Hi there,
This is my first topic in the guild so if I do anything wrong please let me know. n_n
I know that there is a seperate thread about a new Emma adaptation featuring dance and such which I don't really know anything about so I just wanted to post information about the BBC's upcoming adaptation of Emma over here.
Romola Garai (Atonement, Vanity Fair) stars as the "handsome, clever and rich" Emma Woodhouse in BBC One's fresh and witty adaptation of Jane Austen's comic masterpiece Emma.
Adapted by BAFTA-winning writer Sandy Welch (Our Mutual Friend, Jane Eyre, North And South) this humorous and perceptive serial from BBC Drama Production provides a rich insight into one of Austen's most complex characters.
Over four hour-long episodes the drama follows the dire consequences of Emma's failed schemes in this clever comedy of realisation and self-discovery.
The esteemed and impressive cast also includes Michael Gambon (Cranford, Gosford Park) as Emma's affectionate, neurotic father who unusually allows her to be mistress of their household; Jonny Lee Miller (Byron, Eli Stone, Trainspotting) as Mr Knightley, Emma's shrewd and attractive neighbour, whose strength of character is in sharp contrast to her father; Jodhi May (Einstein And Eddington, Friends And Crocodiles) as Miss Taylor, Emma's former governess who marries the good-humoured Mr Weston played by Robert Bathurst (Cold Feet, White Teeth, My Dad's The Prime Minister); and Tamsin Greig (The Diary Of Anne Frank, Green Wing) as the incessantly chatty, well-meaning Miss Bates whose poverty draws the pity and goodwill of all of Highbury.
The four x 60-minute serial is produced by BBC Drama Production and was filmed in late spring/early summer 2009 around the Home Counties.
Emma was commissioned by Ben Stephenson, Controller, Drama Commissioning, and Jay Hunt, Controller, BBC One, for BBC One and will transmit in autumn 2009.
Cast list Emma – Romola Garai Knightley – Jonny Lee Miller Mr Woodhouse – Michael Gambon Harriet Smith – Louise Dylan Ann Taylor/Weston – Jodhi May Mr Weston – Robert Bathurst Frank Churchill – Rupert Evans Jane Fairfax – Laura Pyper Miss Bates – Tamsin Greig Mrs Bates – Valerie Lilley Mr Elton – Blake Ritson Augusta Elton – Christina Cole John Knightley – Dan Fredenburgh Isabella – Poppy Miller Robert Martin – Jefferson Hall Mrs Goddard – Veronica Roberts Mrs Cole – Liza Sadovy Miss Martin 1 – Eileen O'Higgins Miss Martin 2 – Sarah Ovens Mrs Churchill – Susie Trayling Mr Dixon – Frank Doody Miss Campbell/Dixon – Amy Loughton
There is more to the press release article which this is from but I picked out the more interesting pieces.
Wasn't sure if everyone knew about this upcoming adaptation so thought I'd just make sure.

Seems exciting! But I may have trouble watching the previous Edmund Bertram as Mr. Knightly, lol.

They showed it on Masterpiece Classic on PBS. I liked parts of it. I liked Tamsin Grieg as Miss Bates, her interpretation really brought about the loneliness of her lot in life. I like Romola Garai, Michael Gambon and Johnny Lee Miller also. I didn't really like the guy playing Frank Churchill.

This version of emma was pretty good. I'm used to seeing the 70's version so it was nice to see this version. There are pieces that I liked in both but on the whole I think that this one woudl appeal to a larger auidence because it seemed like they had changed the language for the auidence, made it less formal I guess in the hopes to attract more people. It will be coming out on DVD sometime in late feb. on amazon

I could be one-sided since I'm so excited to see Masterpiece Theater showing Austen dramas again. I loved love Emma. The costumes were beautiful. Scenery was appropriate. Mr. Elton was awesome, I meant the actor. Hilarious. The cast was great. Oh, Mr. Knightley if only I could find a replicate of you in the world. As for the soundtrack it wasn't as exploding as Sense and Sensibility (2007) it was suitable for drama. So that's my little input, and yes I will re-watch it again.

I recorded it and I am glad I did. I really liked this version. It was funnier than the others. I still like the others as well but this one was more detailed and explained a lot more about the characters.

Yes the Sense and Sensibility soundtrack was definately one of my faves. Wonder where I can get a copy...
