Jekheth was snoring. With every gusty breath snow curled in elegant little spirals away from his nostrils, catching the sunlight and sparkling. Every last one of his eyelids was shut, his limbs were spread out, and his tail twitched a little in his sleep.
M'leck was putting the finishing touches on a new coat of oil he had applied over the course of about an hour, enjoying the familiar activity and his bronze's pleasure in it. He moved his brush in careful spirals around Jekheth's wing joints, kneeing on the bronze's back and massaging the skin with the soft bristles. His three fire lizards had helped to bathe the dragon and were now curled up on his head in a tight little bundle, all of them asleep as well. M'leck had brought a heavy overshirt with him but was not wearing it. He had grown hot and sweaty and had discarded it. He knew that when he stopped working he would need it again, so he kept it close to him - spread out on his dragon's hide.
Next to them but closer to the water another pair was also enjoying the sunshine. A small blue dragon was curled comfortably in a snow wallow, his head resting idly on the ground and his eyes gazing off into space. They were whirling a happy blue-green color and the first of their eyelids had closed slowly. Vidrienth, too, had been recently oiled, and was now listening to his rider, M'ran, playing a small pipe softly. M'ran was leaning against Vidrienth's shoulder and his eyes were closed. He was enjoying the company and the quiet, and expressing his contentment with a small, cheerful tune he remembered from the harper hall.
Further out onto the lake, away from the shore, a brown hide could been seen cleaving the water's surface. Alreth was swimming, every now and then diving below the surface and emerging with an almighty splash. He was perfectly happy at the moment, it was beginning to warm up enough for him to enjoy the water's chill. Zavir paddled happily after him, cheeping and twittering. attempting to follow him under and over the water. The two made a comical pair, not least because their sizes were so different. N'mar was lounging on the shore, stretching out comfortably after his morning run. His breathing was slightly faster than normal but still controlled. He had pushed himself, and enjoyed every minute of it. All three were the picture of contentment.

Amenth perched looking down at the dragons and riders, she wanted to go for a swim but was against the idea of upset the tranquillity the pairs had achieved. She looked at Ralia, who was sat on the edge of the weyrledge oiling Marico. Amenth had taken quite a liking to the friendly lizard. She'd not heard him hiss once, even in retaliation to Remmeck. The bronze had become depressed since the plague. He spent a lot of his time sleeping in Ralia's bedchamber and she couldn't get him to go outside. Many times he'd been found lying on the floor after trying to fly again. Amenth felt sorry for the little firelizard, he had been such a flier and to lose that...
Ralia glanced quickly up as she finished oiling Malico, she stopped cleaning up and looked at the gold. Her eyes were blue and she was looking toward Ralia's bedchamber, Ralia knew why, Remmeck. She let out a sigh and looked away from the weyr. Is there nothing we can do? Amenth asked looking to her rider with a slight lilt of hope in her voice. "I wish there was, Amenth, but you heard the healer; he'll never be able to fly properly again."
But he will get slightly better?
"Never past gliding." Ralia started to clean up again and Malico flew off inside the chamber.
Once close enough Malico dropped to the ground, though only a baby himself, he still realised that Remmeck could no longer fly and that flying in front him would not help. The little blue scrambled up the side of a chair and jumped onto the mantle, trying to use his wings as little as possible but it came so naturally. Malico walked over to where Remmeck was lying at the end of the mantle. He gave a questioning chirrup and tilted his head. Remmeck merely moved his head to turn away from the blue. Malico wasn't giving up that easily, he walked around Remmeck so he was in front of him and chirruped again. Remmeck let out a low rumble of warning but Malico ignored it. The blue was trying to get Remmeck to come out and play with him as he had for the first days. Malico kept trying and Remmeck eventually just ignored him, closing his eyes and apparently going to sleep.
Meanwhile outside Amenth, with Ralia on board, flew slowly down toward the lake. Neither were in the happiest spirits and when Amenth landed Ralia simply slid off and sat on the ground near the edge of the water. Amenth chose to stay in the shallows where she could easily hear and see Ralia. After a few minutes she saw a blue firelizard appear from between and rest on Ralia's shoulder. Another failed attempt.

Vidrienth trilled a soft, polite greeting to the queen as she flew down, expressing wordlessly that he was pleased to see her though he did not move from his comfortable position. M'ran looked up to see who had arrived, and smiled around his pipe at Ralia. M'leck paused, patting the gleaming hide below him before looking up. He smiled a little when he saw that it was Ralia, pleased to see her out and about even though she seemed depressed. He had heard that her lizard was sick and had felt very sorry about it, but he was very glad that she had not caught the sickness from the little fellow. He noted that her new blue lizard was with her and was pleased to see that his hide showed the vibrant colors of good health. Moving carefully so as not to disturb Jekheth, M'leck grabbed his overshirt and pulled it on before sliding down his bronze's side. Ralia looked depressed, so M'leck decided now might be a good time to try and cheer her up. On his way over he passed by N'mar who looked up at him and grinned but did not move.
"Good afternoon, Ralia," M'leck said, standing a polite distance away. "And the same to you, Amenth. I hope I find you both well."
Out on the lake Alreth burst upward from the water and straightened his forelegs as he came back down, creating a sizable wave in the process. Zavir twittered happily, closing his eyes and dropping his jaw as he rode the wave outward. He noted the small blue next to the queen rider, and chirruped a happy invitation to play which Alreth echoed: the large brown was fond of lizards.

"Come on Rita! You should come swimming with Gabranth and I! You know he won't hurt you!" R'lie laughed loudly. It had been some time since he had become a candidate and then a rider, but Rita still hadn't gotten used to call him R'lie. Sometimes she slipped into calling him Rylie, out of pure affection. She waved her hand at him, content with sitting on the shore of the lake. It wasn't that she minded water, but. . . she hardly belonged with them. Maybe if she could impress a dragon one day she would join them. She felt lonley being R'lie's second favorite person in the world, but that was a given.
One day he would find someone to love forever, more deeply than he could ever lover his sister. Then one day he would have children of his own, and then she would hardly be important. At the same time, she would probably go home to do those same things. Not unless she could impress. Then she could stay in this place for forever if she wanted.
But they couldn't go home now. There was sickness spreading through the Weyr. Rita and R'lie were fortunate to still be healthy, but how long could that last? Maybe only a few hours, or days, or maybe never. She was a little terrified, but having her brother and his beautiful blue dragon to comfort her when her heart began to race put her a little more at ease. You lived day by day in the Weyr, and threadfall to threadfall.
R'lie waded out of the lake, only in his trousers before he sat beside her, the leather squeking as he collapsed. "It's really cold!" He started.
"You might get sick," Rita said back. "We should go inside. We could get Klah."
'But we're having so much fun. A little while longer Rita?' Gabranth's eyes swirled sadly, and he beat her. She could never say no to him. She couldn't say no to anyone.
R'lie laughed and vaulted to his feet before leaping back into the lake, soaking himself over again. He was really going to get sick if he continued diving into the cold lake water everyday. Still, maybe it would make him stronger.
