To the one that I serve Many pagan paths require members to take an oath of some form upon becoming a member of that faith. Others its between you and the deity. Still oaths are important to some and not as important as it is to others. Are oaths an important part of your path? Why or why not? What do you define as an oath? Are there times when it's appropriate to break an oath you have made? Why are those times appropriate? Have you sworn any oaths? I will give my all

Oaths will become important to my path at some time in the not so distant future. Right now I'm very much on a steep learning curve but once that curve steadies out a bit and I settle into my path a bit more then oaths will be an important part of my studies and path.
An oath is, in effect, a promise that when broken results in a betrayal and punishment. And oath is a promise to keep a secret, protect and honour. It is in my eyes anyway!
The oath I will make can never be broken as long as I stay true to it in my own mind. Eg, if witchcraft was pushed underground in a witch hunt situation I would outwardly conform to save my life but maintain my oaths inwardly.
I've never sworn any oaths as of yet. I'm too young and inexperienced to know that those oaths won't be broken.

To the one that I serve Yeah. I have made one oath in my life. That was to spend this year really exploring my beliefs. Which I have been doing. If I wasn't I promised to do something to help others. I will give my all

(OK gonna try to answer this, been a few days of no sleep and stress at work) Quote: Are oaths an important part of your path? Why or why not? -yes it shows a dedication to the path and "worthiness" to be taught. Shows fidelity and piety. Quote: What do you define as an oath? -Pledging to do something with your life. To make an oath to a deity is to pledge with all of our might to follow the teachings of said deity. Quote: Are there times when it's appropriate to break an oath you have made? Why are those times appropriate? -No to do so would incur wrath and repercussions. Quote: Have you sworn any oaths? -Yes I have sworn oaths to my path and deities

Okay stupid question here. But what kind of an Oath would you take? I don't yet have a Coven, but is there any Oaths that I could take now?

To the one that I serve Kashaku-Tatsu Neko wyndy wytch Are oaths an important part of your path? Why or why not? -yes it shows a dedication to the path and "worthiness" to be taught. Shows fidelity and piety. Do you think oaths are honor based as well? To the one that I serve Kashaku-Tatsu Neko wyndy wytch What do you define as an oath? -Pledging to do something with your life. To make an oath to a deity is to pledge with all of our might to follow the teachings of said deity. Would an oath be stronger than a "promise"? To the one that I serve Kashaku-Tatsu Neko wyndy wytch Are there times when it's appropriate to break an oath you have made? Why are those times appropriate? -No to do so would incur wrath and repercussions. I see. In the Nordic tradition there are times when it is ok to break an oath and times when you shouldn't. This is illustrated by the myth of Fenrir and Tyr. To the one that I serve Kashaku-Tatsu Neko wyndy wytch Have you sworn any oaths? -Yes I have sworn oaths to my path and deities Have you sworn other oaths in your life (like to a pervious path)? I will give my all

To the one that I serve redtearsblackwings Okay stupid question here. No such thing as stupid questions. I will give my all To the one that I serve redtearsblackwings But what kind of an Oath would you take? That depends. I have an oath to spend this year really exploring my spirituality and I have been doing such. Oaths can be promises to people or Gods. I will give my all To the one that I serve redtearsblackwings I don't yet have a Coven, but is there any Oaths that I could take now? I'd only take an oath if you are sure you want to follow and do what you are doing. Oaths are contracts with deities and other beings. I will give my all

I think an oath is something very personal and deep. You can't make an oath lightly...kind of like a very deep promise I suppose.
*Tries to explain* An oath is pretty much set in stone. It's rules can't be bent. It is the be all, end all and entirety of who you are and what you strive for.

Kashaku-Tatsu Quote: Do you think oaths are honor based as well? honour would be keeping your oaths So there are no times when it's apropriate to break an Oath? Kashaku-Tatsu Quote: Would an oath be stronger than a "promise"? ya.... to pledge fidelity to someone or path is more than a promise Do you think there are different degrees of oaths? Kashaku-Tatsu Quote: Have you sworn other oaths in your life (like to a pervious path)? Other than to my husband? no To the one that I serve I see. I will give my all

neko wyndy wytch So there are no times when it's apropriate to break an Oath? No, you don't make something as binding as an oath when you're not prepared to follow it to your grave. Kashaku-Tatsu Do you think there are different degrees of oaths? No. Your oath is your binding word there are not degrees to your word. pledging to love someone for the rest of your life is just as prominent as pledging to follow a path. If you break your word on something small, what is going to keep you from faltering on a larger more difficult oath?

To the one that I serve I see. I was only asking. I know for myself that I consider there to be different magnitudes of oaths. The oath I swore January first lasts one year and one year alone. I have not broken the oath, but I don't consider it to be a life long oath. I will give my all

Then that is the duration of your oath and as long as you don't stray from it when the contract is over it's done. Doesn't make it any less in magnitude from other oaths

Or have I got the wrong idea? I would follow one, I just don't know what an Oath intails or what ones to take or anything like that. Due to the fact that I can't find any covens around I don't know much.

Due to the fact that I can't find any covens around I don't know much. It is a lot more powerful than a simple promise. It is a binding contract for life most of the time.
