The Hogwarts library contains tens of thousands of books on thousands of shelves (PS12). Included in its many sections is an Invisibility Section (CS11), a section with information about dragons (PS14), and a Restricted Section at the back, set off with a rope. A signed note from a teacher is required to peruse that section of the library; it contains books of Dark Magic only used by older students studying advanced Defence Against the Dark Arts. One of the books in this section screams when opened (PS12).
The library closes at 8 pm. (GF20)
The library books have various spells on them to prevent students from defacing or stealing them (QA). Chocolate (and presumably other food) is forbidden in the library (OP29). Madam Pince is the kind of librarian who sees herself as the guardian and protector of the books, at odds with the students who try to use them. Her demeanor does not suggest that she would be very helpful. In fact, when Hermione, Ron, and Harry were looking for information about Nicolas Flamel, they decided they wouldn't even ask her. Research must be very difficult in the Hogwarts library..
Students may place books on hold; during the Basilisk attacks in 1992 - 1993 [Y12 - Y13], the book Hogwarts A History had a two-week waiting list (CS9).
Hermione could get a book out of the restricted section by obtaining a signed note from Professor Lockhart. She took out Moste Potente Potions and kept it out for months.
Hermione actually tore a page out of a library book about magical creatures. She was found Petrified with the page clenched in her fist. The page described the Basilisk.
Snape told Harry that it was against the rules to carry a library book out of the castle (PS11). He probably just made that rule up on the spot to get Harry into trouble, however.

Henry entered the library, he intended to search the multitude of tomes in the hopes that one of them might be able to assist him with his abismal dancing skills.

Cassidy walked into the library and looked around. She didn't see anyone. "Huh. I thought I heard someone walking in here." She shrugged and started looking at the books. She saw Henry's arm and stepped forward to see whoit belonged to. "Oh. You." She sighed. "Hi. I'm Cassidy. Cassidy Skyy." She held out her hand.

Henry looked up from the book he was reading. He quirked an eyebrow at the girl, recognizing her as a Hufflepuff almost immediately. "Henry Montague" He said, wondering what this hufflepuff could possibly be thinking talking to him.

Haley walked briskly into the library, a quill behind her ear. She thought to herself, "I never have enough books". She hoped to find some interesting reads in the impressive library that had served her well over the years.

Henry's eyes flickered over to the headmistress, watching her go by as he answered Cassidy's question. "Yes."

Henry drummed his fingers agaist the book in his hand, he didn't like the way this conversation was going "I haven't decided yet"

She shrugged. "Well, I don't think I was going. i never should have jumped up and agreed. I haven't anything to wear for that and I don't like dancing." She turned to the books. "Learning to dance?" She turned and started walking away. Awkward... She thought.

Henry blushed slightly at her question and didn't answer. The subject of dancing had always made him uncomfterble. As Cassidy began to walk away he called out, "You should wear something blue, I bet it would really bring out your eyes."

Cassidy stopped. "Really?" She turned. Cassidy smiled a little. "Thanks. I see what I can do before the dance. I have to find a dress."
