OK, I have my copy from the library and I'm set to begin reading tomorrow. With any luck, I should finish over the weekend. I'll be curious as to what you all say.

I attempted to read it once, but it didn't quite get my interest. I just couldn't create that world in my mind. Sad to say, I think I missed out on a good read, and the cover illustration certainly was interesting. I especially like the first scene of 'death' with the different pools, but like I said, I had a hard time picturing what was happening and organizing some sort of construct of the world, so I couldn't really enjoy or finish it.

I should be going to library to pick up my copy at the beginning of next week, so hopefully I'll get it read over next week.

I've read the book too many times to count. I came across it back when I was in 7th or 8th grade before the rest of the series came out. It's largely due to the book that Garth Nix became one of my favorite authors and still resides of one in YA for me. I could say that Sabriel is my favorite character, but she isn't. Touchstone is 2nd place for me, but it's really Mogget that I love.

I only just recently thought to wonder who narrated the book in the audiobook version to find it was Tim Curry. (The Rocky Horror Picture Show, in case no one knows him for anything else) He really brought Mogget to life.

Anyways, I hope other's enjoy it. I think Nix's interpretation of death and what lays beyond it pretty creative. Though others have used water and rivers, etc' to depict it, it's the gates and what lies beyond each of them, good and bad, that is rather creative. Though the reader doesn't really get to see all the gates until the last book, Abhorsen.

Nevertheless, despite reading other books I think I'll pick this one back up off my shelf to read.

Tim Curry, huh? I might have to find this just for that! I don't know about the Rocky Horror Picture show, but he played a couple of characters I really like...the goofy dimwitted ship's doctor in The Hunt for Red October and Long John Silver in Muppet Treasure Island.

I've gotten a good start, and I'm surprised by how much I like it. I was afraid it would be too much of a kids' book, but the story is really interesting.

That's what I'm worried about, that I think it'll be too much of a kids' book. I will have a look for it at the library today though. I'm going into town in a little while.

Yeah I remember him as Long John Silver too. He really brings life to the characters. If I had known he was the one narrated it I might have bought the audiobook when it first came out. He does the rest of the trilogy as well.

It's not too much of a kids book. It's, in my opinion, right on the edge of YA and Adult Fiction.

E. A Solinas "ea_solinas" says it for me:
Quote:
It's a perfect example of dark fantasy, with its grotesque dead zombies that occasionally lurch out to attack the heroes, magical bells, and shadowy beasties that can (sometimes) be restrained. It takes the trappings of high fantasy and lets us see them through a mirror darkly.

The dark creatures that reside in the book certainly are interesting. Hope reading this inspires others to give the rest of the series a go. Though Lirael is a bit boring at the beginning due to the girl of the same name, it picks up quickly with Sameth though. Anyways, glad to hear you like it so far clovereffect ^^

I loved heart Sabriel. It was a really interesting take on magic and necromancy. I loved both Sabriel & Touchstone. I thought they were both very well round and interesting characters. The cat (who's name is escaping me at the moment) was also a very intriguing character. I would have liked to know more about it's history.

Sounds interesting, I'm looking forward to reading this one. Too bad I likely won't get a chance to look for a copy until I'm back home for fall break half-way through the month. I'm not that patient. WANT NOW. D:<

Mogget is my favorite character in the book. (the cat) His history really comes through in the last one, Abhorsen, though. His background isn't that predictable, which I was glad for, but you start to remember off handed things said about him from the first two books as you read the third.
I definitely love his snarky attitude ^_^

OK, I finished the book, and to answer the original questions posted...there might be some spoilers:

What did you think of the book overall? Overall, I thought it was an interesting story. I liked the necromancy aspect and traveling into death, as well as the bells used to control the dead.

What star rating would you give it and why? I hate star ratings, to be honest. I say 3.5/5, meaning I liked it and will continue the series, but it won't ever be a real favorite of mine, in part because I like more mature characters and stories.

What was your favourite part and why? It would have to be Abhorsen coming back for his last hundred hundred heartbeats, and taking the bell he know would send himself into final death.

Who is your favourite character and why? I guess it would have to be Sabriel herself, since you get most insights into her character, and her self-doubt at having to deal with Kerrigor when she barely knows what it means to be Abhorsen.

etc etc.... Nothing much else to add. It was a good book, and an easy, enjoyable read. I plan to read the next in the series soon.

Edit - did I read it wrong, or does Lirael have 700 pages???

What did you think of the book overall?
I think it is a good read. Where it lacks in character developement, it makes up for with its interesting and creative world. I've never come across a set-up quite like it. Plus this was my first run in with necromancy! I like the ideas of the bells, river, and gates. I like how each bell has a name and a story. I liked how Sabriel seemed really young for the job and had to conquer her uncertainty about becoming the Abhorsen. Touchstone has always kind of bothered me, I can never put a finger on why. Mogget is awesome! Who doesn't love a cute kitty?
What star rating would you give it and why?
I would give it a 4/5, I only wish there would have been a bit more to the characters.
What was your favourite part and why?
I liked it when Sabriel and Touchstone were in the village and the children said their poems. I always love when a book has its own poetry or rhymes.
Who is your favourite character and why?
I liked Mogget. He's got attitude, plus he's a cat...ish being. Close enough though. He has a cool role in the later books too.
etc etc....
