I've heard that many schools don't perform or do their martial art in front of an audience. I was wondering about your opinions on this so.......post away!
My karate school is also a taiko school. We do performances all the time. We just performed at the aki matsuri this year. I really don't feel too nervous just a little now.

At my school we do demonstrations as often as we can. We have found that it is not only good for the school in getting people interested but also good for those participation in the demo. Very few people like to perform in front of crowds, they get nervous and technique can suffer. This same thing happens in a combat situation, people get nervous. I've found these demonstrations help people get used to it.

depends on what you mean by demonstrations. there are some schools i've heard of or seen, that may have plenty of nice and good traditional katas, but when they do demonstrations, they use their 'demo katas' which is basically xma. (not really a martial art in my opinion)
my sensei used to go to local highschools, and do a day or two of classes for gym, he has a few fun stories about wrestlers mouthing off and him putting them in their place. ^_^ my dojo also would have any students that attended the highschool perform a kata or two for everyone to see.

When I took Tae Kwon Do, we did demos at some local high schools. At my Kenpo school, we have never given any demos, but have held self-defense seminars for local businesses, like Caribou Coffee, etc.

In My BJJ class as far as I know, we don't do demos. We do on the other hand go to grappling compitions alot, dose that count?

My class does 3-5 performances a year, I think. One of those performances is in the dojo, and is for family to come and see what we've learned.
