If I may, I regular that forum.
'Pet Shops', though I think the better term is B/C Shops, usually have staff or one person who colors in lineart of different stages to sell to people. Each pet is colored different and can be won by different methods, depending on their rarity in the shop. They grow when the shop manager updates the image. Like how you would notice a mistake in a picture when you post it, go to delete it from Photobucket, upload the fixed version with the same filename, and refresh to see the image change to the fixed version.
They can also breed by the owner(s) filling in a form when slots are open. The offspring are merely colored in a mix of the parent's colors.
Basically, most are just sig pets. Something fun to collect, decorate your sig, and roleplay with.
There are some, like the one in my sig, that are RP-Required to grow and the artwork is original, not the same lineart each time. They're more interactive, 'specially if they're concept based. Meaning you get to decide how your kid looks. They also have a more developed story since roleplay is required. RP-Required tend to be humanoid. You're given a journal to do solo writing with your pet's guardian(parent) and themselves, or anyone else visiting. It's like a record of the pets life.
Click Pari in my sig to see an example of a journal. ;o Common courtesy of journals is to NEVER post in someone's unless you've been given permission. Or here if I've taken her out. Yes, she starts as an egg. You can also click the link at the bottom of my sig for examples of others.
