small creatures of the sea, appears in many forms and contains the energies of the god of the sea. These vacated homes have been used to provide boundless growth in all areas of endeavor. They can be used to stimulate intuition, sensitivity, imagination, and adaptability. One type of shell, the abalone shell has also been used to enhance smudging activities, bringing the energy of continuity to the environment and instilling a stable atmosphere. It has been revered by the ancient tribes throughout the world as a magical gift from the sea - one which can stimulate fertility of both the mind and body and can protect against un-cooperative attitudes and actions.

The credibility is a little shakey being from a jewelry site, considering intentions to sell et cetera, but it was at http://www.keystonejewelry.com/id24.htm

Symbolically, it seems to hold the same value as the chalice in Druidism.

I know that shells with holes in them (made by a natural process) are considered to help in areas of fertility, be it physical or creative.
I also know that some practitioners of Hoodoo use them as a scrying tool, so they may have some psychic or divination properties as well. That wouldn't surprise me as they come from water which is generally considered to be connected to psychic, emotional and spiritual energies. As well as being associated with the land of the dead.
As for what the individual types of shells carry as properties I can't say, though it would probably be along the line of the personality and behaviors of what ever creature it came from, like antlers, and bird talons are.
