A/N: I started writing this last year. The prologue is set a little more than a month after he was found by Sho. Kei's POV.

Prologue

I am lying on my back in the darkest corner of the warehouse. Around me, the midday sun filters through the dirty and broken windows. It catches on the broken glass that litters the floor and the ornaments so carefully hung by the boys. It burns my eyes and I turn away to face the wall. As I close my eyes, I hear footsteps heading towards me. Considering how light they are, it is most definitely Sho, not that Toshi or Shinji would care to come see me anyway. They see me as useful, but are too afraid that I would get desperate and turn on them.

He is walking even more carefully than usual. He must assume I am asleep again. So I pretend to be. You see, the past two weeks or so, this has become a routine happening. Around noon, Sho comes in and walks over to my corner where I am lying down and pretending to sleep. Then he curls up to me, just barely touching me, and we lay like that for an hour or so in silence. About an hour later, he gets up and heads off again before I can "wake up". This time is no different. Or at least, it isn't at first. He walks around to my front and lies down, scooting as close to me as he can without making much bodily contact. I hear his breathing slow down as his body relaxes and I almost smile. Then, without opening my eyes, I speak to him, "Sho," He is startled and immediately jumps up and backs away, but I continue, "why are you here? Why do you want my company?" I ask. No reply. All I hear is him scuffing his shoe against the ground. I let out a sigh, open my eyes, and hold out my arms, "Come here Sho." I say softly. I see a smile playing at the corners of his mouth as he lies next to me again. This time, now unafraid of rejection, he presses tight to me, nuzzling his head into my chest, and I wrap him in my arms. Only one thought passes through my mind as my eyes shut and I drift into sleep. He thinks he needs me... but I need him more... He has given me reason to live again...

That afternoon I dream of Luka; of my "transformation". I'd had a normal life up until that point. I went to school, had a loving family, and even performed in small livehouses and bars with the band my friends and I had formed. The night he came for me... that's where my dream begins...

I walk out the back door of the livehouse. It is dark. I stayed late after my performance, having a few drinks at the bar. I start to walk to my house, but change my mind. My friend's house is closer, if I take the shortcut through the park, and then I won't have to deal with my parents for being late and drunk. Not really paying attention to my surroundings, I begin to walk, and before I know it I am at the entrance to the park. The swings creak in the wind as a cloud covers the moon. I am held back for a moment by an inexplicable feeling of danger, but I shake it off and continue with my route. As the wind blows again, I shiver, and the saying, "somebody just walked over your grave" immediately comes to mind. Only seconds later, it becomes ironic to me as I am pressed roughly against a tree by a larger body and something sharp sinks deep into my neck. As I lose consciousness, I find myself praying to the God I thought I no longer believed in.

Fire... I feel liquid fire filling me as my eyes flutter open. A man is kneeling at my side, his wrist held to my mouth and dripping a warm substance down my throat. I blink a few times and realize how clear everything looks and how unbelievably advanced my hearing has become. The substance in my mouth is blood, I can tell by the coppery taste, but it tastes so good, better than I ever thought it tasted before. I want more. As this feeling comes to me, a certain thought enters my mind. Not even a thought, but knowledge. I have not been granted death, but I can no longer truly be alive. He has changed me, is changing me, with his blood. As he pulls away, I feel a sharp pain spreading in my body. My heartbeat quickens and my breath comes out in short pants. All of my muscles seem to be tensing at once and I cannot control it. There is so much pain. My eyes close and I feel tears leaking out of the corners as I try to hold back my cries. I hear him walk away and I whimper. In the still-human side of my mind, I am scared, I am alone, and I am in pain. I feel my body tense one last time and I black out.

I wake with a start, but Sho remains sleeping beside me. A little more than a half hour has passed and the sun is starting to become clouded over. Soon it will rain and I can hunt. I let out a sigh and pull closer to the boy, nuzzling into his shoulder. As I drift off once more, I am sent again into my past…

"Kei... Kei!" Luka yells angrily at me. I dazedly look up from my dark hiding place. "You need to eat." He says. I shake my head, no. I don't want to. I don't want to be a killer like him. He just stares at me and sighs, "You will eat eventually. You will have to. You have a calling to the blood." He leaves then, but I remain there, shaking. I want my parents... I want my friends... I don't want to be a monster...

He returns an hour or so later, a teenage boy in his grip. The boy is only around fifteen years old, by the looks of it, and his heartbeat pounds loudly in my ears. As Luka bites into the neck of the boy, I hear a distinct whimper, and realize that it is coming from my own lips. Luka releases the boy's neck and his blood trickles down and along his collarbone. I lick my lips and suddenly am on top of him, running my tongue over the wound and drinking deep. It is so good, so warm... I indulge myself until I feel the flow begin to taper off, and then I pull away with the realization of what I have just done. Staring at the body, unable to wipe away the blood from myself, I pull back and retreat once again into the dark. A tear streams down my face and I feel it hit my hand. As I look down at it, I feel myself break down into sobs. It had collected the blood from my face before hitting my hand, where it now glistens red in the dark.

I wake again, but this time it is at Sho's hand gently touching my face. He wipes the tears from my cheeks with one hand as his other runs through my hair, trying to soothe away my nightmare. When I open my eyes, he gives me a look of understanding and caresses my cheek one last time before getting up and walking away, leaving me to deal with my thoughts. I can't help but feel a surge of affection towards him, though. Throughout the past month that I have spent with him, his brother, and his friend, I have taken care of his every bad dream, chased away all of his monsters, and now he is trying to do the same for me. If only he realized how much he has already done...
