Remmeck hissed at the blue in frustration. He did not like this. The little bronze could no longer fly at all and even gliding proved difficult. His wings completely lacked the muscle to support themselves. This had led him to drag them along the floor instead of furling them. The poor little bronze looked so pathetic when he 'accidentally' wandered into the kitchen that the people inside, so unprepared for his pity act, couldn't help but feed him scraps. This had led though to Remmeck putting on a little extra weight, making Malico appear even slimmer in comparison. Malico bobbed under the water and then back up. Not once since his hatching had he hissed. The skinny blue was the picture of calm. His eyes were always a beautiful sea green and he almost seemed to be smiling whenever anyone looked at him. He was trying to teach Remmeck to swim as Ralia had decided the bronze was doing himself no favours with the bonus weight. Malico was a natural swimmer and had developed a bizarre style that made it look as though he were born to swim and not fly. He would flatten his legs and wings against his body and seemed to use his tail to propel himself. Malico would shoot through that water and could easily be mistaken for a blue fish rather than a firelizard.
---
Ralia and Amenth watched from the shore as Malico tried again to get Remmeck to swim without relying on his wings. Amenth's newly oiled hide glistened in the sun as her head rested next to Ralia who looked a little less elegant. Her over shirt had numerous oily smears down the front and her hair was plaited straight down her back. She was breathily heavily, much to her dismay, after climbing over the gold to oil her thoroughly. She had had breathing problems since the plague and found that she couldn't do as much without stopping to catch her breath. Maybe it would be better to switch so that she bathed and oiled Amenth before their morning flight. At least you are all alive. Amenth opened one eye to look at her rider. The group had been fortunate that although to of them had caught the plague none of them had died. And you dear one. I want never to have to relive that horrible nightmare. Ralia shuddered without thought as the delirium dream came back. Without even thinking she reached out and scratched Amenth's eye ridge, just to check she was still there.

A small jeweled eye opened slowly in response to the noises of the frolicing fire lizards. A little ways away along the shore of the lake a small blue head was raised. A fire lizard who was barely larger than a baby had perched himself on the branch of a bush, enjoying the warmer weather and taking the opportunity to nap. He tilted his head slightly to one side, considering the two others splashing in the water. The one bronze looked awkward and frustrated, and his tone of voice was one of dissatisfaction. The other blue he recognized as his queen's son who had been born several months earlier. Cheeping, Shivvy raised himself up onto his legs and touched the minds of the rest of his fair, reporting this development to Diantha. The queen was hunting with her attending bronze and resented the intrusion at first, but became eager with the idea of visiting one of her babies. She appeared moments later out of between with Lumeth hovering next to her, and Shivvy leapt up to join her. In an arrow formation with Diantha in the lead they flitted over and began circling over the pair of lizards swimming in the lake. Diantha chirruped greetings and glided down smoothly to land on the surface of the water while her male escorts made lazy circles overhead.

Malico chirruped when he saw his mother and did a strange backflip into the water. He swam downward, made a circluar movement and then shot upward. Keeping his wings and legs pinned, he broke the surface and jumped over the gold, easily passing her sentinels. Remmeck hissed at the bronzes invasion. He was getting less and less sociable with the other lizards. He did not like that they could all fly and he could not. He hissed again before turning and swimming of toward shore. Malico broke the surface and gave a small cry, a mix of panic and sadness. He swam along, delivering one reprimanding look at the bronzes, but then cut off Remmeck. The bronze bat his leg at Malico and tried darting to the side, but Malico was faster and managed to cut off every escape route. Remmeck gave a defeated sigh and a low growl could be heard as Malico used his head to push the bronze back.

Diantha watched with amusement and pleasure as Malico twisted and turned around her, letting out a rumble of approval at the arc he made in the air: proud of him and letting him know it. As Remmeck began swimming off Diantha watched him, tilting her head from side to side, regarding him with one eye, then the other, then both. Sensing that he was both jealous and upset, she curled her neck around and chirruped a crisp order to Lumeth and Shivvy. The pair landed and began paddling along, cheeping and splashing one another. Diantha swam out to meet the returning lizards, rubbing her head breifly against Malico's before looking Remmeck in the eye again. She blinked rapidly for a few moments before bumping his chin and twittering in a bossy sort of way, joining in the effort to get him to swim. She herself carefully observed Malico's method and tried to imitate it, hissing a little when she discovered that it was not so easy as it looked. Shivvy and Lumeth watched, chittering and chatting in amusement at their queen's consternation, looking at one another and then back at the others.

Remmeck gave an inelegant snort as Malico tried to get him to swim again. He looked away from Malico and gave an inward groan as he the queen firelizard swimming toward them. This was proving to be a difficult day. Malico accepted the head rub a chirruped as his mother bumped the bronze he saw as his brother. He demonstrated his method of swimming again, not only for Remmeck but for Diantha tis time as well. Remmeck snorted again, insistent that he did not need to learn a new method. He began to swim across the surface of the water gaining speed as he moved, using his legs to propel himself and his wings trailing behind again. As he dove under the surface he felt a slight tug but ignored it. He swam underwater and was doing alright, until he turned. When he turned his wings were pushed open and ceased his movements. the current kept his wings open and started to drag him back. He felt something his hit him from beneath and push him to the surface. He looked around and noticed Malico hovering just under him.

Diantha, insistant that she not be the only one failing at the new method, ordered Lumeth and Shivvy to try it out as well. When Malico pushed Remmeck back to the surface Lumeth twittered at the other bronze and made a "try it" face, demonstrating that he was willing to humiliate himself by trying and that the bronze shouldn't feel silly - he was in good company. Shivvy also attempted the motion, but ended up using his wings out of pure reflexes. Chittering his jaw rapidly together he surfaced and tried again, while Diantha watched mildly and studied Malico's motions carefully.
Overheard another lizard emerged from between; a brown this time. Trilling a welcome he dived down into the water and began splashing happily, paddling to Diantha and stroking her head by way of greeting.
N'mar watched from the shoreline, feeling slightly rueful now that Zavir had left him. He frowned and rubbed the base of his head, his stomach sinking as the absence of his firelizard meant that - once again - his immediate surrondings were silent to him.
I am coming, Alreth said, sensing N'mar's nervousness and gliding down from his high weyr-ledge. I shall hear for you while the little brother plays.
N'mar smiled sadly, watching his brown sail smoothly down and feeling a relief akin to ecstasy when he listened through Alreth's mind and hear the sound of water lapping on the shore. It was different than the perceptions of a human ear but it was sound and he was grateful for it. N'mar was feeling slightly worn out after his usual run, the warmer weather doing nothing to help his gloomy mood. His friends had been wonderful, Aleerna especially - she was such a sweet girl, but he was feeling like he just had to get away. N'mar was sick of people trying to coddle him, sick of the sympathetic and shocked looks when people realized that he was... deaf. N'mar clenched his teeth together at the tought of the word, growling a little. Alreth landed in front of him and leaned his head down. N'mar threw his arms around Alreth's snout and buried his face in the space below the giant green eye, relishing the support his friend provided. Only Alreth understood completely how N'mar felt: his frustrations, his pain. How he wanted people to help him but did not want people to help him, how isolated he felt even among friends, how much he missed M'leck who had expired in the infirmary mere days before N'mar had recovered... It was sunny, but N'mar couldn't have been gloomier.

Minno gently placed Capna in the waters of the lake. She hated the sight of this part of the Weyr as it reminded her too much of Tertiath. Yet she came here anyways to help her brown flit recover as much as he could from the illness.
Minno sat on a rock on the shore and pulled her legs up to rest her chin on. She watched the brown with empty eyes, seeing the other people and lizards too but ignored them. Quith remained on her shoulder, not wanting Hers to feel alone.
Capna swam slowly close to the other lizards. He had gotten much stronger than before, but still wasn't able to fly at all. He chirped a greeting to the little group, interested in what they were doing. One of them didn't look too happy. His wings looked similar to Capna's own. Useless.

Flying was liberating, even with all the plague business. He and his wonderful Gabranth were limited to where and what they could do, but what little flying they could do . . . it made the entire world smaller. If only they could have stayed up there forever. . . then they wouldn't have to worry about the plague at all. But no dragon had the strength to stay air-bound forever. It was impossible. So R'lie and Gabranth had to settle with landing by the lake shore. It was peaceful there, and quiet besides the sounds of dragon and flitters.
Gabranth carefully landed as to not jar his two passengers. Rita was there of course. She was never gone from R'lie for more than a few hours when they needed private time to bath or shower. The rest of the time . . . the two were inseparable. It was that close bond that enabled Rita to thank Gabranth, and him to respond back kindly.
Rita slid off Gabranth's back, landing softly. She could finally manage not to land on her behind after all the rides she got from R'lie. All the same, she had only been between once . . . and that was when the two siblings had been taken here. Are you going swimming Rylie?"
"Of course!" he answered. "You should go too, but no! You never want to go swimming when you might be watched. Have fun sitting on shore."
Rita frowned at him as he danced off, Gabranth sinking into the water happily.

Majesty chittered rapidly at Aleerna, not happy at the pace she was walking, he wanted to her walk faster! Something that Aleerna was not doing, mostly because she still had no idea where the little bronze was taking her or why. The images he was sending her were of water and what seemed to be firelizards swimming, though she wasn't sure why that meant she had to go as well; and Sidheth was asleep so she couldn't ask her to help translate what Majesty wanted. So she sighed and sped up a little, wondering what was going on.
As soon as the lake was in sight Majesty was off, wheeling away towards the water and the other firelizards, briefly stopping twice to brush against two of the humans also there. Aleerna recognised both immediatly and suddenly understood Majesty's impatience, for the girl sitting on a rock on the shore was Minno. The other was N'mar but Aleerna had a feeling that the brown rider wanted to be alone so she instead wandered over to Minno, though she couldn't but wave to Alreth as she did. Without saying anything she sat down on the shore next to the rock Minno was sitting on and watched as Majesty joined in the swimming.
Majesty chirped happily as he dived into the water, sending a wave splashing out. He recognised he mother and chattered a greeting at her and the others before swimming over to Capna, pausing to take a snap at a fish that swam underneath him, though he missed it.

Remmeck shook his head at the idea of trying again. He. Did. Not. Want. To. Try. Malico rolled his eyes and dove beneath the surface. He seemed to blend and disappear under the water and Remmeck started to get slightly agitated with the blue's disappearance. Just on cue Malico broke the surface just behind Remmeck at a blistering speed. He dove toward Remmeck and wrapped his front legs around the bronzes middle, dragging him down. Remmeck tried to writhe out of the small blue's grip as he was pulled deeper. Malico was deadweight and refusing to try and swim at all. He'd pinned Remmeck's front legs and wings to the bronzes body. Effectively trapping him and pulling him down. Ralia jumped up when she saw Malico drag Remmeck under. She raced forward as if to dive into the water to save him. All she could see was thrashing before the pair sank below her sights. Malico has a plan. Amenth voiced calmly, completely unnerved by the action. They'll drown Amenth! Malico might be able to get back up but Remmeck won't, he can't swim without his wings. Ralia said in obvious distress as she stood just at the edge of the water. That is the point. Amenth turned one blue eye to rest on her rider. He must swim or he will die. "But why must we take the chance?!" Ralia shouted, she was becoming hysterical as her lizards did not resurface.
Deeper now Remmeck was beginning to grow angrier. His eyes glow scarlet as he thrashed around trying to bite Malico who dodged every time. Malico fed the method repeated into Remmeck's head. Looping the motion and doing nothing else. With a shriek that was swallowed by the water Remmeck shifted his weight and lashed his tail, propelling himself upward. The movement carried up his body until his entire body was moving in a rhythm. Just before the pair reached the surface Malico released Remmeck and swam to the side. Remmeck shot out of the water and did a dive the same as Malico's. He hit the water and whipped his head around till he spotted the blue. Letting out a hiss he made a straight line for blue. Not even realising that he was using his tail to swim.
Ralia's breath left her in a rush as she saw the bronze emerge from the water. Her legs seemed to give out and she landed on her rear, her head in her hands. We must never repeat that experience. You may want to save Malico. Amenth voiced as she watched Remmeck chase after the blue, choosing to ignore the statement.

R'lie paused a moment, watching as a bronze firelizard chased angrily after another. He actually thought it was funny, but it looked like their owner (a woman now sitting on the ground) hardly thought the scene was funny. Oh firelizards, R'lie thought. They were truly amazing and amusing little creatures. . . not that he wanted one. Gabranth was more than enough for him. If he had to deal with more that two different thoughts running through his mind at a given time . . . he would probably kill someone. No one wanted that did they?
R'lie sighed and looked back at his sister, who had found herself a nice patch of grass to sit in. She looked positively . . . well he thought she looked glum. Her expression was just blank. She really needed to invest in a hobby. R'lie scratched the back of his head before he looked at his shining blue, who was wallowing happily in the lake, his eyes half closed. "You know what to do Gabranth," R'lie started pulling off his boots, swaying slightly as his balance was offset by his own movements.
Gabranth moved back and quickly pushed his wings forward and up, sending water out of the lake and onto the shore. Poor Rita had picked a bad spot, and screamed as the cold water saturated her clothing. She shot up and screamed, crossed her arms quickly. "Gabranth!"
"I'm sorry Rita," the blue lowered his head guiltily, bubbles popping on the surface of the water as he exhauled. "I am very big. I did not know I would splash you." his eyes whirled unhappily. "But now Rita will come swimming? She is already wet."
"Come swimming!" R'lie said loudly. "And stop looking like someone died! Now isn't the time to go looking like it's the end of the world."

Capna chattered a greeting to Majesty. If Quith was with them she would've caught that fish. She preferred hunting for her food than being fed pre-killed stuff.
He watched curiously as the other lizards were swimming in an odd style. Then Malico dragged Remmeck under. Interesting. When they resurfaced Capna asked Malico why he swimmed like that and how.
Minno just sat on her rock watching from shore. Her eyes flicked for a moment at the newcomers. A boy and a girl on a blue dragon. Her focus went back to the flits for a moment, then more movement caught her eye. This is getting annoying, she thought. Moving her head ever so slightly to get a better look at who it was, first she saw Majesty who stopped for a second to chitter a greeting to her and Quith, then she saw Aleerna coming not too far behind. Oh how lovely.
If circumstances were different, Minno would have smiled and said hello and maybe even given her a hug. But alas, they were not.
The comment she heard the boy of the blue dragon make, made her brow crease slightly. For some people it is! She thought. Quith rubbed her cheek to some how sooth her. That thought was a little too loud.

R'lie sighed dramatically and marched toward his poor half-drowned Rita, grass sticking to he bare feet. He grabbed her wrist and tugged her into his arms, screaming and kicking.
"R'lie please put me down!" she remarked. "I don't want to get all wet again! Oh, please R'lie please put me down!" To R'lie, she was being a little sister. They were fishers for crying out loud! Water was their life. He half suspected that they would leak water if they were ever injured.
"As you insist," of course, he dropped her into the lake. He was such a wonderful big brother. He laughed at her slightly as he trudged past her. "See? It's not so bad now is it, my Rita? You bathe don't you? This isn't any different. Plus, there's only dragons around really . . . and a couple riders." a gloomy girl sitting on a rock, and equally gloomy looking boy, and another woman. None of their names he knew.
"Aleerna," Gabranth started. "N'mar and Minno, both who face great losses. You should perhaps be a little kinder R'lie. We are lucky we are not sick." The Blue's eyes whirled softly. He usually wasn't this troubled, and R'lie looked up at him.
"Why are you suddenly so . . . well you're certainly not acting like yourself Gabranth. It's nothing to worry about. Like you said, we both have our health. Have fun while you can! Certainly we'll be facing something more dangerous than a little plague, right? Like thread?" Ah, thread. Now that was certainly an adventure all in it's own.
Rita stood and started squishing out her hair, rubbing water out of her eyes. She was still not very happy with her brother. "I hate you R'lie!" she swung at him, connecting with his shoulder. He winced and rubbed it, but was hardly seriously injured by it. "You're . . . you're just a dimglow!" she exclaimed angrily. She splashed water at him angrily, and all he did was laugh at her.
"Don't pick a fight with a dragonrider!" he exclaimed. "That's not a fight you will win!"
"You should be quieter," Gabranth said, mostly to his rider. "Everyone is very upset . . . you should be quieter." he fretted.

Ralia watched the blue rider. It was as the girl said, he was a dimglow. A plague had just tore through the ranks of the Weyr and he had the nerve to say nobody had died? Many had died. She knew of the girl's dragon's fate. The blue rider should be more careful. Tell yours to kindly keep his mouth shut on matters he does not fully comprehend. Amenth voiced shortly. She would not tolerate such behaviour. The boy seemed completely uncaring of anyone's feelings. You both may have your health buy mine and one of her bonded were both hit by the plague and I do not appreciate his behaviour. Ralia walked to Amenth and scratched the queen's eyeridge. There is no need to make yourself fret dearest. There is every need. He does not think before he speaks. It is distressing others who have lost those they love. The pair glanced in the direction of Minno and Ralia sighed. To have lost a dragon so young... She had never met Minno, nor her dragon but she could only imagine the grief she must feel. Those few minutes she'd thought she'd lost Amenth had been torture, but to know it was reality must be heartbreaking.

R'lie felt his dragon mentally flinch. "You are making everyone very angry R'lie . . ." he fretted. "Please think more. I know you mean it only to get Rita to 'get a hobby' but . . . " his thoughts trailed off with his distress, his eyes whirling faster and faster. "Think a little more or else others will call you more than a dimglow. . ."
R'lie frowned. "Everyone is so gloomy. I know it is hard but shouldn't they at least try to move on? I doubt that anyone wants us to act like it's the end of the world. My friend, the past is the past. It is what happens." He frowned more as he put his warm palm against his dragon's hide. Fishermen went out to sea and died all the time. People were killed by thread. It was a fact of life. It was always hard but everyone really had to stop fretting.
"If anyone asks," he said. "I am trying to help, I swear." He sighed wearily, pressing his back against Gabranth's side. Now what could he do? Maybe he should be a little more careful about mentioning the plague. The best way to chase away sadness was with happiness right? Well, he would just have to bring a little bit of light to this horrible dark Weyr. He didn't know how he was going to do that tastefully, but he would certainly find a way.
"Hey Rita!" he called. "If you're done sulking come play with us. You should go with the flow a little more and you are upsetting Gabranth. Isn't she?"
"Rita is not upsetting me, you are." Gabranth replied.
